The 2012 film Argo is based on the true story of how CIA operative Tony Mendez rescued six US diplomats from Tehran, Iran during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. Mendez devised an elaborate plan to have the diplomats pose as a Canadian film crew scouting locations in order to safely escort them out of the country. While praised as an entertaining film, it has also been criticized for inaccurately portraying events and minimizing the role of the Canadian embassy in the actual rescue mission.

Controversy
Although praised as a film it has also
been criticised for inaccuracies, in
particular minimizing the role of the
Canadian Embassy in the rescue and
for falsely showing that the
Americans were turned away by the
British and New Zealand embassies
and for exaggerating the danger the
group faced during the events
leading up to their escape
