ESP-GROUP-8

The document outlines a running dictation game for language learning, where students work in teams to memorize and write down words. It also discusses the importance of needs analysis in designing effective English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, focusing on learners' target situations, necessities, and personal wants. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for engaging and practical learning materials to enhance student motivation and success.

It’s game time!

Running dictation
Mechanics:
1. The teacher divides the class into two groups, each consisting of seven (7) members.
2. The teacher will prepare six words for the game.
3. One (1) representative from each group will stand at the front of the class with a pen
and paper.
4. The remaining group members will form a line, from tallest to shortest.
5. Each member will be given a word pasted in the wall..
6. The member will run to the wall, memorize the word, and then run back to their
representative.
7. The representative will write down the word they are told by their team member.
8. The group that correctly writes down all the words first, wins.
Needs Analysis &
Analysing Learning Needs
Presented By: Bantolinao, Bautista, Colonia, Egot, Paquit
Lesson Objective:
At the end of this lesson, 85% of the students
must have:

defined what is target situation and learning

needs;

understood the various factors influencing

learners’ needs; and

untilized needs analysis techniques to

design or modify lesson that aligns with the
learners’ needs.
'What knowledge and abilities will
the learners require in order to be
able to perform to the required
degree of competence in the
target situation?'.
Lacks
The areas where the learner's current language
skills fall short of the required "necessities".

Necessities

What the learner absolutely needs to know or be

able to do to perform well in the target situation.

Wants

"Wants" are the learners' personal aspirations or desires.

Question:

How are we going to get from

our starting point to the
destination?
Learning Needs
refers to the specific knowledge, skills, and
language abilities that a learner requires to
effectively perform in their target situation

Target situation needs:

This involves identifying what learners
need to know and be able to do in specific
real-life situations.
What is needs analysis?
What the analysis cannot do, however, is show how
the expert communicator learnt the language items,
skills and strategies that he or she uses (Smith,
1984).
Analysing what people do tells you little, if anything,
about how they learnt to do it. Yet, the whole ESP
process is concerned not with knowing or doing, but
with learning.
Example: Choosing Texts
for ESP
Selecting the right learning materials is
essential.

Students may lack the motivation to

engage with difficult materials.

Use interesting or humorous texts to

increase engagement.
The Box Kite Project (Herbolich, 1979)
Engineering students built a box kite
and wrote a manual.

Specific Reason for Choosing this:

Relatively new to the students
Related to the field of Engineering
A device which allowed the attainment of
new lexis
A device which actually would operate
Enjoyable to construct and test
ESP should balance real-world
skills with engaging learning.

Learning should be practical,

manageable, and motivating.

ESP learners are not machines —

they need engaging, interactive
tasks.
What does it mean?
when making a course design, we must not... instead, we must...

needs
To analyse learning needs, we
can use a similar checklist to that
used for target situation analysis
A framework for analysing learning needs

Why are the learners taking the course ?

- compulsory or optional;
- apparent need or not;
- Are status, money, promotion involved ?
- What do learners think they will achieve ?
- What is their attitude towards the ESP course ? Do
they want to improve their English or do they resent
the time they have to spend on it?
How do the learners learn ?

- What is their learning background ?

- What is their concept of teaching and
learning ?
- What methodology will appeal to them ?
- What sort of techniques are likely to
bore/alienate them ?
What resources are available ?

- number and professional competence of

teachers;
- attitude of teachers to ESP;
- teachers' knowledge of and attitude to the
subject content;
- materials;
- aids;
- opportunities for out-of-class activities
Who are the learners ?
- age/sex/nationality;
- What do they know already about English ?
- What subject knowledge do they have ?
- What are their interests ?
- What is their socio-cultural background ?
- What teaching styles are they used to ?
- What is their attitude to English or to the
cultures of the Englishspeaking world ?
Where will the ESP course take place ?
- are the surroundings pleasant, dull,
noisy, cold etc ?

When will the ESP course take place ?

- time of day;
- every day/once a week;
- full-time/part-time;
- concurrent with need or pre-need
