Q.19) What is an electric dipole? Derive an expression for the torque experienced by an electric dipole of dipole moment
p in a uniform electric field E .

Q.20) Define the capacitance of a capacitor. Obtain the expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor in
vacuum in terms of plate area A and seperation d between the plates.

Derive an expression for the potential energy of an electric dipole of dipole moment p in an electric field E .
Section – D (5 Marks Each)
Q.21) State Gauss's law in electrostatics. Derive an expression for the electric field due to an infinitely long straight
uniformly charged wire. Also draw the graph between E and r .
Q.22) State the two laws of Kirchhoff’s . Two cells of emfs 1.5 V and 2.0 V and internal resistance 1 ohm and 2 ohm
respectively are connected in parallel so as to send current in the same direction through an external resistance of 5
ohm.

(i) Draw the circuit diagram.

(ii) Using Kirchhoff’s laws, calculate

(a)​ Current through each branch of the circuit.

(b)​ Potential difference across the 5 ohm resistance.

Case Study (Effect Of Dielectric On Capacitance)
The capacitance of parallel plate capacitors is modified when a dielectric is present . The dielectric constant of a
substance is the factor by which the capacitance increases from its vacuum value, when the dielectric is inserted fully
between the plates of a capacitor.

Q.23) Read the above paragraph carefully and answer the following questions.

a) In a parallel plate capacitor, the capacitance increases from 4 microfarad to 80 microfarad on introducing a
dielectric medium between the plates. What is the dielectric constant of the medium?
b) What is the value of dielectric constant for metal ?
c) A slab of material of dielectric constant K has the same area as the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor but has a
thickness (3/4) d , where d is the seperation of the plates. How is the capacitance changed when the slab is
inserted between the plates ?
