Assignment 3
Q1. A sample of seven measurements, randomly selected from a normally distributed popu-
lation, resulted in the following summary statistics: the sample mean 10.8 and sample
standard deviation s = 3.2.
(a) Test the null hypothesis that the mean of the population is 8 against the alterna-
tive hypothesis, µ > 8. Use α = 0.05.
(b) Test the null hypothesis that the mean of the population is 8 against the alterna-
tive hypothesis, µ 6= 8. Use α = 0.05.
(c) Find the p value for each test.
Q2. A random sample of 64 observations produced the following summary statistics: the
sample mean 78.2 and sample standard deviation 50.
(a) Test the null hypothesis that µ = 90 against the alternative hypothesis that
µ < 90, using α = 0.05.
(b) Test the null hypothesis that µ = 90 against the alternative hypothesis that
µ 6= 90, using α = 0.05. Interpret the result.
(c) Find the p value for each test.
Q3. The data for a random sample of 10 paired observations are shown in the following
table
(a) If you wish to test whether these data are sufficient to indicate that the mean for
population 2 is larger than that for population 1, what are the appropriate null
and alternative hypotheses? Define any symbols you use.
(b) Conduct the test from part (a), using α = .10. What is your decision?
x 1 5 3 2 6 6 0
y 1 3 3 1 4 5 1
(a) Use the method of least squares to fit a straight line to the seven data points in
the table.
(b) Specify the null and alternative hypotheses you would use to test whether the
data provide sufficient evidence to indicate that x contributes information for the
(linear) prediction of y.
(c) What is the test statistic that should be used in conducting the hypothesis test
of part (b)?
(d) Specify the number of degrees of freedom associated with the test statistic.
(e) Conduct the hypothesis test of part (b), using α = 0.05.
(f) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the slope, β1 .
Q5. For a comparison of the rates of defectives produced by two assembly lines, independent
random samples of 100 items were selected from each line. Line A yielded 18 defectives
in the sample, and line B yielded 12 defectives.
(a) Find a 98% confidence interval for the true difference in proportions of defectives
for the two lines.
(b) Is there evidence here to suggest that one line produces a higher proportion of
defectives than the other?
Q6. The braking ability of two types of automobiles was compared. Random samples of 64
automobiles were tested for each type. The recorded measurement was the distance
required to stop when the brakes were applied at 40 miles per hour. The computed
sample means and variances were as follows:
Do the data provide sufficient evidence to indicate a difference in the mean stopping
distances of the two types of automobiles? Give the attained significance level.
