Homework: The History of Cinema
Introduction and General Definition of Film
Film is an art form that allows us to tell stories through moving images and sound. It originated over 100 years ago and has evolved greatly since then. In film, actors, scripts, cameras, lights and music combine to create films that entertain us, teach us and make us dream. Films can be of different genres, such as adventure, comedy, drama, action, horror, among others. Main Characteristics of the Medieval Period in Cinema Although cinema did not exist in the medieval period (around the 5th to 15th centuries), stories from this period have been very popular in cinema films. During the Middle Ages, people lived in castles and villages, fought in battles, and believed in fantastic creatures such as dragons and fairies. Films of this type often feature large castles, brave knights, and monsters. Although one cannot speak of cinema in the Middle Ages, the stories of this period inspired many films that were made later, such as medieval adventures, epic battles and romances. That is why in modern cinema we see many films that tell stories from that time, such as Lord of the Rings or Dragon Slayers.
Research on an Outstanding Precursor
One of the most important precursors of cinema was Thomas Edison, an American inventor. It was Edison who invented the motion picture camera called the ‘kinetoscope’ in 1891. His invention made it possible to record and project the first moving pictures. Although Edison was not the only inventor of cinema, his work was key to later creating the magic of cinema as we know it today. Example of a Representative Work One of the first important films to be made in the history of cinema was ‘The Arrival of the Train’ (1896), directed by the Lumière brothers. This film shows a train arriving at a station, and was so impressive to the people of the time that many were frightened that the train was going to come out of the screen and run them over. Imagine what it was like to see something like this for the first time! Impact or Legacy of Cinema Cinema has had a huge impact on culture and the way we see the world. Since its inception, it has been a form of entertainment, but it has also had a great impact on the way we see the world.
