Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. - John 15:4
(NRSV)
Our faith begins at the point where atheists suppose it must be at an end. Our faith begins with the bleakness and power which is the night of the cross, abandonment, temptation and doubt about everything that exists! Our faith must be born where it is abandoned by all tangible reality; it must be born of nothingness, it must taste this nothingness and be given it to taste in a way that no philosophy of nihilism can imagine. - Hans-Joachim Iwand
A SERVICE OF WORSHIP
May 6, 2012 Fifth Sunday of Easter 10:55 a.m.
Louis Vierne
(1870-1937)
CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: All:
Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the evil man his thoughts; let him turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him, and to our God, for He will freely pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. Let us worship God!
Hymn to Joy
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Most gracious and forgiving God, our Father: You have promised mercy through Jesus Christ to all who repent and believe in Him. We confess that we have all missed the mark of keeping Your law and commandments. We hold envy toward others, and desire what our neighbors have. We speak hurtful words to those around us, even to those whom we love. We are quick to criticize others and fail to offer our guidance and assistance. Eagerly we take, but we are hesitant to give. We are surrounded by people in need yet we look in a different direction. We praise our church buildings and seek our own comfort instead of giving praise to Your love, grace and salvation. Our hearts are cold, Lord, for lack of the warmth of the Holy Spirit. Have mercy upon us merciful Father! In Jesus, Your Son, is our salvation; in Your promises is our hope. Help us to live in Your light, and walk in Your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heavn thereby, Nor yet because who love Thee not Must die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me upon the cross embrace; For me didst bear the nails and spear, And manifold disgrace; Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, Should I not love Thee well? Not for the hope of winning heavn Or of escaping hell; Not with the hope of gaining aught, Not seeking a reward; But as Thyself hast loved me, O ever-loving Lord! Een so I love Thee, and will love, And in Thy praise will sing; Solely because Thou art my God, And my Eternal King!
- Poem (anonymous), 17th century Latin tr. by Reverend Edward Caswall

Precious Lord
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
GLORIA PATRI 579 (Blue Hymnal) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. SACRAMENT OF THE LORDS SUPPER AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORDS PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was one of the most important French Romantic organists of his time. Vierne was an organ student of Csar Franck, who possessed perhaps the richest harmonic palette in Western music. Viernes music clearly reflects the influence of his teacher. His most important post was as organist at Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900-1937. He is best-known for his six organ symphonies and shorter free-style organ works. Viernes legacy also encompasses less well-known works for the organ, including an earlier work, Messe basse (1912). Communion from the Low Mass is a meditative prelude which was written for the Grand Orgue at Notre-Dame. Jane Marshalls anthem My Eternal King was composed in 1954. Church choral music at the time, having experienced no major changes for several years, was on a plateau. When this anthem came into print, it immediately changed the entire landscape of American sacred choral music. It was uniquely different. Based on a translation of a 17th-century Latin text, My Eternal King progresses from a serene introduction to a magnificent climax which seems to reach for the heavens. Carefully coupled to the text, the musicwith its colorful harmonics for the organhas, at times, utterly simple chords for the singer. Even with its old English text, My Eternal King remains a favorite in the repertoire of thousands of church choir directors and singers. Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was a leading Jewish composer who was born in Switzerland. Bloch is remembered for his orchestral, choral, and chamber music. He composed only ten works for the organ, including four wedding marches. Todays postlude is a stately wedding processional and by far the most popular of the four marches.
