Platform Description
ECI’s F152 is a fully customizable and very flexible high-bandwidth access
gateway and DSLAM. The F152 can be deployed in the central office where it
can aggregate traffic from other Hi-FOCuS shelves toward the network. It can
also be deployed in the local loop to provide services directly to subscribers. In
either case, subtending and direct-to-subscriber services can be mixed for
maximum deployment flexibility.
ECI’s F152 delivers fully customizable and flexible high bandwidth services on
one shelf. The F152 can be populated with any combination of ADSL2+,
VDSL2, SHDSL, GPLT, or VoIP line cards, and provides Ethernet
aggregation, all with a non-blocking internal architecture to maximize
bandwidth availability. The F152 is based on tested technology that is currently
deployed in the field by First-Tier carriers servicing millions of subscribers.
Deployed in a Central Office (CO), the F152 serves as an infrastructure
component within the network and aggregates traffic from other subtended Hi-
FOCuS shelves towards the network. The F152 can also be deployed in Local
Loop locations for direct-to-subscriber services. In either case, the F152 can
mix subtending and direct-to-subscriber services for maximum deployment
flexibility.
One of the features that significantly increases bandwidth availability is the
multiple NI link aggregation. Multiple Ethernet ports can be aggregated into a
single logical group for high bandwidth applications. Lines can be aggregated
across NI cards (inter-NI) or within the same card (intra-NI). Aggregation also
occurs in the backplane between NIs and line cards, providing both load
sharing and redundancy.
Front View
Fifteen tributary/line cards can be installed in 15 slots. The slots 16 and 17 are
for two NI cards.
The F152 pluggable cards, modules, and fixed units are:
Central Connection Panel (Connecting Panel)
Power module
Cable organizer
Main card compartment with tributary/line cards in slots 1-15
NI cards in slots 16 and 17
Fan Unit
CFU 1 and CFU 2 cards
Hold up capacitors card
Front cover
Connection Panel
The Connection Panel, located at the top of the F152 contains connectors for
power source, external alarms, clock reference, and local craft. It also contains
two Ethernet ports (Ethernet A and Ethernet B) for NI communication, and two
additional Ethernet ports (ETH-8 and ETH-9) for future use.
Alarm Connector
Eight external input alarms and three external output alarms (major, minor and
alarm cutoff) are available in the Connecting Panel 37 D-type male connector.
The external alarms are intended to send status information on external events,
such as cabinet door openings, to the OPS.
Management Interface
The Connecting Panel contains 2 Ethernet ports (A & B) for out-of-band
management.
If two power sources are used, the CFU cards share the power load. If one
power source is missing, the CFU of the other power source assumes the entire
load. If one CFU fails, or is not installed, the other CFU card assumes the entire
load.
Fan Unit
The fan unit contains six fans. The fan module is field replaceable, without
affecting traffic, if the replacement procedure is completed within a few
minutes.
The fans are wired in a pattern to ensure that in case of a hardware failure, no
single slot will lose cooling. In the event of a failure of any one of the fans, the
remaining fans also switch to Turbo mode to maintain cooling power.
The fan card is controlled by the NI cards. Controls include speed, start and
stop. Reports include shelf temperature and fan status.
Air Filter
The F152 has an option for an air filter that prevents dust from entering the
system.
The following flow chart provides an overview of the tasks you need to
perform when installing the F152.
List of Cables
The following is a list of cables needed for installing the system.
Site Requirements
Guidelines for Mounting in a Rack or
Elsewhere
The following are rack-mounting guidelines for the F152:
The F152 is 770 mm (30.3 ins.) height. Ensure that there is enough space
above and below for cable routing and to maintain a sufficient airflow. A
space of at least 100 mm is recommended. However, if circumstances
dictate, the units can be placed closer together.
Make sure that there is a minimum of 50 mm (2 in.) of clearance at the
F152's inlet and exhaust vents.
Maintain at least 760 mm (30 in.) of clearance at the front of the F152 for
easy insertion and removal of cards and maintenance purposes.
To visually inspect:
1. Check for loose parts or any visual damage to the rack, shelf, and auxiliary
equipment.
2. Check the integrity of all the connectors, leads, and cables.
3. Search the shipping boxes for any additional small items that may be
present.
4. Check the contents of the shipping boxes against the packing list attached
to each box. If you detect any damaged or missing parts, notify the project
manager and/or your local ECI Telecom representative.
Shelf Installation
Prior to installing the shelf, the door must be removed.
Mounting Methods
The F152 can be mounted in the following racks:
19 ins. (482 mm)

racks.
Rack Installation
NOTE: Two technicians are recommended to mount the F152
in the rack to properly position and attach the rack:
NOTE: Since air flows into the F152 from the lower front side
exits from the top, the recommended minimum distances
between shelves to allow proper air circulation and cable
bending clearance are:
Top and Bottom — 10 cm clearance between shelves
Right and Left — 0 cm between shelves

must cover the cable distribution, connectors, and sockets.
Power Supply
The power supply is checked using a multimeter.
Board Status
If the power supply is normal, proceed with the following procedures:
1. Turn on the power of the rack that supplies power to the F152. The fan unit
of the F152 starts running. If the fans in the chassis are not running
normally, cut off the power and check the fans.
2. Turn off the power of the rack, and then re-insert the cards into the
backplane.
Powering Off
There are no special procedures for powering down the F152. To power down
the system, turn off the A and B power sources.
In order for the F152 to operate properly and communicate with the OPS, some
default system settings need to be changed. The following describes how to
configure the F152 with basic configuration information such as IP addresses.
More extensive configuration, such as user profiles and system configuration,
is performed with the help of the OPS management system.

Power Connection
The required power range is –40.5 VDC to –75 VDC.
As in other ECI platforms, the F152 receives power from two sources in
redundant mode.
The standard power feed module for the F152 is the High-current Input Filter
dual-source power feed module supported with two Central Filtering Unit
(CFU) card modules. Each CFU card supports both power sources. Hence,
there is redundancy in the power source and in the CFU card.
The High-current Input Filter power input module and the Central Filtering
Unit cards are designed for a maximum of 2500 W.
