Conversation 1:
W: Have you sent out the shipment of computers to the electronics shop yet? The owner just called and
said he needs them within the hour.
M: The truck left ten minutes ago, so it should arrive at the store in the next fifteen minutes. Do you want
me to check to see where the driver is now?
W: That's okay. So long as it has left, it'll be fine. Now could you do me a favor and get those boxes
loaded on to the truck parked over there?
Conversation 2:
Mother: How are you getting to college? It’s already five to nine. You’ve missed the bus. Are you going to walk?
Mother: Oh, Matthew. I need it today. If you want to borrow the car you need to ask me several days before.
Sorry, you’re going to have to walk. It just isn’t convenient today.
Matthew: But I did ask you. We talked about it last week. Don’t you remember I’ve promised to help Alan mover
all his books and things after my lecture today. He’s moving to a new flat and his car was broke down. I’ve got to
help him move his things. He can’t stay in the old flat after today. I promised him.
Mother: All right, all right. Of course, you must keep your promise. I remember now, you did tell me. But I
thought you said next Wednesday. You said the 9th and that’s next week when I am in Birmingham for a meeting
so I shan’t need the car.
Matthew: I didn’t ask for it next Wednesday. I’ve got an exam next Wednesday! I can’t help Alan when I am
doing an exam, can’t I?
Mother: No, I suppose not. Well, I expect you are right. I didn’t write it down so it’s my fault. Next time we must
both write it down. And make sure we write down the same date.
Matthew: I will give you a lift there on my way to college. How about that?
Conversation 3:
Interviewer: This morning we have Rob Stevens with us. Rob is the manager of the new shopping center just
outside the city. Hello Rob, welcome to the show.
Interviewer: Rob, the new shopping center has been open for six months now, hasn’t it? How popular is it?
Rob: Actually we have been open since February, to be exact so that adds a couple of months, and it has been
really busy all this time, to tell the truth.
Interviewer: Why do you think so many people are visiting it even though it is not in the city centre? I mean, it’s
a ten-minute drive out of the city, isn’t it? Doesn’t that put people off a bit?
Rob: No, not at all. In fact, a lot of people like the fact that it is in an area with easy parking and lots of space.
Also, if you don’t drive or don’t want to use your car there is a very good bus service that is free to and from the
city center. The car park is also free, which is a big advantage, as parking in the city is usually limited to one hour
before you have to move your car.
Interviewer: I see. But there are a lot more facilities apart from shops, too, aren’t there?
Rob: Yes, of course. There are nearly 20 cafes and restaurants offering many different kinds of food. Also, there
is a play area for young children and you can leave your kids there while you go and do your shopping in peace.

Talk/Lecture/Conversation 1:
Well, there’s nothing quite like finding your first old ship – it was 300 years old. Well, there’s
nothing quite like finding your first Ok just lying at the bottom of the sea, so it wasn’t difficult to find.
Most are covered in sand and rocks – but this one wasn’t.
I am actually a teacher, not a full time diver – I dive in my free time but I often get to them before
the professional divers, because I have good up-to-date equipment. Another thing that helps is talking to
fish-men who tell me about their local area. I have even written a book about some of their experiences.
At the moment, I am looking for the gold from a ship called The Sea Bird. It was an enormous
well-built ship and it was coming from Australia on a winter night in 1859. Everything was going fine
until the ship reached the English coast, when it crashed into some rocs in a very strong wind and sank to
the bottom of the sea. It was carrying gold from Australia, and most it is still at the bottom of the sea.
My wedding ring is actually made from gold which I found on an eighteenth-century sailing trip.
A friend of mine, another diver, has already found 88,000 pounds worth of gold from different ship. He’s
now decided to give up his job and become a full-time diver.
My house is full of things like coins, bottles and old guns. My wife is always complaining about
the number of objects around the house – she says I should open an antique shop – but I love all these old
things. Anyway, in the end, I gave some things from my collection to museum, because I didn’t want to
sell them. But my wife still wasn’t very pleased, I’m afraid.
As diving is a dangerous hobby, it’s not a good idea to try teach yourself. I’d advise anyone
interested to do what I did. There are some excellent diving clubs like the one I joined, which run courses
for beginners. It is best to do one these before you go on a diving holiday.
Talk/Lecture/Conversation 2:
Good morning everyone. After a good night’s sleep, I hope you have all recovered from your long
journey and are now ready to begin the holiday of a lifetime at the Oasis Hotel. My name is Steven and I
am your Sunny Tours rep for the week. You can usually find me chatting to holidaymakers somewhere in
the hotel or you can leave a message for me in my office next to the bar and I’ll get back to you. I’m
always in the office between 10 and 11 in the morning or 6 and 7 in the evening.
Now, I’d like to tell you about the mid-week excursion to the volcano. This is always a very popular
excursion, so I’d advise you to book soon to avoid disappointment. The cost is £20 per person and this
includes the coach trip to the harbor, the boat to the volcano and a welcome drink when you board the
boat. You need to take a packed lunch and the hotel can provide one for you at a very reasonable rate, if
you ask them the night before. The coach leaves at 9 o’clock sharp from outside the main entrance and
will return at 5 pm, just in time for dinner. Children over the age of 12 are welcome. Unfortunately, the
excursion is not suitable for younger children. The hotel has a crèche and toddler club which opens at
7.30 am for four hours and then again in the early evening between six and eight. You may already have
seen that the hotel has a fantastic, state-of-the-art gym. This is free to all hotel guest. A massage facility,
hair styling, aerobics classes and yoga classes are on offer. The first costs £5 an hour and yoga is offered
for £4.50 an hour. On Sunday morning, the fitness instructors offer water aerobics at 10 am followed by
circuit training back in the gym at 11.15.

Talk/Lecture/Conversation 3:
Man: Jennifer, you’re only sixteen but have already taken part in several comedy shows. When did you
first realize you were good at telling jokes?
Jennifer: I’ve always tried to make people laugh. At home, though, I was never sure if everyone was
laughing to keep me happy, or if my jokes were actually funny. This changed when I went to a big-name
comedy show and chatted with one of the stars. I tried one of my jokes on him and he laughed, which
gave me enough confidence to try performing in a school show.
Jennifer: Well, what seems to get the most laughs is when I take day-to-day things that have happened to
me and change them a bit so they’re funnier. Any technique suggested by someone else, like seeing the
news on TV and creating jokes based on that, has never worked well for me.
Man: What do your classmates at school think about you being a comedian?
Jennifer: A lot of them are creative, but because nobody else does comedy they’re pleased to have
someone they know who’s got those skills. It’s good for the school and my classmates like telling their
friends about me. They all say they expected me to do well, which I find surprising.
Jennifer: My teachers have been fantastic in encouraging me. As they’re not comedians, though, it’s hard
for them to help me improve. Seeing how the audience reacts tells me directly whether my material’s
working or not, which has pushed me to do better more than anything else. I pick up ideas watching my
favourite comedians in films too.
Jennifer: When I was younger, I used to dream of being a doctor - I liked the idea of helping people.
Obviously comedy helps people - it’s good for us to laugh - but I think it would being funny if it was my
job. I enjoy the shows too much to give them up totally, but I’d rather do something else.
