Instructions

1. This paper consists of Sections A and B with a total of fourteen (14) questions.
2. Answer all questions in sections A and section B. Each question in section A carries
six (6) marks while each Question in section B carries ten (10) marks.
3. All necessary working and answers for each questions attempted must be shown clearly.
4. NECTA Mathematical tables and non- programmable calculator may be used.
5. All communication devices and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination
room.
6. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer booklet(s).

SECTION A: (60 Marks)
Answer all questions.

1. (a) There are 150 people at a cricket match, 20% are children, one half are men
and the rest are women. How many women are at the cricket match?

(b) A floor of room with length 500𝑐𝑚 and 400𝑐𝑚 width is to be covered with
the largest size of the square tiles. If no space of the floor is to be left uncovered and the
cost of each square tiles is 2500 Tanzanian shillings. How much will it cost to cover
the floor of the room?

2. (a) Find the solution set (𝑥, 𝑦) if, 𝑥 𝑦+1 = = 256
𝑥 2−2𝑦
(b) Solve the following simultaneous logarithmic equations by using substitution method,

log 2 𝑥𝑦 2 = 0
log 2 (𝑥 2 𝑦) = 3

3. (a) In a certain town, there are 500 families. A survey indicated that 200 subscribed to
Mwananchi newspaper and 150 subscribed to Nipashe newspaper. Of these two
categories 50 subscribed to both. Find the number of families which did not subscribe
to any of these newspapers.

(b) A ball is picked at random from a box containing 5 identical balls, two of which are red
and three are white. Find the probability that a ball picked is red.

4. (a) Given that 𝑎 = 4𝑖 + 5𝑗, 𝑏 = 6𝑖 + 9𝑗. 𝐼𝑓 𝑣 = 2 𝑎 + 6 𝑏, determine.
(i) The magnitude of v
(ii) The direction of v

(b) An engineer is in the process of constructing two straight roads, 𝑅1 and 𝑅2 which will
meet at right angles. If 𝑅1 will be represented by the equation 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 − 4 = 0 and 𝑅2
will pass through the point 4, −2 , find the equation representing 𝑅2 in the form of
𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0

5. (a) A triangle 𝑋𝑌𝑍 is similar to triangle 𝐴𝐵𝐶 and 𝑋𝑌 = 8𝑐𝑚. If the area of triangle 𝑋𝑌𝑍 is
24𝑐𝑚2 and the area of triangle ABC is 96𝑐𝑚2 . Calculate the length of 𝐴𝐵

(b) ∆𝑃𝑄𝑅 is such that 𝑃𝑄 =𝑃𝑅 and 𝑃𝑄 : 𝑄𝑅 is equal to 3:4. If the perimeter of the triangle
is 45𝑐𝑚 calculate the value of 𝑄𝑅.

6. (a) How many bottles of 400𝑚𝑙 capacity will be filled from a bucket of water of capacity
20𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠?

(b) When the body is moving rapidly through the air, the air resistance 𝑅 𝑜ℎ𝑚𝑠 is directly
proportional to the square of the velocity 𝑉 𝑚/𝑠 . At a velocity of 50𝑚/𝑠 the air
resistance is 20 ohms.
(i) Find the velocity which gives a resistance of 200 𝑜ℎ𝑚𝑠
(Give your answer in 3 significant figures)

(ii) Find the resistance at 100𝑚/𝑠

7. (a) A businessman sold a TV at 𝑇𝑠ℎ 40 500/=. This price includes 10% Value Added Tax
(𝑉𝐴𝑇). Calculate the amount of 𝑉𝐴𝑇.

(b) (i) Miss Aisha started business on 1st July, 2023 with capital in cash60,000/=
July 2; Purchased goods and paid cash 40,000/=
3; Bought goods for cash 10,000/=
4; Sold goods for cash 30,000/=
5; Paid salary in cash 15,000/=
8; Sold goods in cash 25,000/=
8; Paid cash for travelling expenses 12,000/=
Prepare a trial balance

(ii) State any two importance’s of preparing a trial balance.

8. (a) A display in a supermarket is to have the form of a pyramid with 20 cans in the
bottom row, 19 on the next row, 18 cans on the next row and so on, with a single can at
the top. How many cans will be required for the display.

(b) Find the amount of money at the end of 3 years when Tsh. 200,000/= is invested at
the rate of 6% compounded semi - annually.

9. (a) Without using mathematical tables, evaluate .

25°. He walks in a straight line 30m closer to the foot of the tree. The angle of elevation

(b) The sum of two consecutive integers is 31. Find the smaller number

12. (a) Two towns A and B are located at (20𝑜 𝑆, 38𝑜 𝐸) and (20𝑜 𝑆,43𝑜 𝐸) respectively.
Find the distance between the two towns,
(i) In kilometers. (Use π=3.14, and R=6370)
(ii) In nautical miles.
(b) The figure below shows a box in which 𝐴𝐵 = 4cm, 𝐵𝐶 = 3cm and 𝐴𝑊 = 4cm
(i) Find the projection of 𝐴𝑌 on plane 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷.
(ii) Calculate the angle between line AY and the plane 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷.
(iii) Calculate the volume of the box.

13. (a) Naomi used a non-programmable calculator to find the inverse of matrix 𝑄,
unfortunately, the calculator displayed a text “Math error” on the screen.

(c) Find the image of (5, 6) under reflection on the line 𝑦 = 𝑥 , followed by a rotation about
90° clockwise from the origin.
14. (a) A manufacturer produces nuts and bolts. It takes 1hour of work on machine 𝐴 and 3 hours
on machine 𝐵 to produce a package of nuts. It takes 3 hours on machine 𝐴 and 1 hour on
machine 𝐵 to produce apackage of bolts. He earns a profit of £17.50 per package on nuts
and £7.00 per package on bolts. How many packages of each should be produced each
day so as to maximize his profit, given that he operates his machines for at most 12 hours
a day?
