Methodology on Periodic-Maintenance-of-Umoja-01-Area

Mobilization
The following activities is scheduled to take place; setting up of site office, project publicity
board, assembling of equipment, staff and lab equipment.
1) Health, safety Management and Risk management
To achieve safety, the following measures are to be taken;
 All excavation areas are to be clearly demarcated with warning tape.
 Members of the public will be prohibited from accessing the site.
 Dust control will be adhered, to avoid reduced visibility and endangering the health of the
public.
 Installation of sufficient road signs to warn the public of ongoing road construction
activities.
 All excavated areas will be kept free of water to avoid breeding of mosquitoes and
drowning of animals and people.
 Having a well-trained safety inspector with a fully stocked First Aid kit and identification
of the nearest Hospital.
 All stockpiles will be clearly examined to ensure slope stability and void toppling of
debris.
Proposed equipment
 Warning signs
 Warning tape
 Personal protective equipment; helmets, gloves, safety shoes, goggles and reflector
jacket.
2) Stakeholder’s Management
The following stakeholders are identified; local residents, pedestrians, drivers, county
government, KURA, Contractor, Civil authorities, community leaders and County
government. The following, will help us achieve synergy during the proposed works;
 Schedule regular meetings amongst the stakeholders.
 Provide a complaints box where members of the public can address there queries.
 Ensure all stakeholders are aware of the various milestones of the project and the
public is fully aware of the disruptions likely to be caused.
 Provide a channel of communication to all the stakeholders.
 Act as a link between members of the public and the employer and ensure their
grievances are well addressed.
 We also commit to pay all service providers in good time to avoid conflicts.
3) Staff Management
The following regulations are proposed for staff management:
 Ensure that all support staff and casual laborers are obtained from the local community.
 Sensitization on HIV/AIDS.
 Training on professional ethics and standards so as to ensure the staff observe decorum,
integrity and ensure a harmonious environment between members of the public and staff.
 Emphasize on Zero tolerance to corruption.
 We also strive to ensure there is no sexual harassment amongst the internal staff and
members of the public. We also seek to ensure that gender balance is adhered to and
there is more than 2/3rd representation of any gender.
4) Transfer of Knowledge
To transfer knowledge, the following is proposed; training of student attaches, one per every
quarter of the year during the construction period. We also propose to train the non-technical
staff on skills on road construction.
5) Traffic Management
We propose the following as part of traffic management;
 A traffic marshal will direct all oncoming vehicles and clearly highlight the hazards.
 To ensure seamless flow of traffics, a diversion will be created where the road reserve
allows or alternative routes will be clearly highlighted by the traffic marshal.
 All the hazards will be clearly demarcated with the appropriate road signs. The speed
limit will be clearly highlighted to all the drivers.
6) Setting out and survey
The site will be well surveyed with determination of the centerline and the carriageway. The
centerline will be demarcated in intervals of 20.0m. We will also establish the control points. The
following survey equipment is proposed;
 RTK machine
 Total Station
 Measuring tape.
 Dumpy level
 GPS
7) Site clearance and topsoil stripping
The following activities are proposed:
 Demolishing of reinforced concrete and cart to spoil or stockpiling.
 Clear site on road reserve by removal of trees, hedges, bushes, vegetation and other
deleterious materials.
 Excavate, remove and dispose cracked pipe culverts below 600mm in diameter.
 Removal of encroaching structures and reinstatement of road reserve.
The following equipment are proposed;
 Excavator
 Bulldozer
 Tippers and trucks.
8) Earth works
Before all earthworks are done, accurate levels will be taken to ensure accurate material take
offs and the desired RFL. The following key activities are proposed:
 Filling in soft- Granular soil will be compacted in layers not exceeding 150mm. The
soil must be plastic and compacted to MDD. To achieve optimal compaction, the
roller will pass a minimum of eight times over each subsequent layer.
 Filling in hard- In areas where the OGL has poor strength qualities, suitable rocks
will be added and they should be 150mm-250mm. The rocks will be hand-packed and
a roller will pass over them.
The following tests are proposed;
 Proctor test
 Plasticity test
The following equipment are proposed;
 Grader
 Sheep’s foot roller
 Flat drum roller
 Tipper truck.
9) Excavation and filling for structures
For all the drainage works, the invert level will be determined through survey. To ensure
stability of formation level, stone pitching will be laid and a cement grout ratio (1:4) will be
laid.
10) Culverts and Drainage works.
The following activities are proposed: Desilt, shape inlets outfalls, side drains to free flow
conditions-Drain cleaning, excavate for inlet, outfall, mitre and catchwater drains in soft
material, laying of side slabs, laying of dressed stones, Manhole cleaning, clean culverts to
free flow conditions and laying of joint pipe culverts of the following dimensions;
300,450,600,900 and 1200mm.
The following equipment are proposed; Concrete mixer and concrete vibrator.
The following lab tests are proposed; compressive strength test, workability tests, tests on
aggregates like: sieve analysis for size distribution, crushing and impact tests for strength,
abrasion test for resistance to wear, shape tests (flakiness and elongation) for particle
geometry, and soundness and specific gravity tests for durability and density
11) Natural material base and subbase
Provide, lay and compact hand packed stone material including filling of voids with stone
dust. Provide, spread, shape and compact approved quarry waste. Provide, spread, shape and
compact approved natural gravel .Scarify mechanically the existing pavement layer, and
compact. The following tests are to be done: MDD and proctor tests and plasticity tests.

12) Bituminous surf. treat.& s dressing

Prepare surface of carriageway and repair areas, provide and spray MC-30
cutback bitumen at a rate of 0.8-1.2 lt/m2 as prime coat and Prepare surface of repair areas
provide and spray K1-60 bitumen emulsion as tack coat or seal to repair areas at a spray
rate of 0.8 - 1.2 L/m2 as directed.
The following equipment is proposed; bitumen sprayer etc.
The following tests will be conducted on the bitumen; penetration, ductility, softening point,
viscosity, flash and fire point, and specific gravity tests.
13) Bituminous mixes.
Provide, place and compact asphaltic concrete Type 1 to reconstruction, repair areas
and regulation to carriageway as directed and place and compact 50 mm or 35mm thick
asphalt concrete Type 1 with 5 - 6 % nominal bitumen content by weight to total
mix as wearing course on carriageway as directed by the Engineer.
The following equipment is proposed; pneumatic tire rollers and asphaltic pavement placer.
The following tests are proposed: penetration, ductility, softening point, viscosity, and flash
point tests.
14) Road Furniture
We will install the road signs as specified including: informatory, warning and descriptive
road signs.
