CAMBRIDGE O LEVEL

MATHEMATICS (PROBABILITY)

PAPER 1

Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Instructions:
- Answer all questions.
- Show all working clearly.
- You may use a calculator where appropriate.
- All answers should be given in fraction or decimal form where necessary.

1. A bag contains 3 red, 4 blue, and 5 green balls. A ball is drawn at random.

(a) Find the probability of drawing a red ball.

(b) Find the probability of drawing a blue or green ball.

2. A die is rolled once. Find the probability that:

(a) The number rolled is a prime number.

(b) The number rolled is greater than 4.

3. A coin is tossed twice.

(a) List the sample space.

(b) Find the probability of getting at least one head.

4. A spinner has 8 equal sections numbered 1 to 8.

(a) Find the probability of landing on an even number.

(b) Find the probability of landing on a number greater than 6.

5. A class has 10 boys and 15 girls. A student is selected at random.

(a) Find the probability that the student is a boy.

(b) Find the probability that the student is not a girl.

6. A bag contains 4 red, 3 blue, and 3 white marbles. Two marbles are drawn without replacement.
(a) Find the probability that both are red.

(b) Find the probability that one is red and one is blue.
7. Two dice are rolled together.

(a) Find the probability that the sum is 7.

(b) Find the probability that the numbers are the same.
8. A card is drawn from a standard deck of 52 playing cards.
(a) Find the probability that it is a heart.

(b) Find the probability that it is a face card (King, Queen, or Jack).
9. A school committee consists of 3 teachers and 5 students. A person is selected at random.

(a) Find the probability that the person is a teacher.

(b) Find the probability that the person is a student.

10. A factory produces 1000 light bulbs, of which 50 are defective. A bulb is chosen at random.
Find the probability that it is not defective.

11. A die is rolled twice.

(a) Find the probability that both rolls show a number greater than 3.

(b) Find the probability that the sum is at most 5.

12. A family has three children. Assuming equal probability of boys and girls,

find the probability that they have exactly two boys.

13. A bag contains 2 red, 3 green, and 5 yellow marbles. If one marble is drawn at random,

find the probability that it is not green.

14. A school has 120 students, of which 40 take Mathematics and 80 take Science. If one student is
chosen at random,

find the probability that they take both subjects.

15. A box contains 5 pens, 3 pencils, and 2 erasers. One item is drawn at random.

(a) Find the probability that it is a pen.

(b) Find the probability that it is not an eraser.

find the probability that a randomly chosen product is defective.

17. A deck of 52 cards is shuffled, and a card is drawn.

(a) Find the probability that it is a spade.

(b) Find the probability that it is a number card (2-10).

18. A class has 30 students, 12 of whom are left-handed. A student is selected at random.

Find the probability that they are right-handed.

19. A football team wins 60% of its matches. If they play one match,

find the probability that they lose.

20. A factory makes 5000 laptops, 100 of which are defective. One laptop is chosen at random.
Find the probability that it is not defective.
