This is just a predicted paper by CAIE Examiners. Entire reliance on this paper is
strictly not advised. Nishaan is and will not be responsible in case of any
unprecedented situation.
For an IGCSE Chemistry M/J 2025 guess paper, expect a strong focus on core
concepts like atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table, states of
matter, chemical reactions, energy changes, acids and bases, organic chemistry,
and practical applications, with a mix of multiple-choice, structured, and
calculation questions, drawing heavily from past papers and the official syllabus
to ensure comprehensive coverage of potential exam topics.
Basic Concepts:
● Atomic structure and the periodic table (electron configuration, trends across
the periodic table)
● Chemical bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic bonding)
● States of matter and phase changes
● Chemical equations and calculations (balancing equations, mole concept,
stoichiometry)
● Types of chemical reactions (exothermic, endothermic, redox, precipitation)
● Rates of reaction (factors affecting rate, collision theory)
● Acids and bases (properties, pH scale, neutralization reactions)
● Organic chemistry (alkanes, alkenes, functional groups, polymerization)
● Practical skills (laboratory techniques, data analysis, safety precautions)
1. (a) Define isotopes and explain how they differ from each other.
(b) The element potassium (K) is in Group 1 of the periodic table. What is the
electron configuration of a potassium atom? Describe one trend across Group 1
elements.
2. (a) Explain the difference between ionic and covalent bonding, using an example
of each.
(b) Sodium chloride (NaCl) forms an ionic bond. Describe how electrons are
transferred between sodium and chlorine atoms during this process.
3. (a) Write the balanced equation for the reaction between hydrochloric acid (HCl)
and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
(b) Define oxidation and reduction in terms of electron transfer. Give an example
of each process using the reaction between magnesium and oxygen.
4. (a) The rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium increases
with temperature. State two other factors that affect the rate of reaction.
(b) If a reaction has a high activation energy, what effect will this have on the
reaction rate at a given temperature?
6. (a) The molecular formula of an alkene is C₄H₈. Write the structural formula of
this alkene and give its name.
(b) Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) is a type of alcohol. Describe the process of converting
ethanol to ethanoic acid.
7. (a) During a titration, you add sodium hydroxide to hydrochloric acid until the
solution is neutral. Write the equation for the neutralization reaction.
(b) What safety precautions should you take when handling hydrochloric acid?
8. A student heats a solid salt in a test tube and observes a color change. What
should the student do if the solid salt is suspected to be toxic?
2. In a reaction between hydrogen gas (H₂) and oxygen gas (O₂) to form water
(H₂O):
○ 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
○ (a) How many moles of hydrogen are needed to react with 1 mole of
oxygen?
○ (b) If 4 moles of hydrogen are available, how many moles of water will be
produced?
3. The table below shows the results from a titration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
with hydrochloric acid (HCl):
Volume of NaOH (cm³) Volume of HCl (cm³)
20 25
25 30
30 37.5
40 50
(a) Calculate the concentration of HCl if the concentration of NaOH is 0.1 mol/dm³.
(b) Suggest why phenolphthalein is used as an indicator in this titration.
