Mass Flowmeter
Also known as an inertial flow meter
is a device that measures mass flow
rate of a fluid through a tube.
Does not measure the volume per
unit time but it measure the mass
per unit time flow through the
device.
Coriolis Flowmeter
Coriolis flowmeter measure the force resulting from the acceleration caused by m
moving toward(or away from) a center of rotation.
The effect can be demonstrated by flowing water in a loop of flexible hose that is
back and forth in front of the body with both hands. Because the water is flowin
toward and away from the hands, opposite forces are generated and cause the
twist.
The swinging is generated by vibrating the tube in which the fluid flows.
Sensors and a Coriolis mass flowmeter transmitter are used to measure the twist
generate a linear flow signal.
Thermal flow meters use the thermal properties of the fluid to measure the flow o
fluid flowing in a pipe or duct.
n a typical thermal flow meter, a measured amount of heat is applied to the hea
the sensor. As flow increases, more heat is lost. The amount of heat lost is sens
temperature measurement(s) in the sensor.
The transmitter uses the heat input and temperature measurements to determin
flow. Most thermal flow meters are used to measure gas flows.
The amount of heat lost from the sensor is dependent upon the sensor design an
thermal properties of the fluid. The thermal properties of the fluid can and do va
pressure and temperature, however these variations are typically small in most
applications.
n these applications where the thermal properties of the fluid are known and rela
constant during actual operation, thermal flowmeters can be used to measure t
flow of the fluid because the thermal flow measurement is not dependent upon
pressure or temperature of the fluid.
rmal flowmeters are most commonly used to measure the mass flow of clean ga
ch as air, nitrogen, hydrogen, helium, ammonia, argon, and other industrial gase
xtures, such as flue stack flow and biogas flow, can be measured when their com
known.
advantage of this technology is its dependence upon thermal properties that are
dependent of gas density.
rmal flowmeters can be applied to clean, sanitary, and corrosive gases where the
operties of the fluid are known.
rmal flowmeters are most commonly applied to measure pure gases, such as wo
ed for laboratory experiments, and in semi-conductor production.
y can also used in chemical and petrochemical plants when the thermal properti
s are known.
ese are used in oil and gas, power, chemical, water and waste, metals and minin
od and beverage, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical and textile industries.
