SECTION D: COMPREHENSION (13 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow:
There are a lot of things around us that we don't know. We see the sun in the
morning and the moon at night. But do we know other things up there in the sky?
In this story, you will learn something about the planets, the Moon and the Sun.

The sun is believed to move from the east and set in the west. Many people think
the sun moves. The fact is, the earth is the one which moves around the sun in 24
hours. The sun is like light of a torch on the ball. The part that moves away from
the torch becomes dark and the one under the light from the torch receives light.
This is how we get day and night.

The sun is surrounded by nine main planets and satellites. These planets are
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Pluto, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. When
we see the Sun and the Moon from the earth, they look like they are the same
size. However, the Sun is about 400 times bigger in diameter than the Moon and
almost 400 times further away from the earth.

We sometimes think the moon produces light at night. This is not true. The Moon
just reflects light from the Sun. The shape of the moon is not regular like that of
the sun (It keeps changing). This is affected by the position of the Moon from the
Sun. For that reason, we see half-moon, gibbous (more than half but not fully
round) moon and full moon.

Sometimes the Sun and the Moon are in the same position so that the Moon sends
a shadow on the earth and we say the Sun and the Moon are fighting. This in
social studies is called eclipse.
We cannot see planets with our own eyes because of their distance from the earth
and some are small. We need a machine called a telescope. A telescope is a
machine which brings far away things near to us. In 1609, the Italian scientist,
Galileo, built a telescope that allowed him to see the sun and the moons of Jupiter
and we still use it today.
