TASK 1 How unlikely is it?

1 The probability that it will rain tomorrow is 0.65. What is the probability that it will not
rain tomorrow?

2 The probability that Kai’s bus arrives late is 0.3. What is the probability that Kai’s bus in
on time?

3 The probability that the school cricket team will win their next match is 58%. The
probability that they will lose is 23%.

a) What is the probability that the team will not win or lose their next match?

b) If the team does not win or lose, what is the outcome of the game?

4 A fair spinner has 5 sections labelled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The spinner is spun once.

a) What is the probability that the spinner does not land on an even number?

b) What is the probability that the spinner does not land on a prime number?

5 A lucky dip contains toy animals. There are 8 lions, 6 elephants, 9 zebras and 11 cheetahs
in the box. Suki picks a toy from the lucky dip box. She needs an elephant to complete her
set of animals.

What is the probability that Suki does not get an elephant? Give your answer as a fraction
in its simplest form.

1 This table shows the flavour of sweets in a bag.

Ambia takes a sweet at random from the bag.

a) What is the probability that Ambia does not pick a lime sweet?

b) Ambia prefers the citrus flavour sweets to the cherry flavour. What is the probability that
Ambia does not pick one of her favourite flavours?
