Materials:
One skein Manos del Uruguay “Alegria Grande” (75% Extra Fine
Merino, 25% nylon, 180m/197 yds, 100g), color AG 2121 Cinnamon
(Mc)
One skein Manos del Uruguay “Alegria Grande” (75% Extra Fine
Merino, 25% nylon, 180m/197 yds, 100g), color AG 8855 Pindo (Cc)
16” Size US 6 circular knitting needles
16” Size US 7 circular knitting needles
Set of four size US 7 double pointed knitting needles
Nine stitch markers (one of a different color)
Yarn needle or large embroidery needle

Gauge: 5 sts and 7 rows to 1” on stockinette stitch (circular gauge) using


larger knitting needles

Abbreviations:
Beg = Begin(ning)(s)
Btwn = Between
Cc = Contrasting color
Co = Cast on
Cont = Continue
Dpn = Double pointed needles
G = Gram(s)
K = Knit
K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together (makes decrease of 1 stitch)
M = Meter(s)
Mc = Main color
Oz = Ounce(s)
P = Purl
Pm = Place stitch marker on needle
Rem = Remain(ed)(ing)(s)
Rep(s) = Repeat(ed)(ing)(s)
Rnd(s) = Round(s)
St(s) = Stitch(es)
W/ = With
Yd(s) = Yard(s)

Directions:
Beg at brim of hat
Using smaller circular needle and mc, cast on 92 (96) sts. Pm to indicate
beg of rnds. Join to work in rnds.

Latvian Braid:
Rnds 1 – 2: W/ mc, p.
Rnd 3: (K1 w/ mc, k1w/ cc) rep to end.
Left pointing braid:
Rnd 4: Bring both yarns to the front of your work with the main color on top
to start, p1 w/mc, bring cc on top of mc yarn and p1. Cont twisting yarns
over each other as you p into like colors. Do not try to unwind yarn as you
work, it will untwist on the next rnd.
Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 4 wrapping the yarns under each other rather than over.
Rnd 6: W/ mc k.
Rnds 7 – 8: W/ mc, p.
Rnd 9: (W/ mc k2, w/ cc k2) rep to end.
Rnds 10 – 15: (W/ mc k2, w/ cc p2) rep to end.
Rnd 16: W/mc, k.
Rnds 17 – 18: W/ mc, p.
Rnd 19: Rep Rnd 3.
Rnd 20: Bring both yarns to the front of your work with the main color
under cc p1 w/mc, bring cc under of mc yarn and p1. Cont twisting yarns
under each other as you p into like colors.
Rnd 21: Rep Rnd 20 wrapping the yarns over each other rather than
under. Cut cc when done.
Rnd 22: With mc, k.
Rnds 23 – 24: With mc, p.
Change to larger needles and k every rnd with mc until hat measures 6”
from co edge.

Crown Decreases Small Size, using mc only:


Change to dpns when necessary.
Rnd 1: (K2tog, k44 sts, k2tog, k to end. (90 sts)
Rnd 2: (K10, pm) rep to end, leaving contrasting marker to denote beg
and end of rnd.
Rnd 3: (K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm) rep to end.
Rep Rnds 2 & 3 until 3 sts rem btwn markers.
Rep Rnd 3 until 1 st rems btwn markers.

Crown Dec Large size, using mc only:
Change to dpns when necessary.
Rnd 1: K7, k2tog, (k14, k2tog) 5x, k7. (90 sts)
Rnd 2: (K10, pm) rep to end, leaving contrasting marker to denote beg
and end of rnd.
Rnd 3: (K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm) rep to end.
Rep Rnds 2 & 3 until 3 sts rem btwn markers.
Rep Rnd 3 until 1 st rems btwn markers.

Finishing
Cut yarn end to 6”. Thread yarn end through yarn needle. Insert
threaded needle through sts left on needles in same order as you would
have knitted them. This closes the top of the hat. Pull tight and push yarn
needle through to inside of hat. Weave through sts to secure. Weave in
all loose yarn ends. Block hat.
