THE EAGLES SLED PERSPECTIVE By: Andy Gao

What is Klondike Derby? Its an annual event that tests the knowledge of scouts. This includes basic first aid, tying knots and lashings, orienteering, fire building, cooking and demonstration of LNT Skills. This year, Troop 155s three sleds were led by Jake Simon, Chris Peckyno, and I. For those who camped at Klondike, the trip began at Lass Lodge in Quail Hill Scout Reservation. After the whole troop grouped together, we marched down to our sleeping quarter: a cabin. Because of earlier arrangements, Troop 155 was able to sleep in a cabin. As soon as we arrived, we dropped our packs and went to Mr. Placeks truck to help set the troop gear. Not long after, we were all inside the cabin with a cozy fire starting upcourtesy of Hunter Haber and Konnor Fahy. With the warm fire and the relaxed atmosphere, it was no surprise that everyone was soon asleep. WAKE UP!!!!!! yelled Jake on the top of his lungs. Immediately, my body jilted up and was awake in an instant. Today was the day of the Klondike. A day the troop have been preparing for nearly a month. At around 8:30, the campers met up with the Klondike-Only scouts, and we separated into our three sleds. In three lines, we hiked to Lawrence Lodge, the location of the Prochnows trailer, in order to retrieve our Klondike Sled. Next, we headed back towards Lass Lodge to Check-In. After an hour or so, Troop 155 had officially begun Klondike Derby. My sled was the Eagles and included James Pezzullo, Brandon Capone, Charles Placek, Connor Crafton-Tempel, Brett Abrahamsen, Harry Biddle, and Jeremy Ehling. As sled leader, I looked at our schedule and our first station was first aid. Along the trail to our destination, we screamed our patrol yell. WHO ARE WE? EAGLES!!!WHO ARE WE? EAGLES!!!SQUAWKKKK!! When we reached the mayor(the director) of the town(the station), he gave us a scenario, and we quickly went to work. Although we had some struggles, I thought that my sled pretty well considering it was our first station. The next town that we were headed for was the lashing station. I took out my map and began looking for where to go. Thinking it was right behind the first aid station, our sled headed that direction. Soon, we realized that we were entering the Webelows mock Klondike Derby. After rechecking the map, we began heading for the right direction. Due to wasted time, our sled began to pick up our pace. Eventually we were so fast, we accidentally crashed into a tree. At the lashing station, we were given two tests. First, we were to tie a timber hitch and drag a log back and forth. Second, we had to build a designated signal device using a diagonal lashing, a square lashing, and a round lashing. With the help of some skilled lashers in our sled were able to plow through this station. Following this station, we headed for the cooking/fire building town. As soon as we entered the station, we began building a fire. I sent everyone but the fire builder to retrieve wood. Before you knew it, we had a fire with a pot above it to cook our lunch: chicken noodle soup. While the soup was cooking, Jeremy and Connor went out into the woods to dig a sump, while the rest of the Eagle sled continued to collect wood. In fact, we collected and used so much wood, that the staves used to hold up the soup pot

stared to burn. Immediately, using our water bucket, we stopped the bonfire. Afterwards, we sipped our warmed chicken noodle soup. Even though some points were deducted for the fire, the sled learned from this experience to not put too much wood into the fire. After the cooking station, we went to teambuilding and then orienteering. In teambuilding, we had to do three activities. One: A cooperative written test about scouting. Two: Plank walk, a teambuilding game. Three: While blindfolded, use a stick to lift up a bucket of ice. This station was one of our best stations point wise. As soon as we finished orienteering, we marched into orienteering chanting our cheer. At Orienteering, we had to find distance using a compass, and to successfully finish an orienteering course. Finally, we reached our last station, LNT. At LNT, we were quizzed on the seven principles on LNT, and were told to place a bear bag, a sump, and a tent at the proper distance, and location. With our last spurt of energy, we completed the tasks and headed back to the check-in to finish. Tired, and exhausted, all of the Klondike campers slept soundly on the evening of Klondike.
