IN THE TEACHING DEPARTMENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KERALA

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Prospectus Overview

This prospectus outlines the admission process for Postgraduate (PG) Degree Programmes in the
Teaching Departments of the University of Kerala for the Academic year 2025-26. It provides
essential information and Regulations governing PG admissions. The prospectus issued by the
University during the previous years for PG Admissions in the Teaching Departments is not
valid for the Academic Year 2025-26.

1.2 About the University

The University of Kerala, one of India's first 16 Universities, was established in 1937 as the
University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore (now the southern part of
Kerala). In 1957, following the formation of the unified state of Kerala, the University of
Travancore was renamed the University of Kerala. The institution is presently governed by the
Kerala University Act of 1974.

Governance and Administration

The Vice-Chancellor, appointed by the Governor of Kerala, is the chief executive officer of the
University. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor assists the Vice-Chancellor. The key decision-making
bodies include:

 The Senate – The supreme authority on general policy matters, comprising 117 members
representing diverse sectors.
 The Academic Council – The principal academic body responsible for formulating
Regulations, Academic Policies, and Curriculum Structures.
 The Syndicate – The chief executive body with 25 members, overseeing the University's
administration and operations.

Academic and Research Structure

The University of Kerala encompasses a robust academic framework with:

 43 Departments of Teaching and Research, organized under 11 Schools, predominantly


located at the Karyavattom campus.
 A network of affiliated colleges across Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta,
and Alappuzha Districts.
 A student body exceeding 2000 full-time students (including research scholars) with a
significant presence of international students in the University Departments.
 196 affiliated colleges with an enrollment of over 130,000 students.
 University Institutes of Technology (UITs) and University Colleges of Teacher Education
(UTECs) offering UG and selected PG Programmes.
 Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), catering to approximately 30,000
students nationwide.

Academic Framework

The University follows a three-tier academic system:

1. Board of Studies – Governs subject-wise syllabus design and academic actions.


2. Faculties (16 in total) – Groups of related disciplines.
3. Academic Council – The apex academic body governing curriculum and Academic
Regulations.

Postgraduate Programmes operate under the Choice-Based Credit and Semester System
(CBCSS), with semesters running from August-January and February-July. Most PG
Programmes span two years (four semesters), culminating in a thesis/project in the final
semester.

1.4 Admission Process

 Admission to the Departmental Post-Graduate Programmes is based on the marks


obtained in the Entrance Examination conducted by the University of Kerala.

1.5 MBA Admissions

 Admission to the MBA Programmes is not covered under this Prospectus and is governed
by a separate admission process.

1.6 Important Information

 All candidates applying for PG Programmes, regardless of category, must register online.
 After completing the online registration, candidates must retain a printout of the
application. Hard copies should not be sent to the University. However, the hard copy
along with supporting documents should be kept by the candidate and submitted at the
time of Admission to the respective Department.
 Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OEC/SEBC are not eligible for EWS reservation. Only
candidates belonging to Forward Communities, who are Economically Backward, are
eligible for EWS reservations. Such candidates must produce an EWS Certificate from
the Village Officer/Revenue Authority concerned.
 No memos will be sent by post for defective applications. However, an edit option will be
available for a stipulated period. No corrections will be permitted after this period.
 Appearing for the Entrance Examination, inclusion in the Rank List, or seat allotment
does not guarantee admission unless all eligibility criteria outlined in the Prospectus are
met.
 The Entrance Examination Centres in Kerala are: Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam,
Munnar, and Kozhikode.
 Two optional centres outside Kerala—Chennai and Delhi—will be available subject to
sufficient applicants. The Vice-Chairman, CSS, has the authority to cancel any centre
with fewer than 100 applicants.

2. DEPARTMENTS, PROGRAMMES AND SEATS

2.1 Details of Programmes and Duration

The Programme leads to a Master’s Degree in the relevant subject. The Programme of study
shall be by regular attendance for the requisite number of lectures, practical training, and other
means.

The list of University Departments and the Programmes to which admissions are to be made,
along with the total approved number of seats in each Department, are given in Annexure – I of
the Prospectus.

2.2 Categorization of Seats

Seats available in University Departments are mainly classified as Open Merit Seats, Community
Merit Seats and seats reserved for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category.

 Open Merit Seats: The seats that are to be filled by the University purely on merit
basis, irrespective of any reservation for the Departments.

 Community Merit Seats: The seats in the Departments of the University that are
earmarked for SC/ST/SEBC category.
 EWS: The seats in the Departments of the University that are earmarked for
Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) belonging to Forward Communities.

