OF THE

NINOY AQUINO
INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT
TERMINAL

What is an
Airport?
An airport is a gateway to a country. It is
the first and last impression the local
travellers and foreign visitors get. As a
transport terminal of passengers and freight,
an airport plays a vital role in social and
economic life and in the quality of human
experience.
But technically, An airport is a

HISTORY
The original airport that served Manila, Grace Park Airfield, also
known as Manila North, was opened in 1935 in Grace
Park,Caloocan.
It was the city's first commercial airport, and was used by
Philippine Aerial Taxi Company for its first domestic routes.
In July 1937, Manila International Air Terminal located in the 42
hectares (4,500,000sqft)Nelson Airportwas inaugurated and had
served as the gateway to Manila.
Its runways of which now formAyala Avenueand Paseo de
Roxasin Makati.
In 1948, following Philippine independence, the airport was moved
to its current site adjacent to the Villamor Airbase, which was then
calledNichols Fielddue to the reasons of less terrain slope,
expansive land area in the new site, and the USAF base runway
(Runway 13/31) which can be used for the airport.
The original structure was built on what is now the site of Terminal
2.

Project Concept:

Embracing our
ethnicity and culture
with Filipino pride &
hospitality

Problem:
Filipinos are known worldwide for our
undeniable talent and creativity, hospitality,
colourful culture and heritage but the latter
part was slowly being neglected.
The Airport is the first and last place that
we step into when we visit a country. Our
airport was dubbed as one of the worst
airports in the world, How ironic is it that we
are known for our hospitality but our
Airports, who welcome the travellers and
people from other countries, arent really
that welcoming? The poor services and
overall performance of the building reflects

Solution:

The idea is to redevelop the NAIA terminal 1

as an Airport that will showcase the cultural
heritage of the Philippines, upon stepping
foot in the country, thy will already see
glimpses of what thee different regions in
our country can offer, they will see the
different aspects of our nations culture.
The use of vernacular materials, and arts as
an inspiration for the interior of the terminal
to boost the Filipino Pride.

DESIGN CONCEPT
The Magellan Bird Wing
TROIDES MAGELLANES

The Magellan Birdwing is a large and

striking butterfly found within the Philippines
The butterfly is named for the explorer
Ferdinand Magellan who was killed in
Philippines in 1521.
HABITAT AND RANGE
Magellan birdwing butterflies can be found all across the
Philippines archipelago. In fact, amongst the largest in the
world. Theyre happy to live in any areas where plants in
the aristolochiacese family exist, which often is forested
areas. You can see them in their natural habitats active
between March and April, September and October.

Conceptual
Development
The design originated
from a Butterfly, and
evolved into the shape
of the terminal building

DESIGN

OBJECTIVES

To improve the flow and use of each function of the spaces at

its best. Not only for the passengers and travellers but also for
the staffs and utility so they could provide better maintenance
for the terminal.
Improve the image of the Philippines through means of high
lighting the grounds for Filipino culture and tropical context of
the design providing our countrys gateway with the technology.
Improve the quality of travel services that we provide to
passengers whether they are foreign travellers or OFWs;
seeing a nice environment and better ambiance will lessen the
stress level that they will experience with travelling. So giving a
better terminal will attract more tourists and better feedback for
the airport.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
To do Filipino, I must
know my country; and I
have to believe in what
my country can offer.
This process of creation
must strive to express
who
we are and define our
unique place in this
world.

Floors
Granite Tiles are used for
the floorings of the terminal
for better maintenance
ease.

Factors to consider in choosing a

flooring

A uniquely appealing selection that contributes to the

overall vibrancy and positivity of the space, attracting
more business
The ability to withstand intense, high-traffic situations,
while demonstrating excellent abrasion- and wearresistance
The strength to handle high compression, including
heavily loaded baggage carts and wheeled luggage
Slip-resistance thats adjustable to specific facility
needs, balanced with easy-to-clean finish
Impressively simple and low-cost maintenance, with no
waxing or buffing required
Outstanding durability and long-term value
Hybrid flooring that custom-combines two or more
polymer resin chemistries in a single floor, providing the
optimal high performance solution for a given
application

Walls and Windows

Steel framing and Glass
Faade systems comprise the structural elements that
provide lateral and vertical resistance towindand
other actions, and the building envelope elements that
provide the weather resistance and thermal, acousticand
fire resistingproperties. The types of faade system that
are used depends on the type and scale of the building and
on local planning requirements that may affect the
buildings appearance in relation to its neighbours. For
example, brickwork is often specified as the external faade
material, but the modern way of constructing the inner leaf
consists oflight steel wallelements (called infill walling)
that have effectively replaced more traditionalblock-work.

Roof
CUSTOM PREFABRICATED
Every Duro-Last project is prefabricated to fit every
airport roof precisely. By performing 80-85% of
membrane seaming in our controlled factory
environment, Duro-Last reduces the potential for
rooftop installation errors and leaks that can occur
with other systems. Also, custom fabricated stacks
and curb flashings eliminate nearly 100% of rooftop
labor from the most critical roof areas - transitions
and changes of plane. The Duro-Last roofing system
is perfect for any new or retrofit project, on airports
with flat roofs or low-sloped roofs.
