Hi, welcome to our MOOC titled
Enhancing Your Health: The Role of Physical Therapy and Exercise.
We are thrilled that you've decided to join us, and we've designed this course just for you. My name is Dr. Dina Brooks, and I am a Physiotherapist. I'm also Professor at the University of Toronto. I'm specifically interested in rehabilitation and exercise in individuals with chronic lung disease and with chronic cardiovascular disease such as heart disease and stroke. The best part of my job is teaching students to become Physiotherapist. Hi, my name is Dr. Brenda Marie. I'm a Physical Therapist and Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, where I lead the clinical education component of the curriculum. My research interests are in the area of education, primarily on learner assessment, curriculum development, and faculty development. I love being a Physical Therapist because it's giving me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. Hi, my name is Dr. Euson Young, and I'm a Physical Therapist in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto. What I love about my job is the range of opportunities I've been afforded. I've been a Clinician for many years helping people with orthopedic issues return to their every day activities. I also really enjoy being involved in teaching students in their professional master's program at the University of Toronto, and particularly with teaching them hands-on and thinking skills in the field of orthopedics. With science changing so quickly around us, it's hard to keep the facts straight about how to stay healthy. In fact, more and more people are talking about and concerned about their health these days, especially when it comes to exercise. So we've created this course to help you understand how physical therapy and exercise can play a big role in managing your health. In this course, we have six interactive self-guided modules for you to work through that contain recorded to speakers, videos, readings, and activities for you to complete. So, take some time to listen to the recordings carefully and to complete each reading and activity. Because this course focuses on helping you participate in exercise, we really want you to reflect on your own experiences with exercise or think of someone you know who might have one of the conditions or diseases that we'll be talking about. Each module is set up in the same way. First, it's going to be a little video by one of us to coach you through the module. Then, there's a prerecorded lecture. There will be some additional learning materials for you to review. Then, at the end of each module, you'll have a chance to think back on what you've read, seen, and heard, and apply to your own situation. If you want to get a certificate for this course, you'll have to complete the multiple choice questions at the end and score at least 60 percent for every module. You'll also have to do several small projects and assignments throughout that will contribute to your capstone projects to enable you to get the certificate. It's great having you in this course. We hope you really enjoy learning about physical therapy and exercise. Hi, my name is Euson and I'll be your coach for the first module, why physical activity and exercise are important. Did you know that everyone can participate in exercise no matter your physical capabilities? Did you know that exercise is good for your health? In this module, we'll guide you through some of the facts about why exercise is good for us and why we all benefit from doing regular exercises. Agnes McCloskey, a physiotherapist with expertise in exercise and sport will tell you more about it in her video. She will also tell you about how a physiotherapist or physical therapist can help you exercise safely and effectively. But before you meet Agnes, we'll ask you first to complete a scavenger hunt inside some well-known exercise guidelines and to think about your own exercise habits. After you listen to Agnes, we will ask you to set a plan to improve your exercise habits over the next several weeks. Finally, at the end of this module, we'll quiz your knowledge about what you know about exercise and the role of physiotherapy in helping you exercise safely and effectively. So, make sure you pay attention when listening to Agnes. I'll let you get started now. Enjoy the module.