3. RESERVATION OF SEATS

3.1 Types of Reservations

Seats will be reserved for the following categories in the University Departments for various PG
Programmes:

 Mandatory Reservation
 Special Reservation

3.1.1 Mandatory Reservation

The seats for each Programme in the University Departments will be distributed as per G.O (MS)
No.107/08/H.Edn. dated 30.08.08 and U.O AcB/I/Admns BC/2008 dated 20.09.2008. To ensure
the eligible percentage of reservation for all communities, the rotation of category is done with
seat matrix every year. After allotting seats as per seat matrix, the remaining fraction
(positive/negative) of each year will be carried over to the next year.

Reservation for communities and the percentage shall be governed by the government
orders issued to date and are applicable only to Keralites.

Lists of eligible communities for reservation are given in Annexures IV, V, VI and VII

*Candidates who enjoy communal reservation such as SEBC, SC/ST and OEC are not eligible
for EWS reservations. Only candidates belonging to Forward Communities, who are
Economically Backward, are eligible for EWS reservations. Such candidates must produce EWS
Certificate from the Village Officer/Revenue Authority concerned.

3.1.2 Special Reservation

Supernumerary seats shall be available for each Postgraduate (PG) Programme under the
following categories:

1. Non-Keralite Candidates:
o One seat shall be allotted to a candidate from the rank list who is not a native of
Kerala.
2. Foreign Candidates:
o There shall be supernumerary seats for eligible foreign candidates, subject to the
relevant Regulations governing foreign students' admissions.
3. Transgender Students:
o Additional seats shall be created exclusively for transgender students in
accordance with government norms (G.O. (Ms) No. 153/2018 HEdn dated
03.07.2018).
o Candidates seeking admission under this category must submit a Transgender
Identity Card issued by the State Government along with the relevant documents
at the time of submitting the hard copy of the online application form.
4. Arts Quota:
o Candidates who have been awarded the titles of ‘Kalathilakam’ or
‘Kalaprathibha’ in University Youth Festivals during their Bachelor's Programme
shall be eligible for admission to a Programme of their choice, provided they meet
the eligibility criteria.
5. Sponsored Candidates:
o One seat shall be allotted to a sponsored candidate from Government
Departments, Research & Development (R&D) Institutions, or Industries,
provided the candidate has a minimum of two years of work experience.
6. Differently Abled Persons (PWD):
o One seat shall be reserved for candidates with a disability of 40% or above when
the sanctioned intake for the Programme is below 25.
o Two seats shall be reserved when the sanctioned intake is 25 or above.
o For subjects in Science and Technology streams, eligibility shall be determined by
the CSS Academic Committee (CSSAC) based on the recommendations of the
respective Department Council.

As per Clause 2 (t), Chapter I of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, a "Person with
Disability" refers to an individual suffering from a disability of not less than 40%, as certified by
a Medical Authority constituted for this purpose. Candidates with a minimum of 40% disability
are eligible to apply under this quota.

Eligibility and Documentation:

 Candidates seeking admission under the PWD category must submit a Certificate of
Disability issued by the District Medical Board or a higher competent authority.
 The certificate must specify the degree and percentage of disability and should be issued
not earlier than 12 months prior to the admission date.

Admission Process:

 Candidates under the Differently Abled Persons (PWD) category must specify their status
during online registration.
 Selection under this category shall be strictly based on the rank in the Entrance
Examination, and not on the degree of disability.
 No seat reservation is available for blind candidates in Science subjects.
 Blind candidates who require the assistance of a scribe for the Entrance Examination
must obtain prior permission from the Controller of Examinations, University of Kerala.

7. Sports Quota:
o One seat shall be given for sports persons over and above the sanctioned strength
in each Post Graduate Degree Programme. Admission to such seats shall be made
as per the procedure for admission under the sports quota. If the required number
of sports persons is not available, the seats should be kept vacant and shall not be
filled by other candidates.

Norms for Admission under Sports Quota

The criteria for verification and ranking of sports achievement certificates are based on the
specified priority (See Annexure II).

