Management Information System

Management
Management is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively.

Management comprises

planning organizing staffing, leading or directing and controlling an organization

Planning
in organizations and public policy is both the organizational process of creating and maintaining a plan; and the psychological process of thinking about the activities required to create a desired goal on some scale.

Organizing
Anything is commonly considered organized when it looks like everything has a correct order or placement.

Leadership
has been described as a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.

Information
Consists of facts that have been analyzed by the process component and is an output of the information system.

System
A group of interdependent items that interact regularly to perform a task. In computer system, it refers to the hardware and software components that run a computer or computers.

Information Systems
Are designed to collect data, process the collected data, and deliver timely, relevant, and useful information that can be used for decision making.

Operational level
Monitor the elementary activities and transactions of the organization Principal purpose: To track specific transactions and answer routine questions at any given time Example: Tracking system of number of hours worked for employees

KNOWLEDGE-LEVEL SYSTEMS
Support knowledge and data workers Principal Purpose: Integration of new knowledge into the business and control of the flow of paperwork. Example: MSOffice Applications

MANAGEMENT-LEVEL SYSTEMS
Support the monitoring, controlling, decisionmaking, and administrative activities of middle managers. Principal Purpose: Provide historic, periodic information and support decision-making (what if scenarios) Example: Data Warehouse System comparing Actual vs. Target figures for production on a monthly basis

Support the long-range planning activities of senior management Principal Purpose: Assess the organization vs. environment Example: Systems that present what the firm will be like in 5 years

Types of Information System

Transaction Processing System(TPS)


Whenever two people make an exchange, it is called a transaction.
Transactions are important events for a company, and collecting data about them is called transaction processing.
Examples of transactions include making a purchase at a store, withdrawing money.

Types of Transactions
When a department orders office supplies from the purchasing department, an internal transaction occurs, when a customer places an order for a product, an external transaction occurs.
Internal Transactions: Those transactions, which are internal to the company and are related with the internal working of a ny organization. For example Recruitment Policy, Promotion Policy, Production policy etc External Transactions: Those transactions, which are external to the organization and are related with the external sources, are regarded as External Transaction. For example sales, purchase etc.

Characteristics of Transaction Processing Systems


1. A TPS records internal and external transactions for a company. It is a repository of data that is frequently accessed by other systems. 2. A TPS performs routine, repetitive tasks. It is mostly used by lower-level managers to make operational decisions 3. Transactions can be recorded in batch mode or online. In batch mode, the files are updated periodically; in online mode, each transaction is recorded as it occurs.

Sample of TPS

Jollibee's, which sells a large number of hamburgers every day, orders raw materials from its suppliers. Each time the company places an order with a supplier, a transaction occurs and a transaction system records relevant information, such as the supplier's name, address, and credit rating, the kind and quantity of items purchased, and the invoice amount.

Management information system (MIS)


Its a combination of both business and Information systems. MIS reports tend to be used by middle management and operational supervisors. is the study of people, technology, organizations and the relationships among them. MIS consist of files such as sales and expense data which will be conducted by based on TPS files

Decision support system(DSS)


is a computer-based information system that supports business or organizational decisionmaking activities. are computer program applications used by middle management to compile information from a wide range of sources to support problem solving and decision making.

Executive information system(EIS)


is a type of management information system intended to facilitate and support the information and decision-making needs of senior executives by providing easy access to both internal and external information relevant to meeting the strategic goals of the organization. It is commonly considered as a specialized form of decision support system (DSS). is a reporting tool that provides quick access to summarized reports coming from all company levels and departments such as accounting, human resources and operations.

Marketing information system


is a management information system designed to support marketing decision making. are MIS designed specifically for managing the marketing aspects of the business.

Office automation System


support communication and productivity in the enterprise by automating work flow. OAS may be implemented at any and all levels of management.

The backbone of office automation is a LAN, which allows users to transmit data, mail and even voice across the network.

Executive Support Systems(ESS)


is designed to help senior management make strategic decisions. It gathers, analyses and summarizes the key internal and external information used in the business. ESS meet the needs of corporate executives by providing them with vast amounts of information quickly and in graphical form to help them make effective decisions.ESS must be flexible, easy to use, and contain both internal and external sources of information.
