The first step in this direction was taken by the

Founder himself with the establishment of the JN
Tata Endowment Scholarship in 1892
The Lady Meherbai D Tata scholarships,
established in 1932
The Indian Institute of Science was set up in
Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in 1909
The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)
In the 1920s the Dorabji Tata Graduate School of
Social Work was set up, which was renamed the
Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 11944.

Jaguar Land Rover is engaging with students to
create a new approach to learning
The company has invested in five Educational
Business Partnership Centres (EBPCs) for
schoolchildren
The EBPCs provide learning facilities and resources
for primary schoolchildren to children aged 16+ to
learn about engineering, manufacturing and
automotive business-related activities.
The program gives the children the hands-on

opportunity to work with equipment that
actually manufactures the vehicles. That
generates much enthusiasm, says Les Ratcliffe,
head of community relations at JLR.
Enabling Education (South

Africa)
The Tata Africa Scholarships have helped a growing
number of deserving students to take up higher
studies.
Tata Scholarships Program by
Tata
Africa Holdings provides
scholarships to deserving and
economically challenged
students.
The scholarships pay for their
university fees, accommodation
and
expenditure on books and
research
The program has benefited 137 students, from

disciplines
such as engineering, mining, nursing, pharmacy, law,
architecture and many more. Scholarships worth 8
million
have so far been awarded.
Tackling Learning
Disabilities
Tata Interactive Systems has adopted the cause of
children with learning disabilities
In 2002, Tata Interactive Systems (TIS)
took up
support of the LD community as part of its
corporate sustainability program,
supporting
various means to ensure that students with
LD
get their rightful place in the educational
system
and rediscover the joys of learning.
The company established the annual Tata
Learning Disability Forum (TLDF), the first
platform in India for creating awareness
Brain Teasers,a handy remedial activity book for students

diagnosed with dyslexia, was developed entirely through
the voluntary effort of TIS instructional designers, writers
and visual artists and published in 2006.
TIS was the only company to be awarded the Readers
Digest Pegasus Award for Contribution to Society
Imparting Education for two consecutive years, in 2007
and 2008
Encouraging The Reading

Setting up Libraries
In China, Tata has teamed up with The Library Project
to establish libraries with local language children's
books in rural schools.
Since February 2011, the Tata Sons
Beijing
office, along with a few Tata
companies in
China, has been supporting The
Library
Project Started in 2006 by Tom
Stader.
The first initiative saw Tata Sons
Beijing
office and Tata Consultancy Services
(TCS)
The Tata Sons Beijing office and

TCS Beijing also jointly donated a
library to Sanying Primary School,
in Luanping county, Hebei
province.
Tata volunteers donated over 600
books, but also pens, rulers, toys,
desks, chairs and bookshelves.
They assembled bookshelves and
desks, categorized the books, and
made a completely functional
reading room with their own
hands.
Awards And Recognitions

TATA Steel bagged CNBC Asias prestigious
Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the
companys outstanding CSR model.
The TATA group was awarded the Carnegie
Medal of Philanthropy in 2007 in recognition of
its long history of philanthropic activities.
The Golden Peacock Award (2004) was
bagged by TATA Motors for its excellent
contribution towards social and sustainable
development.
TISCO was awarded The Energy Research
Institute (TERT) award for its work under CSR
(2002-03).
Conclusion
Ratan Tata says his company is
not driven to grow over
everybody's dead bodies.
Some 66% of the profits of its
investments arm, Tata Sons, go to
charity, and executives make
clear they have no intention of
relinquishing control to Wall
Street.
At Tata, "Corporate Social
Responsibility", to use the
Western buzzword, has real
money behind it.
