Course Description
This course is intended to be a preparation for the calculus series for STEM students. Pre-Calculus
revolves around functions, their applications and related topics. The course actively engages
students in the exploration and discovery of mathematical concept individually as well as
collaboratively using formative assessment and technology in the learning process. The course
provides students with the necessary tools to perform operations on functions and their graphs, to
solve logarithmic, exponential and trigonometric equations and to graph polynomials, rational
functions and basic trigonometric functions. The course also provides real life applications of many
of the concepts encountered in the course

Quizzes: There are four quizzes and only three quizzes with the best marks will be taken. Each quiz
is equivalent to 5%. The quiz will be taken during or outside the class time. There will be NO makeup
quizzes under any circumstances. A medical certificate for a missed quiz will be accepted, but a
makeup quiz will not be given.

Exam 1: The first exam will take place on Saturday 8/10/2022 on paper for a duration of 75 minutes.
This exam is worth 15% of the course grade. The location, time, and content of the exam will be
announced one week prior to the exam.

Exam 2: The second exam will take place on Saturday 12/11/2022 on paper for a duration of 75
minutes. This exam is worth 15% of the course grade. The location, time, and content of the exam will
be announced one week prior to the exam.

Final Exam: The exam’s date, time, and location will be determined by QU-Scheduling Section.
The final exam will be on paper, and it will be a comprehensive exam for a duration of 120 minutes.
This exam is worth 35% of the course grade.

Online Homework: The online homework can be accessed in Pearson MyLabMath integrated into
Blackboard. There is online homework for each section. Students will have the right to do and repeat
the homework several times (5 times) until the due dates. The homework grade is equivalent to 8% of
the course grade. No homework will be re-opened after the deadline for any reason.

Learning Activity: The learning activity is equivalent to 6% of the course grade. It can be problem
sets, written assignments, lab activities, project(s), student participation in the class discussion, or a
combination of these activities that are aligned in QU Excellence Themes. It is evaluated using
detailed rubrics set by the instructor.

Lab 2: The Lab 2 is equivalent to 6% of the course grade. It consists of Lab worksheets delivered
once a week. It includes some lab tests in the semester by the teaching assistants.

Assessment Components & Weighting

 The course instructor may amend the assessment methods and weightings in the event that the
university changes the teaching style from distance teaching to regular teaching or vice-versa, and
in a manner that does not compromise the educational process or the students’ interest.
 ‫يجوز ألستاذ المقرر تعديل أساليب التقييم واألوزان في حال قامت الجامعة بتغيير نمط التدريس من‬

Policy and Procedures

General Classroom Behavior Protocol
The use of mobile telephones inside the classroom is NOT permitted, unless directed by the
teacher for a class activity. Any student disciplinary issues, which may arise, will be referred to
the head of the Math Department. Students may also receive a non-academic violation. After
9
the class instructor fills out the non-academic violation form, the form is sent to Vice President
for Student Affairs Office to be placed in the file of the student. Your course instructors will
give additional information on student classroom conduct to you.

Attendance Policy
Class participation and attendance are important elements of every student's learning
experience at QU, and the student is expected to attend all classes, as not doing so will affect
their mark for Task Completion. Keeping track of the student's attendance and observation of
the student's performance in class are the responsibilities of the instructor. A student should
not miss more than 25% of the classes during a semester. Those exceeding this limit will
receive a failing grade regardless of their performance. A student who misses more than 25%
of classes and has a valid excuse for being absent will be allowed to withdraw from the
course.

The following rules are applied in determining attendance of the students:

1.If a student attends only a part of a class, the instructor determines whether he/she is
considered present or absent for that day and whether he/she receives the mark for Task
Completion.
2.A student will be marked absent regardless whether they have a valid or non-valid excuse.
3.Attendance record begins on the first day of class irrespective of the period allotted to drop/add
and late registration.
4.If an instructor reschedules a class, the new timing must be suitable and agreed upon in writing
by all students; otherwise, instructors cannot hold a student responsible for not meeting the
attendance requirement.

Using calculators:
You may use a calculator during the semester in class, lab and in all quizzes and tests. It is
not mandatory to use a calculator. You may use any four-function or scientific calculator “it is
recommended to use the calculators of the type Casio fx-82 ES”. All graphing calculators
are prohibited. It is recommended to check with your teacher from the beginning of the
semester if your calculator is permitted or prohibited.

Cheating & Plagiarism:

Cheating is an academic violation according to Qatar University rules and regulations, and in
some cases, it may result in final dismissal from the University. Students should not under any
circumstances commit or participate in any cheating attempt or any act that violates student
code of conduct.

Student Complaints Policy

Students at Qatar University have the right to pursue complaints related to faculty, staff, and "
other students. The nature of the complaints may be either academic or non-academic. For
more information about the policy and processes related to this policy, you may refer to the
”.students’ handbook

10
Special Needs Policy
Aligned with Qatar University and the Foundation Program’s inclusive education policy, the
Foundation Program provides educational opportunities that include the provision of
accommodation and other resources to students with special needs. These resources include
one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to enhance the students’ abilities, so that they can
successfully meet the course requirements. The students are also afforded extracurricular
activities that maximize the opportunity for experiential learning, thereby promoting self-
advocacy and building confidence among students with special needs and disabilities.
Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact their instructor to ensure that their
individual needs are met. The Foundation Program, through its Student Affairs Special Needs
Committee, will make every effort to accommodate students according to their individual
needs.
