The city, like most of the bursting cities in India, is mainly on the plains with a river dividing it into two. It has expanded itself to cover around 1500 sq. Km. It experiences a sub-tropical climate with around 6 months of rainfall and 9 solar hours daily. The city has a demand of 4300 million litres of water per day. Against it, supply is limited to 3000 million litres of water per day. With as much as 40% of water being lost due to leaking pipes many household go without water. The real cause of scarcity of water is not its non-availability rather its main causes are mismanagement of water supply systems, defective distribution, wastage of water due to leakage. Privatisation is a solution envisaged by many industrialists but it will make water unaffordable. Improvementin the present water supply could be achieved by enhancing the distribution network and water recycling treatment. Water harvesting is also an option. However, primary focus should be to develop an automated distribution and metering system for water supply that would reduce the theft losses and increase the distribution efficiency of water supply in the city. Design your own solution to the general problems, as mentioned above, the emerging cities are facing in water supply.
LEVEL 1
In this level participants will have to submit a report for being selected to LEVEL-2. The contents of the report should be a case-study on the city and designing a Smart Water Supply. The various sections of the report could be: ? Overview about what your Smart Water Supply (solution to the problems) is? ? Designing a Smart Water Supply for the city(graphical representation). ? The benefits of the Smart Water Supply that you have designed. ? will the modern system change the present scenario- a comparative study? How ? Financial Model of the putting up of such a system. ? Suggesting a method to implement the new water supply infrastructure you have designed. ? Conclusion ? References The last date of entry of the abstract of this report is February 15, 2011. The abstract will have to be sent in .pdf format to smartcities.cogni@gmail.com. In this abstract, the participant will have to send whatever they have prepared in the report till that day. It has to be a minimum of 3 A4 size pages in standard 11 font size. The participants short-listed from the received entries will be asked to come over to Roorkee during 11-13th March to participate in the event. The short-listed teams have to send in their complete reports for the next level by 5th March, 2011 failure of which can result in disqualification. For more tips and support for the report preparation, join the event google group.

LEVEL 2
11th March: Level 2 will involve competing with the Smart Water Supply designs of the other participants in front of a panel comprising of intellectuals from the Planning Commission Of India, leaders of Smart water Supply Organisations in India and highly-reputed researchers. The participants will be required to prepare a presentation on the basis of what they have sent in the report. The participants will be helped in preparing various simulations and data representation for the event. The winners will be given rewards at the end of this level.
LEVEL 3
After the 2nd level, the participants will be asked to team up with Smart Transport, Smart Grid, Smart Buildings designers and prepare an integrated report on the same having the contents of level-2 but incorporating the other verticals as well and thus presenting a complete design of the MODERN SMART CITY. For all this, they will be given 24 hours' time. They will need to submit a report by 5 pm 12th of March. Based on the latest integrated report they have submitted, they will have to prepare a presentation and present it to a panel of highly reputed jury members. The award will be given to the best integrated Smart City design team members and lots of consolation prizes will also be given. RULES AND REGULATIONS (IMPORTANT DATES) would be of maximum two members. could be an undergraduate or postgraduate or a research scholar or can be interdepartmental team(basically anyone who is enrolled in a university can participate) ? A participant can participate in any one of the verticals (Smart Grid/Smart Buildings/ Smart Water Supply/ Smart Transport) only. ? The team members would first have to register at the cognizance site and get a Cognizance ID. ? Then register for the event by sending a registration mail to smartcities.cogni@gmail.com by 10th February 2010. ? Subject of the registration mails would be SMART_CITY_yourvertical_yourteamname ? The registration mail should contain the names of the members, their college, their department, their age, and their COGNIZANCE ID, the vertical they have selected. ? the registration is confirmed, the participants can start working on the report and Once join the Google group for support and discussions/tips for the report.
