Advertising Copy

What is an Advertising Copy?


An advertising copy is the written or spoken matter of
the message including Headlines, sub-headings,
illustrations, the advertisers name, address, etc. aimed
at conveying some desired message to the target
audience .The attainment of advertising objectives
largely depends on the way the advertising copy is
designed.
An advertising copy should :
-Include the merits and methods of use of product
-Draw the attention of target customers
-Persuade the buyers to purchase the product
-Develop the image of the product/advertiser

Main components of an
advertising copy
1. Headline: It refers to words which are in heading
position of an advertisement. They convey the main
message, get attention, and communicate the concept.
. Purpose of Headline:
-To attract attention of the customers
-To highlight the main features of the product
-To give main message of advertisement in brief
-To arouse interest for reading the advertisement copy

How can we help our headline grab attention?


Contrast your headline should contrast with other text on the page
to clearly show its different
Display typeface unlike text type, display type is created to attract
attention.
Size headlines should generally be larger than surrounding text to
show
their importance and set them apart. Make them the largest text on the
page.
Weight similarly headlines should be bold further increasing their
visual weight and their showing importance
Space by providing ample space around your headlines you help
increase its visual weight on the page
Asymmetry moving headlines out of alignment with yourown style
can help draw attention to them
Flow have other visual elements lead the eye to your headline

2. Sub-Headline: After the headline comes the subheadlines. These help the readers to have more
knowledge about the products.
Purpose of sub-headline:
-To gain attention and interest of readers
-These direct the interest of customers to main
points.

3. Illustrations or Pictures: These consists of


photographs, charts, paintings, drawings,
graphs and other pictorial devices.
Purpose of Illustrations:
-To attract the attention of the
readers
-To secure the interest of the
reader
Example:
-Picture of the product in use
-A close up picture of the
product

4. Text or Body: It forms the body of the


advertisement. It explains logically and
rationally the product attributes, features and
product values.
Purpose of text or body:
-It stimulates liking or preference for a product.
Example:
-The text or body of advertisement contains
facts and figures about the product, guarantees
of satisfactory performance.

5. Slogans: It as a catchy sentence or phrase


which is easy to remember and regularly used
by the advertisers to impress upon the readers.
Purpose of slogan:
-To attract and hold the attention of the reader
Example:
Some slogans use advertisers name.
-Always use Tatas products
Some slogans associate the brand name with the readers.
-Kelvinator is the coolest one

6. Identification Mark : It is the advertisers name,


brand name or trade-mark or identification mark.
Every producer or trade has its own trade name or
brand name which is used in advertising copy.
Purpose of Identification mark:
-The trade-name gives distinction and
individuality to the product and helps the
consumers to remember it.
Example:
-Bata Shoes
-Parker Pens

7. Closing Idea : An advertisement copy should be


closed with enough information, direction for the
customer to act.

Purpose of closing Idea:


-To persuade the customers to purchase
the products.

Example:
- Buy now
- Visit today our dealer
- Announcement of festive discount
