This paper consists of FIVE questions. Attemptquestion ONE (Compulsory) and any other TWO questions.

Question ONE
a) Show your understanding of the following terms as used in the computer (8 marks)
i) Software
ii)Computer
iii) Extranet
iv) Internet
b) “Computers are very important in an Organization”. Justify this statement by giving four functions of a computer
facility within an organization (4 marks)
c) Computerizing business operations may require the users of the computers to be trained. State clearly four reasons
for training employees on how to use computers. (4 marks)
d) Highlight five reasons why computers system require secondary storage. (5 marks)
e) By citing an example in each case, classify computers based on the type of data which they can manipulate or
according to technology. (9 marks)

Question TWO
a) Describe five common security threats faced by an organization’s computer – based Information system.
(10 marks)
b) Explain five techniques that accompany can employ in reducing the threats in (a) above. (10 marks)

a) By citing an example in each case, differentiate between the following terms as used in computer
i) Primary memory and Auxiliary memory (4 marks)
ii) Utilities softwares and Operating system (4 marks)

b) Highlight two advantages and two disadvantages of a Cache memory. (4 marks)
c) Computers have various applications in the real life situation. Highlight four application areas in which computers are
being used at our homes. (4 marks)

Question FOUR
a) Buying a computer from the market requires a careful consideration. Explain any three specifications that one should
considered when sourcing for a computer. (6 marks)
b) Highlight four sources of computer viruses. (4 marks)
c) Using a well labeled diagram, identify the hardware components in a modern computer system and their roles in
processing information. (10 marks)

Question FIVE
a) In a computer system both input devices and output devices are used as a means to carrying out computational
processes. Define the term input devices and output devices; and state any two devices for each category
(8 marks)
b) Using a suitable example and the following methods, explain how a negative number can be represented in a
computer system.
i) 1’s Complement Method (3 marks)
ii) 2’s Complement Method (3 marks)
c) Explain three functions of an Operating System in a Computer (6 marks)
