Stop Online Piracy Act Essay

Written By: Arthur Ehrensperger

Imagine a world where just sharing a video on Facebook could land you in jail. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill is trying to put this bill into action as soon as possible; to live in a world where the internet was a large source of expressing creativity, and suddenly it all falls away before your very own eyes is unimaginable. The world of internet being monitored by SOPA searching and scanning 24/7 for pirated and copyrighted content that was either uploaded or downloaded by you. Most of the western society is against this Bill but even now the bill is still fighting for approval. A major way the bill will affect the internet is creativity, most works of creativity on the internet are in some way copyrighted and infringing on someones work of art, and this will limit the internet users on what they can and cant post onto the internet The way the internet will be affected by SOPA is that the creativity option will be limiting to the uploader. They will have to think twice before uploading their content onto the internet because if it is slightly infringing in any way to the original uploaders content it will automatically be removed and you will have to face legal copyright and piracy actions and law suits. The bill that was originally written by Lamar Smith a United States Congressman was intended the bill to make the internet a less infringing source of media, he was bribed many times by the entertainment industry to write and make the bill get passed in the United States of America so that the entertainment industries could make more profit off consumers and generate a larger revenue. SOPA has many sub groups, sopa originally stands for (Stop Online Piracy Acts) at first the bill was written to stop people from pirating content on and off the internet, as did the other bills such as: PIPA, CESPA, and REPA have all the same meaning behind them, but the bills are all worded differently to trick the government and congress to think that they are not the same and hope that one of them do get passed. All of these organizations are like subtopics of SOPA, so if one gets passed it is like having a mail man go through your mail before he even gives it to you and stamps the mail with a big stamp saying that I have gone through your mail. Except it is on the internet the most used source of media in western civilization today. Creativity will be limited because most of the time it could be similar to another work of creativity, so which ever content was posted first the second one gets blocked and removed. This is a major problem because a lot of the internet is creativity that is probably similar to another work of creativity. The War on SOPA is only the beginning; the United States of America is renowned for having countries follow it in its footsteps to achieve good economic and social growth in the western society. The Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (ECTIP) was the first bill to test the water, but seeing how they made the largest mistake in the history of law suit action. Mega Upload was taken down by ECTIP before it was even passed on January 17, 2012. The CEO of Mega Upload (Kimble Hans Schmitz) was living in New Zealand when an American task force was trooped out to New Zealand to Retrieve this man and

bring him to justice; the force was trooped onto New Zealand soil without a permit and still captured Kimble Schmitz and took him back to justice in America for owning the largest pirated torrent downloading site on the internet. They interrogated him and apparently the American task force was not permitted at the time to enter New Zealand soil and yet New Zealand had no law about pirating and downloading copyrighted content onto the internet, after spending a night in jail Kimble was released back to New Zealand and Mega Upload was launched back up shortly. The United States could not afford such embarrassments anymore so the ECTIP bill was shut down never to be heard of ever again and Mega upload is now never to be altered by government officials for infringing content or copyright content anywhere around the world anymore. Many people are protesting against this and other bills now they are trying to show that people as one may not have a loud voice but as a group our actions speak louder than words than the government. A group of social hackers called Anonymous are shutting down us government websites to show that they are not kidding around and will keep doing so until all of these bills are rejected. They are represented by a Guy Faux mask as the face of the civilians and the face of humanity. Anyone can be anonymous, I am anonymous, you are anonymous, my family is anonymous, and the world is Anonymous. People are beginning to take more action to the society and are begging to form a whole, a family, a unity between each other to fight off Stopping Online Piracy Acts all together. Large websites and search engines such as: Wikipedia, Google, Mozilla Firefox, and many more are protesting by shutting down until the bill was rejected or removed. Many of them have infringing content and links to infringing content. If they bill was passed the websites and search engines would all go bankrupt because they will be limited to what they will be allowed to have linked on their search options. It is the opinion of the English Wikipedia community that both of these bills, if passed, would be devastating to the free and open web, said a statement signed by three of the free encyclopedias administrators. They said the decision to shut down the English-language portion of the site, starting at midnight Eastern time, had been made after a virtual discussion that involved 1,800 users. And many other websites followed Wikipedias footsteps. The world of Internet is source of media that is better left untouched. The bills that are trying to follow sopa in its footsteps are not thinking rationally on how that makes them and the rest of their country look like, it makes them look ignorant to the world of media and the internet. The people who have tried to make this bill pass have all failed and will always fail, because the way the world works is the amount of power of a group of millions of people and internet media have against a small group of congressmen representatives. The amount of pressure of websites closing down and hackers hacking the homeland security of

the nation, it is very unlikely that anything would ever get passed under that amount of risk to even is some cases the security of the nation.
