Light

The document provides an overview of light, defining it as a form of energy that allows us to see and describing its properties such as reflection, refraction, and dispersion. It explains the types of light sources, the laws of reflection, and the characteristics of different types of mirrors. Additionally, it discusses practical applications of light in devices like periscopes, microscopes, telescopes, and optical fibers.

Light - Class 7

1. Definition of Light
o Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
o It travels in a straight line (rectilinear propagation of light).
2. Sources of Light
o Luminous objects: Objects that produce their own light (e.g., Sun, candle,
torch).
o Non-luminous objects: Objects that reflect light but do not produce their own
(e.g., Moon, book, mirror).
3. Properties of Light
o Reflection: Bouncing back of light when it hits a smooth surface.
o Refraction: Bending of light when it passes from one medium to another
(e.g., air to water).
o Dispersion: Splitting of white light into seven colors when passed through a
prism.
4. Reflection of Light
o Laws of Reflection:

2. The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection (∠i = ∠r).

1. The incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie in the same plane.

o Types of Reflection:

 Regular Reflection: Light reflects off a smooth surface (e.g., mirror).

 Diffuse Reflection: Light reflects off a rough surface (e.g., paper).
5. Mirrors and Their Types
o Plane Mirror: Forms virtual, upright, and same-size images.
o Concave Mirror: Can form real or virtual images depending on the object’s
position.
o Convex Mirror: Always forms virtual, diminished, and upright images.
6. Refraction of Light
o When light passes from one medium to another (e.g., air to water), it changes
speed and direction.
o If moving from air to glass, light bends towards the normal.
o If moving from glass to air, light bends away from the normal.
7. Dispersion of Light
o When white light passes through a prism, it splits into seven colors
(VIBGYOR).
o This happens because different colors have different wavelengths and bend by
different amounts..
8. Applications of Light

 Periscopes: Use mirrors to reflect light and help see over obstacles.
 Microscopes & Telescopes: Use lenses and mirrors to magnify images.
 Optical Fibres: Used in communication, work on total internal reflection.
