Definitions Knowledge Management

Knowledge management is the process of capturing, distributing and effectively using


knowledge.

Knowledge Management Process

The route information follows in order to become transformed into a valuable strategic asset
for organizations via a knowledge management cycle

Aims of KM Processes

• Identify and locate knowledge and knowledge sources within the organization

• Translate valuable knowledge into explicit form (codification of knowledge) to facilitate


widespread dissemination

• Institute networks, practices, and incentives to facilitate person-to-person knowledge


transfer

• Make person-knowledge content connections to make decision

Knowledge management Life cycle or Process Chain

Acquire:

Knowledge acquired through socialization tacit to tacit or explicit knowledge. Tacit to tacit
knowledge acquired in various ways. Attending seminars, lectures, conducting interviews etc.
explicit knowledge acquired from documents, texts, books audios, videos etc.
Creation:

Knowledge is created either as explicit or tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is put in paper
or electronic format. It is recorded and made accessible to others. Tacit knowledge is created
in minds of people. This knowledge needs to be transformed into explicit knowledge so that it
can recorded and shared with others in the organization.
Storage/synthesize:

Knowledge is stored and organized in a repository. The objective of this phase to enable
organization to be able to contribute, organize knowledge.

Sharing:

Knowledge is shared and accessed by people.

Use to achieve organizational goals:

The knowledge management does not have any value if knowledge created is not utilized to
its potential. The more knowledge is created as knowledge is applied and utilized. So tackle
or solve the problems through knowledge. For the betterment or development of origination
to achieve its goals.

Environment conductive to knowledge sharing:

Conduct workshops, meetings, held seminars conferences to share the knowledge.

Then cycle restart from here. People acquire knowledge from this environment and process of
the wheel remain continue.
Criteria for Selection of KM Frameworks

• Implemented and validated in real-world settings

• Comprehensive with respect to the different types of steps found in the KM

literature

• Included detailed descriptions of the KM processes involved in each of the steps
