What is Internet

The internet is the wider network that allows computer networks around the world run by
companies, governments, universities and other organizations to talk to one another. It is also
called network of networks.

Internet Terminologies
Browse: The process of moving through a Web site or "surfing the Net," using a World Wide Web
browser and clicking on a variety of hyperlinks.
Browser (or Web browser): A program used to view, download, upload, surf, or otherwise
access documents (for example, Web pages) on the Internet. Google Chrome, Fire Fox, Opera
and Internet Explorer are well-known "Web browsers" that enable you to view and interact with
Web sites.

Content: The textual and graphical information contained in a Web site. Content also refers to
the structure and design in which the information is presented.

Domain name: The address or URL of a particular Web site; it is the text name corresponding to
the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. There is an organization called InterNIC
that registers domain names for a fee, to keep people from registering the same name

IP Address: The unique 32 bits(4 Bytes) address. An IP address is a string of numbers separated
by periods for example (192.168.1.1). The purpose of an IP address is to handle the connection
between devices that send and receive information across a network

Web Client: A Web client typically refers to the Web browser in the user's machine or mobile
device. It may also refer to extensions and helper applications that enhance the browser to
support special services from the site. Contrast with Web server

Web Server: A web server is a computer that runs websites. It's a computer program that
distributes web pages as they are requisitioned. The basic objective of the web server is to
store, process and deliver web pages to the users. This intercommunication is done using
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

Database Server: A database server is a server which uses a database application that provides
database services to other computer programs or to computers, as defined by the client–server
model

FAQ (short for frequently asked questions): a FAQ is an online document that poses a series of
common questions and answers on a specific topic

Home page (or home or homepage): The first page or front page of a Web site. It serves as the
starting point for navigation. It is also known as default or index page.
HTML (short for “Hypertext Markup Language”): The authoring language used to create
documents on the World Wide Web. HTML is a mark-up language (versus a programming
language) that uses tags to structure text into headings, paragraphs, lists, and links.

Hyperlink: An element in an electronic document that links to another place in the same
document or to an entirely different document. Typically, you click on the hyperlink to follow
the link.
Navigation bar (or nav bar): The set of directional tools presented on a Web site, or the
hyperlinked options that when clicked on take you to other sections of the site.

Upload: To copy a file from your local computer to a server or host system; the reverse process
of download.

World Wide Web. The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use, and the second
part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located.

Web page: A single HTML file that contains text and images, is part of a Web site, and has an
individual file name assigned to it. When viewed by a Web browser, this file could actually be
several screen dimensions long (appearing as more than "a page").

Web Site: A place on the Internet or World Wide Web. It refers to a body of information as a
whole, for a particular domain name. A Web site is a place made up of Web pages.

Internet Service Provider: A company that provides Internet connections and services to
individuals and organizations. For example PTCL, Worldcall, Wateen etc.

WEB Hosting: A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that hosts websites for
clients, i.e. it offers the facilities required for them to create and maintain a site and makes it
accessible on the World Wide Web.

Web Master: A webmaster can keep tabs on everything related to a website. They monitor its
performance with search engines, functionality, speed and design. Webmasters even keep track
of content, campaigns and marketing efforts

Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the data transfer capacity of a computer network in bits per second
(Bps). Bandwidth may be characterized as network bandwidth, data bandwidth, or digital
bandwidth

World Wide Web: A system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents.
The documents are formatted in a markup language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language)
that supports links to other documents, as well as graphics, audio, and video files. This means
you can jump from one document to another simply by clicking on hot spots.
