3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Chikondi grew up in a village called Nthukuso. She lived with her mother and father. The name of
her father was Mr. Damiano and her mother was Emily. At night she slept in her grandmother’s
house with other small girls. The bigger girls slept in a house of their own just like the big boys did.

The grandmother Mrs. Ntonyo, was very good to the girls. Every evening she told them stories. The
stories were about how they should live as good girls. She told the girls to obey their mother. She
also told them sad stories about girls who did not obey their mothers. In addition, she advised them
not to fear boys. She stressed that a girl who plays with boys will become clever and brave.

Mrs. Ntonyo did not explain why other grandmothers advised girls not to play with boys.
Grandmother knew a lot of things she used to tell her grandchildren different stories that happened
in the past when she was growing up. She also told folk tales about Kalulu the hare and Fisi the
hyena.

Chikondi and her friends always played before going to bed. They played different games such as
ogode and hide and seek. These games were being played when there was full moon. They also sang
many songs. But when there was no moon, nobody played. Instead, they listened to grandmother’s
endless stories. Grandmother had a habit of giving them lots of food to eat during the time of telling
stories. They cooked cassava, potatoes and roasted maize and groundnuts.

Like all other girls of her age, Chikondi did a lot of work around the house. She went with her
mother and her brother to fetch firewood. She also went with her friends, both boys and girls, to
fetch water. Her brothers claimed her grandmother’s house as well as her mother’s. They would

wash up the dishes together, before and after meals. “You have to be good cooks because one day
all of you are going to cook for your families,” grandmother would say.

Chikondi did not like to be told about marriage. She wanted to continue with school and work in
town when she grows up. She wanted to have a good job and be able to help her family. But her
friends were different. They wanted to get married first. They wanted to be looked after by their
husbands. Also, they wanted to have children. As a result, some of them got married before they
completed primary school.
