Sustainable Development Sustainable development means development that meets the need of present without compromising the ability

of future generation to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is maintaining a delicate balance between the human need to improve lifestyle and feeling of well being on one hand and preserving natural resources and eco system, on which we and future generations depend.

Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission.
Basic concept of sustainable development Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity. the field of sustainable development conceptually broken into 3 parts. Environmental sustainability Economic sustainability Socio political sustainability Some people also believe that the concept of sustainable development should include preserving the environment for other species as well as for people.

SCOPE AND TOOLS In 1987 the united nation released the Brundtland report, which defines sustainable development which meets the needs of present with respect to future needs. The un 2005 world summit defines sustainable development as economic development, social development and environment protection. The universal declaration on cultural diversity (unesco ,2001) Further elaborate the sustainable development concepts by cultural diversity is the fourth policy area of sustainable development. The essence of the form of development is a stable relationship between human activities and the natural world, which does not diminish the prospect for future generation to enjoy the quality of life at least as good as our own. CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES Concepts in the form of strategies, tools, ideas, and models are weapons that we can use to achieve sustainability .over the last few decades , a no of such sustainability concepts have been developed different purposes, targeting a sustainable future. Earth summit in in rio ,Brazil 1992 At the 1992 UN conference on environment and development (the rio earth summit), the convention on biological diversity (cbd) was born, 192 countries, plus the EU. In april 2002 the parties to the convention committed to significantly reduce the loss of diversity loss by 2010.

HISTORY OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 1987 = UN general assembly 1992 = agenda 21 1997 =Kyoto climate summit 1980 = world conservation strategy Rio-principles of sustainable development 1. People are so entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature. 2. Development today must not undermine the development and environment needs of present and future generations. 3. Nations have the sovereign right to exploit their own resource, But with out causing environmental damage beyond their borders. 4. Nations shall develop international laws to provide compensation for damage activities. 5. Prevention of environmental degradation. 6. Protection of eco system. 7. Avoid pollution and polluter should bear the cost of pollution. 8. Participation of citizens including children and women. 9. Reduction and elimination of unsustainable pattern of production and consumption. TERMS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELPOMENT Carrying capacity; the carrying capacity is the number of individuals an environment can support with out degradation. Ecological foot print; it is the biologically productive area required to produce the natural resource you consume and the land required to dispose off the waste you generate

Steps In achieving sustainable development 1. Cleaner production; it is a preventive measure to manage the environmental impact of business processes and products. it uses changes in technology , resources , reduce waste.it is applicable to all business. 2. Eco-labelling; these are affixed to products that pass ecofriendly criteria laid down by govt association etc. 3. Environmental impact assessment; it is a project specific tool used to identify and assess the actual and potential environmental implication of a project before the project commences. 4. Environmental account; ema is broadly defined as the identification, collection , and use of physical flow information. 5. Environment management system; it is a voluntary mgt tool that provides a frame work for an org to pro-actively manage its potential and actual environmental risks and opportunities. 6. Environmental sound technologies; it minimize environmental degradation by maintaining or improving quality of life. 7. Urban ecosystem; Eco systems of urban areas .it is a hybrid of natural and manmade elements. 8. Reduce; Reduce the use of non renewable natural resources .so that sustainable development will be very easy to attain .

CONCLUSION The development has to be there, but it must be sustainable, means we will have science and technology for easy life ,but the development will sustain longer than todays approach. We must control use of chemicals, nuclear radiations ,carbon emission. Usage of solar power, rainwater harvesting, biogas, minimum plastic usage, organic farming, reducing the usage Of vehicles etc are good measures to support sustainable development .the damage due to manmade material is not repairable by money or other manmade material at least today. If today we are not able to control nature by science and technology do you think we can do so in future? We must try to protect our mother planet honestly. Every thing that is born is going to die , but let it be at least a natural death
