2. A glass cylinder 5 cm internal diameter and with a screen at the bottom was used as a
falling head permeameter. The thickness of the sample was 10 cm. With the water level in
the tube at the start of the test as 50 cm above the tail water, it dropped by 10 cm in one
minute, the tail water level remaining unchanged. Calculate the value of k (cm/s) for the
sample
3. A falling head permeability test was carried out on a 15 cm long sample of silty clay. The
diameter of the sample and the stand-pipe were 9.8 cm and 0.75 cm respectively. The
water level in the stand-pipe was observed to fall from 60 cm to 45 cm in 12 minutes.
Determine: the coe@icient of permeability of the soil in m/day, height of water level in the
stand-pipe after another 20 minutes. And time required for the water level to drop to 10 cm.
4. A sand layer of the cross-sectional area shown in Figure has been determined to exist for
a 800-m length of the levee. The hydraulic conductivity of the sand layer is 2.8 m/day.
Determine the quantity of water which flows into the ditch in m3/min.
5. Find the flow rate in m3/sec/m length (at right angles to the cross section shown) through
the permeable soil layer. Given: H = 5 m, H1 = 2.8 m, h = 3.1 m, L = 60 m, a 50 , k = 0.05
cm/sec.
