Understanding the SG3524 PWM

Controller and its Feedback Regulation

Mechanism in Inverter Circuits
1. Introduction
The SG3524 is a versatile pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller IC widely used in
power electronics applications such as DC-AC inverters, buck/boost converters, and
regulated power supplies. It integrates all essential components required for
implementing switching regulation, including an onboard oscillator, reference voltage,
PWM comparator, error amplifier, and output transistors. In inverter circuits, the SG3524
is pivotal in generating the stable 50Hz AC output from a DC input source.

2. Pin Configuration of SG3524

The SG3524 has 16 pins with specific functionalities. Important ones include:
- Pin 1 (Inverting Input): Connected to the feedback signal for error comparison.
- Pin 2 (Non-inverting Input): Connected to a reference voltage (typically 5.1V from Pin
16).
- Pin 5 (Timing Resistor): Sets oscillation frequency in combination with the capacitor.
- Pin 6 (Timing Capacitor): Works with pin 5 to define the PWM frequency.
- Pin 7 (Discharge): Connected to timing capacitor for controlling discharge.
- Pin 8 (Ground): Connected to negative supply.
- Pin 15 (Vcc): Positive supply from the battery.
- Pin 16 (5.1V Reference Output): Stable internal reference used for comparison and
control.

3. PWM Generation and Frequency Control

To generate the required 50Hz AC signal, the SG3524 uses its internal oscillator circuit.
The frequency is set using components connected to pins 5 and 6:
- A resistor (RT) is connected to Pin 5 and a capacitor (CT) to Pin 6. Together, they
determine the oscillator frequency.
- A discharge pin (Pin 7) helps in resetting the timing capacitor.
Using appropriate values for RT and CT, a base frequency is produced. This frequency is
used to modulate the pulse width to control switching devices like MOSFETs, thereby
generating a 50Hz PWM signal which is later processed into a sinusoidal AC output.
4. Feedback Regulation Mechanism
Maintaining a stable output voltage (220V AC) is crucial in inverter design. The SG3524
uses a feedback loop to achieve this:
- The 220V AC output is first stepped down and rectified using a bridge rectifier.
- A voltage divider network (typically using 220kΩ resistors and a 10kΩ preset) drops the
rectified DC voltage (~10V) to a safe level.
- This reduced voltage is connected to Pin 1 (inverting input).
- Pin 2 (non-inverting input) is tied to the 5.1V reference from Pin 16.
- The internal error amplifier compares the voltages at Pin 1 and Pin 2.
- Any deviation from the reference (5.1V) causes the duty cycle of the PWM to adjust,
maintaining a consistent output voltage.

5. Reference Voltage and Monitoring Clarifications

- Pin 16 outputs a stable 5.1V reference voltage. This is used for accurate comparison at
Pin 2.
- The feedback network ensures real-time monitoring. Although a filter capacitor
smoothens the DC from the rectifier, variations in AC output (like spikes or drops) are
still reflected in the rectified signal, albeit proportionally.
- Thus, even with filtering, the feedback can detect abnormal output levels and respond
by modulating the switching duty cycle accordingly.

6. Conclusion
The SG3524 IC is integral in inverter systems due to its precise PWM control and inbuilt
feedback mechanism. By carefully setting the oscillator frequency and implementing a
real-time feedback loop, it ensures stable and regulated AC output. Understanding the
roles of each pin, particularly in the oscillator and feedback sections, is essential for
designing reliable inverter circuits.
