Sample Problem - Steel

The document presents a series of sample problems involving the calculation of weld lengths and capacities for various structural connections using A36 steel. It includes detailed calculations for double-angle truss members, fillet welds, and butt weld connections, considering factors such as tensile forces, shear stresses, and effective throat lengths. The solutions demonstrate the application of material properties and welding standards to determine the adequacy of welds in structural applications.

SAMPLE PROBLEM

A double-angle truss member shown in figure 3.11 consist of two angles 125mm x
88mm x 10mm thick with the 125mm side welded to a gusset plate. The member is to
carry a total tensile force of 848 kN. Using 6-mm fillet weld with E60 electrode,
determine the length of each side fillet weld required for balanced condition. All steels
are A36 with Fy = 250 MPa

Given:
Fu = 425 MPa (for E60 electrocode)
Fy = 250 MPa
P = 848 kN
t = 6 mm
y1 = 40 mm
y2 = 85 mm

Solution:
Allowable shear on effective area of weld:
Fv = 0.3Fu = 03(425)
Fv = 127.5 MPa
Allowable shear on based metal:
Fv = 0.4Fy = 0.4(250)
Fv = 100 MPa
Considering one member only:
P = = 424 kN
Length of weld on one side, L = L1 + L2

Based on weld metal shear:

P = 0.707 t L Fv
424 000 = 0.707 (6) (L) (127.5)
L = 784 mm

Based on metal shear:

Av = t L = 6L (contact area between the weld and metal)
P = A v Fv
424 000 = 6L (100)
L = 706 mm

Use L = 784 mm
For balanced condition:
L1 y1 = L 2 y2
L1 (40) = L2 (85)
L1 = 2.125 L2

L1 + L2 = L
2.125 L2 + L2 = 784
L2 = 250.88 mm
L1 = 533.12 mm
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A 100 X 100 X 10 mm angle is to be welded to a gusset plate as shown in Figure 3.12.
The angle carries a load of 185 kN applied along its centroidal axis. The maximum size
of fillet weld that can be used is 8 mm and the allowable shear stress of 94 MPa.
Determine the lengths of the side fillet welds if a traverse fillet weld is added at the end
of the angle.

Given:
P = 185 kN
L = 8 mm
Fv = 94 MPa
Solution:
P = Fv (0.707 t L)
185 000 = 94(0.707) (8) L
L = 348 mm

c = 29(2) = 58 mm

P1 + P2 + P3 = 185 kN
P2 = 94 [0.707 (8) (58)]
P2 = 30 837 N = 30.837 kN

∑MP3 = 0
P1 (100) = 185(29) – P2(29)
P1 (100) = 185(29) – 30.837(29)
P1 = 44.707 kN = 44 707 N

P1 = Fv (0.707 t L)
44 707 = 94[0.707(8)a]
a = 84 mm

∑MP1 = 0
P3 (100) = 185(71) – 30.837(71)
P3 = 109.456 kN = 109 456 N

P1 = Fv (0.707 t L)
109 456 = 94[0.707(8)b]
b = 206 mm

Check: L = 84 + 206 + 58 = 348mm (OK)

SAMPLE PROBLEM
Two plates 300 mm x 16 mm is to be connected using butt weld connections. Use A36
steel. Fy = 250 MPa Fu = 400 MPa and an electrodes E70 with Fu = 485 MPa.

Given:
Fy = 250 MPa
Fu = 400
Fu = 485 MPa (Electrodes E70)
a. Determine the capacity of the connection assuming the butt weld is adequate.
Use a reduction factor of 0.85 for the net area.

Solution:
Based on gross area:
T = 0.60 Fy Ag
T = 0.60 (250) (300) (16)
T = 720 000 N

Based on net area:

T = 0.5 Fu Ae
T = 0.5 (400) (0.85) (300) (16)
T = 816 000 N

Use T = 720 kN

b. Determine the capacity of the joint if single V-butt weld is used to connect them.
Effective length of throat (t) =
Effective length of throat:
t = 10 mm

T = t L (0.30) Fu
T = 10 (300) (0.3)(485)
T = 436 500 N
T = 436.5 kN

c. Determine the capacity of the joint if a double V-butt weld is used to connect
them.

Effective length of throat:

t = 16 mm

T = t L (0.30) Fu
T = 16(300)(0.3)(485)
T = 698 400 N
T = 698.4 kN
