Who is Generating Big Data?

▪ Facebook: 1.39 billion monthly ▪ 4.9 billion

users devices
▪ YouTube: 300hrs video (2015)
uploaded/min
▪ Instagram: 70 Million photos/day

▪ Walmart: 1 million transactions ▪ ASKA Pathfinder: 36

each hour antennas stream
▪ Walmart holds 2.5 petabytes 250GB/sec/antenna
▪ LHC at CERN:15
petabytes/year

ASKA: Australian Square Kilometer Array LHC: Large Hadron Collider CERN: European Organization for Nuclear Research

Types of Big Data

● Unstructured Data
● Structured Data
● Semi Structured Data

Fundamentals of Data Analytics 9

Big Data Characteristics

● Volume: The quantity of

generated and stored data.
● Variety: Type and Nature of the
data
● Velocity: The speed of data: real-
time, continually, which relates to
frequency of generation, handling,
recording and publishing
● Veracity: Refers to data quality and
data value.
● Value: The utility that can be
extracted from the data

Lots of interesting data has a graph structure:

● Social networks
● Communication networks
● Computer Networks
● Road networks
● Citations
● Collaborations/Relationships
● …
● Some of these graphs can get quite large
(e.g., Facebook user graph)

Fundamentals of Data Analytics 11

Big Data Applications
● Healthcare: Computer algorithms are
already better in analyzing medical images
(like MRI, CT, or PET scans) than human
doctors.
● Business: The revenue management system
in the leisure sector is completely based on
algorithms. Using all kinds of data sources –
your own surfing behavior, the weather, the
popularity of a flight or hotel room – prices
can differ every minute.
● Smart Cities: City analytics is developing
fast, for example in the field of image
recognition via camera use.
● Security: Datasets are used to analyze big
‘marijuana networks’ in the Netherlands,
resulting in some interesting findings that
would never come up without data
scientists. For example, it is better for the
police to focus on the technology-savvy
people in these networks, instead of the big
bosses.

Why Data Visualization is important in Data Analytics?
● Data visualization is essential in data science as it enables effective
exploration and communication of insights from complex datasets.

● Visual representations of data make it easier to identify patterns, trends, and

outliers, leading to better understanding and decision-making.

● The key components of data visualization include:

○ data representation (charts, graphs, maps),
○ visual encodings (color, size, shape),
○ scales and axes, labels and annotations,
○ and interactive elements (zooming, filtering).

● These components work together to convey information and facilitate

meaningful interpretation of data.
