Connectives
Connectives for Expressing Contrast
Although / Though / Even though + clause
• ‘Although / Though / Even though’ are NOT used with ‘but’.
e.g.1. He was exhausted, but he could not sleep.

In spite of / Despite + noun phrase
• ‘In spite of / Despite’ is used with a noun or -ing form of a verb.
• ‘Despite’ is NOT used with ‘of’
e.g.2. Although the weather was bad, they still went for a hike.

e.g.3. I had advised her to, but she didn’t go and see a doctor.

e.g.4. Even though they took a map, they still lost their way.

In spite of / Despite the fact that + clause
• ‘In spite of / Despite the fact that’ is used with a clause.
• They are similar to ‘Although / Though / Even though’.

Connectives for Adding Information
• The following connectives are used for providing extra information or joining similar ideas:

Besides, Moreover, Meanwhile, (~ At the same time)


Furthermore, In addition, In the meantime, (~ While)
• Usually ‘besides’, ‘moreover’, ‘furthermore’ and ‘in addition’ are used at the beginning of the second
sentence.
• ‘Meanwhile’ and ‘In the meantime’ are used to talk about two events that occur at the same time.

e.g.1. My brother is quite hot-tempered. He is also irrational at times.

e.g.2 The security guard is taking a nap. Some delinquents are sneaking into the building.

Connectives for Expressing Purposes


• The following connectives are used for expressing purposes.

in order (not) to (+ verb) in order that (+ clause) for (noun / -ing)


so as (not) to (+ verb) so that (+ clause)
• ‘in order that’ or ‘in order to’ can be used at the beginning or the middle of a sentence; ‘so as to’
and ‘so that’ are usually used in the middle of a sentence only.
• We use can / can’t or will / won’t with “so that / in order that” at present or future time.
• We use could / couldn’t or would / wouldn’t with “so that / in order that” in the past.
• ‘for’ is used to express general purposes, while other connectives are for more specific purposes.

e.g.1. Mr. Lee wants to get some exercise. He walks to work.