General Guidelines for Admission under Sports Quota

i. Candidates who seek admission under the sports quota should apply online within the
prescribed time.
ii. The achievement certificate received before the closure of registration of PG Programmes
will only be considered for ranking in sports quota admissions.
iii. For securing admission to PG Programmes under the Sports Quota, the performance of
the candidate during the preceding three years/Degree Level shall only be considered.

iv. For filling up the seats reserved under the Sports Quota, a hierarchy of preference shall be
given as per the norms/guidelines formulated by the University in addition to satisfying
his/her academic eligibility.
v. When the candidates fulfil the minimum academic eligibility, academic merit shall not be
preferred over sports merit in sports quota reservation seats, except in the case of a tie in
sports merit.
vi. The candidates who wish to apply under the sports quota should opt for “Sports – Yes”
during online registration. They need to select the level of achievement and event in the
online application.
vii. The University will conduct a centralized verification of the application and authenticity
of Sports Certificates and a Provisional Rank list will be published after the verification.
viii. The admission will be determined by the Head of the Department (HoD) based on this
Rank list and subject to the verification of Original Certificates. The date of admission
will be communicated to candidates via a Memo.
ix. The Original Certificate/s from the competent authority/authorities (Secretary, Organizer,
etc., as per the Circular Letter No. Ad.D1.3.1276/74 dated 23.01.1979) must be produced
by the candidate to prove his/her claim.
x. If any discrepancy is detected during the verification of original certificates, the candidate
will not be eligible for admission under the sports quota.

Tie-Breaking Criteria for Sports Merit

In the event of a tie in sports merit, the following criteria will be considered to resolve the tie, in
the order of priority outlined below:

1. A weightage of marks may be given to candidates who have achievements in the


following games selected by the University for the purpose of tie-breaking only (Major
Games):
o Foot Ball
o Cricket
o Basket Ball
o Volley Ball
o Badminton
o Kabaddi
o Athletics
o Aquatics
2. Year of achievement (Preference shall be given to achievements closer to the year of
application).
3. Academic merit.

The List of sports disciplines considered for PG admissions is mentioned in Annexure III.

The seats reserved under Differently Abled, Transgender, and Sports Quota are created
over and above the sanctioned strength. In the absence of candidates who are eligible for
these reservations, such seats will remain unfilled.

8. Fishermen’s Children:

One supernumerary seat is reserved for the children of fishermen in the M.Sc.
Programmes Aquatic Biology & Fisheries and Applied Aquaculture.

Candidates claiming reservation under Clause 3.1.2 (Non-Keralite candidates,


Transgender students, Arts Quota, Sponsored Candidates, Differently Abled
Persons (PWD), Sports Quota, and Fishermen’s Children) should submit a separate
application in hard copy, along with a printout of the online application form and
relevant documents, to the Deputy Registrar, Credit and Semester System,
University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Pin - 695581, on or before the commencement of
the Entrance Examination. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in
disqualification from consideration under these categories.

4. CLAIMS FOR MANDATORY RESERVATION AND CERTIFICATES


TO BE PRODUCED

Claims for mandatory reservations must be made by a candidate at the time of submission of the
online application. Candidates should also mention the item of reservation claimed in the
relevant fields in the online application. Candidates should also satisfy the eligibility conditions
as per Clause 5 of the Prospectus. The claims for mandatory reservation once made in the
application cannot be altered by the candidate under any circumstances.

4.1 Open Merit Seats

The seats under the Open Merit category will be filled purely on a merit basis irrespective of the
Category/Community to which the candidates belong.

4.2 Community Reservation

4.2.1 Claim for Communal Reservation under ‘Socially and Educationally


Backward Classes’ (SEBC)

Reservation of seats for the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes will be in accordance
with the provisions contained in G.O. (P) 208/66/Edn. Dated 2.5.1966, as amended from time to
time.

Candidates belonging to Ezhava, Muslim, Other Backward Hindus, Latin Catholic/SIUC, and
Other Backward Christian communities, claiming reservation under the SEBC Quota, should
invariably obtain a Non-Creamy Layer Certificate from the Village Officer/Tahsildar and should
submit it at the time of admission. (U.O.No.Ad.A.5.3.57643 (a)/2017 dated 06.10.2017). Only
the claims of candidates belonging to those communities that are included in the official list of
communities will be considered. (U.O.No.Ac.BI/UG Admns. BC/2011, dated 11.01.2012).

