Visual Effects
Visual effects are the various processes by which imag
ery is created and/or manipulated outside the context o
f alive action shot.
Visual effects involve the integration oflive-actionfoota
ge and generated imagery to create environments whic
h look realistic which is impossible to capture on film.
Visual effects usingcomputer generated imageryhas re
cently become accessible to the independent filmmaker
with the introduction of affordable and user friendlyani
mationandcompositingsoftware.
VFX can be categorize into : Compositing,Matte Paintin
g,Animation,Lighting,Texture,Rigging.
Rotoscoping
Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which animat
ors trace over live-action film movement, frame by fram
e, for use in animated films.
Originally, pre-recorded live-action film images were pr
ojected onto a frosted glass panel and re-drawn by an a
nimator.
This projection equipment is called a rotoscope, althoug
h this device has been replaced by computers in recent
years. In the visual effects industry, the term rotoscopin
g refers to the technique of manually creating a matte f
or an element on a live-action plate so it may be compo
sited over another background.
Rotoscoping
Compositing
It is the combining of visual elements from separate so
urces into single image, often to create the illusion that
all those elements are parts of the same scene
Compositing is taking real-life elements with Computer
Generated (CG) Element and putting them together - so
they seem like they were shot together.
Live-actionshooting for compositing is variously called
"chroma key", "blue screen", "green screen" and other
names. Today, most, though not all, compositing is achi
eved throughdigital imagemanipulation.

Matte Painting
Amatte paintingis a painted representation of a landsc
ape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to cr
eate the illusion of an environment that is nonexistent i
n real life or would otherwise be too expensive or impo
ssible to build or visit.
Historically, matte painters and film technicians have us
ed various techniques to combine a matte-painted imag
e with live-action footage. At its best, depending on the
skill levels of the artists and technicians, the effect is "se
amless" and creates environments that would otherwis
e be impossible to film.
In the scenes the painting part is static and movements
are integrated on it.
Matte Painting
Rigging
Skeletal animationis a technique incomputer animation
in which a character is represented in two parts: a surfac
e representation used to draw the character (calledskin
ormesh) and a hierarchical set of interconnected bones
(called theskeletonorrig) used to animate the mesh.W
hile this technique is often used to animate humans or m
ore generally for organic modeling.
This technique is used in virtually all animation systems
where simplified user interfaces allows animators to con
trol often complex algorithms .However, the intention of
the technique is never to imitate real anatomy or physica
l processes, but only to control the deformation of the m
esh data.
Rigging
Motion Capturing
Motion capture (MOCAP) is an effective 3D animation to
ol for realistically capturing human motion .
Incinematography,match movingis acinematic techn
iquethat allows the insertion of computer graphics into
live-actionfootage with correct position, scale, orientati
on, and motion relative to the photographed objects in t
he shot.
The term is used loosely to describe several different m
ethods of extracting cameramotioninformation from a
motion picture. Sometimes referred to asmotion track
ingorcamera solving, match moving is related toroto
scopingandphotogrammetry.