4.2.2 Claim for Reservation under Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Quota

a. Candidates seeking reservation under the SC/ST category must obtain a valid
Caste/Community Certificate from the Village Officer/Tahsildar. Submission of any
fraudulent certificate to claim SC/ST reservation will result in stringent legal actions as
per prevailing Regulations.
b. If sufficient candidates are not available to fill the seats reserved for SC/ST candidates,
the same will be notified in the media three times (on three different dates), and separate
allotments for vacant SC/ST seats will be made by the University. If seats remain
unfilled, SC seats will be converted to ST seats and vice versa. However, if SC/ST seats
are still vacant even after this, such seats will be filled by candidates belonging to Other
Eligible Communities (OEC) included in Annexure VI of the Prospectus and, in their
absence, by candidates from the SEBC category included in Annexure VII from the
existing rank list. If vacancies persist, the seats will be allotted under the Open Merit
quota.
c. Claim of OEC candidates against the un-availed seats of SC/ST candidates: Other
Eligible Community (OEC) candidates who claim allotment to the un-availed seats, if
any, under the SC/ST quota should furnish Community and Income certificates obtained
from the Village Officer/Tahsildar concerned. Those OEC candidates whose annual
family income is up to Rs. 6 lakhs (Rupees Six lakhs only) alone are eligible for such
seats. OEC seats will be filled as per rules laid by the Government.
d. Scheduled caste converts do not come under the SC/ST category. They will be considered
only under the OEC category.
e. All the above provisions are general in nature, and reservations will be subject to the
rules of the University in force at the time of admission. Communal and other
reservations will be granted only upon satisfactory verification of the required original
certificates at the time of admission. These reservations will be governed by the
prevailing University Regulations, subject to amendments from time to time.

4.2.3 Claim for Fee Concession to OEC Candidates

Candidates belonging to Other Eligible Communities are exempted from payment of fees at the
time of admission irrespective of annual family income as per G.O (MS) No. 36/07/SCSTDD,

dated: 03.07.2007. They should provide the Community Certificate from the Village
Officer/Tahsildar at the time of admission.

5. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

5.1 Nativity

Candidates must be Indian citizens. For foreign candidates, relevant Regulations apply.

5.2 Indulgence in Ragging as Disqualification

Applicants found guilty of ragging in the past or during their academic tenure will be denied
admission or expelled. An undertaking as per the anti-ragging verdict by the Hon’ble Supreme
Court of India (Annexure VIII) must be submitted at the time of admission.

5.3 Academic Eligibility and Relaxation in Grade Points/Marks in the Qualifying


Examination:

i. For PG Programmes Candidates must have completed a 10+2+3 scheme and hold a
Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Kerala or an equivalent recognized degree
with:

 3.5 or above in a 7-point scale, or
 5 or above in a 10-point scale, or
 50% or above in Bachelor’s Degrees awarding marks.

5.4 Special Conditions for Eligibility

Candidates with Degrees from institution outside the University of Kerala, those with Double or
Triple main subjects or those with Vocational/Specialized Degrees must provide an Equivalency
and Eligibility Certificate.

5.5 Choice of Optional Subjects

The optional subject for the PG Programme should be the same as the Core Course chosen for
Graduation. If different, eligibility will be determined as per University Regulations.

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)

Admission to various MBA Programmes is notified separately and admission is based on


KMAT, CMAT, and CAT.

Note: In the case of the annual scheme, the following procedure will be adopted: For PG
Programmes in Languages/Arts/Humanities, in place of the requirement of 4 courses, Part II in
the concerned language shall be considered.

7. RANK LIST

The rank list for admission shall be prepared based on the performance in the Entrance
Examination. For sponsored candidates, ranking shall be based on 80% weightage for
CGPA/aggregate marks at the bachelor level, 10% for work experience (1% per year), and 10%
for an interview conducted by the Department Council.

8. RESOLVING OF TIE

In the case of more than one candidate obtaining equal marks in the Entrance Examinations, the
candidate who has scored higher overall CGPA/marks in the qualifying examination in the case
of Arts, Social Sciences, and Science will be placed higher in ranking. If the tie persists, the
candidate who has scored higher CGPA/marks in the core subject in the case of Arts, Social
Sciences, and Sciences will be placed higher in ranking.

If the tie still persists, the candidate who has scored higher CGPA/marks in complementary
subjects will be placed higher in ranking. Even after this exercise, if the tie persists, the candidate
who has scored higher CGPA/marks in languages will be placed higher in ranking.

9. HOW TO APPLY

9.1 General Instructions

(a) Any candidate who wishes to join a PG Degree Programme in the University Departments
should compulsorily register online at http://admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in. A candidate will
have the facility to apply for a maximum of 5 Programmes through a single registration.
Submission of Multiple applications will not be entertained. Upon successful completion of the
online registration, the candidate should take a printout of the same.

(b) The site is optimized for the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.
(c) Candidates are advised to enable “JavaScript” before proceeding with the registration.
(d) Read the instructions carefully before proceeding with the registration.

(e) Do not press the “Back” button during the registration process.

9.2 Online Registration Fee

9.3 Submission of Application

The online application process consists of the following mandatory steps:

1. Register on the website by providing basic information.


2. Login to the candidate’s page using the application number and password (date of birth
will be the default password).
3. Enter Personal Details and details of opted Programmes for Entrance Examinations.
4. Pay the Registration Fee online.
5. Upload Photo and Signature in the prescribed format.
6. Download the Application Form from the candidate’s profile.
7. Download the Admit Card before the date of the Entrance Examination.

10. ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

10.1 Entrance Examination as a Mandatory Requirement

There shall be an Entrance Examination for admission to each PG Programme. No candidate


shall be admitted to a PG Programme without taking the Entrance Examination, except for
SC/ST candidates admitted to vacant seats, foreign candidates and sponsored candidates.

10.2 Nature of Entrance Examination

 The Entrance Examination shall consist of 100 multiple choice questions for 100 marks,
covering subject knowledge at the qualifying examination level and/or logical and
numerical reasoning.
 The duration of the exam will be a maximum of 2 hours.

 There shall be a deduction of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the Entrance
Examination.
 Candidates must secure a score greater than zero in the Entrance Examination conducted
by the University of Kerala to be included in the Rank List.

10.3 Conduct of Entrance Examinations

 The Department Council shall set model question papers for Entrance Examinations, and
the Controller of Examinations shall arrange for setting the final Question Papers.
 The Office of the CSS shall conduct the Entrance Examinations.
 No re-examination shall be provided to absentees under any circumstances.

10.4 Online Admit Cards

(a)The Admit Card for the Entrance Examination can be downloaded from
http://admissions.keralauniversity.ac.in. Candidates must enter their Application Number and
Password to download the admit card.
(b) Admit cards will not be sent by post from the University.
(c) The examination venue and timetable will be provided in the admit card.

10.5 Revaluation

There shall be no revaluation of Entrance Examination answer scripts.

11. ADMISSION PROCEDURE


11.1 Reporting at the University Department

Candidates must report for admission before the Head of the Department concerned only when
the University announces the admission schedule. Candidates should report with the following
original documents:

1. Print out of completed online application.


2. Admission Memo.
3. Certificate to prove date of birth.
4. Transfer Certificate (TC) and Conduct Certificate.
5. Marklists of the Degree examination and Provisional/Degree Certificate.
6. Eligibility Certificate (for candidates who have completed qualifying exams from other
Universities).
7. Migration Certificate (for candidates from other Universities).
8. Caste/Community Certificate for candidates under SC/ST category.
9. Non Creamy Layer Certificate in the case of SEBC candidates.

Candidates failing to report on time will forfeit their admission claim.

11.2 Verification of Documents

The Head of the Department shall be responsible for verifying the original documents and
ensuring the correctness of the records produced by the candidate at the time of admission. The
Head of the Department has the right to deny admission if any discrepancies are found between
the original documents and the online data that influenced the ranking process.

11.3 Failure to Report for Admission

Candidates who fail to report for admission on the prescribed date and time will forfeit their
claim to admission. The University of Kerala will not entertain any requests for changes to the
admission schedule once the dates are announced.

11.4 Fee to be paid at the Time of Admission

Candidates must remit the required fee at the time of admission. The details of the fee structure
will be provided in the admission memo.

12. FEE CONCESSIONS AND OTHER FINANCIAL PROVISIONS

12.1 Fee for New Courses

The fee structure for newly introduced courses will be informed at the time of admission.

12.2 Fee Exemptions for SC/ST Candidates

Candidates belonging to SC/ST communities allotted against merit seats or reserved seats are
exempted from payment of fees at the time of admission.

12.3 Fee Concession for OEC Candidates

Candidates belonging to Other Eligible Communities (OEC) are exempted from payment of fees
at the time of admission to Post Graduate Programmes, irrespective of annual family income, as
per G.O. (MS) No. 36/07/SCSTDD, dated: 03.07.2007. They must provide a Community
Certificate from the Village Officer/Revenue Authority.

12.4 Caution Deposit

All admitted candidates (including candidates from SC/ST/OEC categories) will be required to
pay the Caution Deposit as per the existing rules.

12.5 Student Care Fund

All admitted candidates (including candidates from SC/ST/OEC categories) should remit a
premium of Rs. 200/- for the Student Care Fund (a one-time payment for two years) at the time
of admission.

13. OTHER ITEMS

13.1 Admission Regulations

The entire admission process for PG Degree Programmes for the academic year 2025-26 will be
conducted by the University of Kerala in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations for
PG Programmes in the Teaching Departments of the University of Kerala (2020).

13.2 Jurisdiction of Disputes

All disputes related to the allotment and admission process shall fall under the jurisdiction of the
Hon'ble High Court of Kerala.

13.3 Final Authority on Admission Matters

Any matters not specifically covered in this Prospectus will be decided by the University of
Kerala, and the decision of the University shall be final.
