The Strathmore Handi-bus Association is doing better than ever in the last couple of years.
Despite the rumour coming out of Calgary
about their Handi-bus programs being taken
over by Calgary Transit, the Strathmore Handibuses have never been or are in no way affiliated with the city program and will continue
to run as they always have.
Were operated with the support of the
Town of Strathmore and the County of Wheatland and local donors, said Brian Grier, with
the Handi-bus Association.
The mandate of the association is to provide transportation services for seniors and
physically challenged (people) in the Town of
Strathmore and the County of Wheatland.
The members meet every month, except in
the summer, and have representatives from
the town, county and various organizations
around town, who are all strong supporters.
Grier related that the accountant for the association said in the last few months the financial position is the strongest he has ever seen.
Our buses are getting old, so we do need to
buy new buses. We do have money we have
just purchased one recently, said Grier.
We think were going to buy another one
this year, but were going to be prudent about
it. Well buy one this year and maybe well buy
one next year. We would like to get support
and were willing to give recognition.
The idea is if a person or company donates
approximately $25,000 or more to the association, their name would be placed on the exterior of the bus in recognition of their donation.
The $25,000 is about half of the cost of one
Handi-bus.
The associations bigger bus is about 15
years old and has a few issues. The association
hopes to maybe replace it at some point, but
it is more expensive to do so than the smaller
buses.
Grier hopes one day the Handi-bus Association will be self-sustaining.
Thats my goal. I want to operate without
donations I think thats a good goal for the
board to look at and thats one of the things
were looking at in our strategic plan and
working on, said Grier.
In 2014 there were 5,963 trips, which works
out to around 500 people per month. So far
the numbers are on track to see the same usage in 2015.

5 for Life held a Celebrate Your Child fair on May 9 at Wheatland Elementary. It was a great
way for kids and adults to interact with one another. They participated in physical health and
well-being activities, communication skill building, ways to control emotions and develop
literacy.

Wastewater utility project still waiting approval

Wheatland County invited residents
of Lyalta and surrounding area to an
open house regarding the proposed
wastewater utility project.
Homesteads Development, Wheatland County councillors and staff were
present to answer any questions that
residents may have had about the construction of the utility lagoon for wastewater management.
Homesteads Development and the
county are essentially playing the waiting game, until some details are finalized, at which time the public will
know more.
Were waiting for subdivision approval at this point and thats what
were dealing with right now, said Bill
Maher of Homesteads Development.
Weve been doing this for five years,
our project, the sewer problem came
up last year and Muirfield approached
us to ask us how we were dealing with
the sewer. Thats how this all developed. We said, well we might as well
work together on this because we need
one solution for Lyalta.
We needed water and they had a water treatment plant and we came into
an agreement. Well do the sewer and
theyll do the water. Were trying to get
it in place as soon as we can, because
Muirfield has an issue that theyre dealing with.
He admits that the project has been
slow to get going, but now the construction has been steadily improving.
From the beginning until now, weve
had a recessive slow down. Theyre
saying that there is a slowdown now
and those have a big effect on moving forward with the project, said Maher. Muirfield was underway and you
saw their lots theres a fair number
of lots sitting there but they have residents, so when they approached us we
said were not really ready for another year. But well move forward if we
work together.
Homesteads Development, in conjunction with Muirfield, believe they
have a solution in place to help the
sewage problem.
We have a treatment process in
place to take the sewage from Muirfield and the Homesteads and treat it
up at that lagoon site, that is the answer
and nobody else came forward with a
solution to Muirfield, said Maher. We
had to come up with a solution for our
own project and thats when we talked
to Cattleland. Weve come up with this
process thats a win for them because
they need water for their fields and a
win for us because we needed a place
to build a lagoon. Muirfield got tied
into that because they needed a solution to come into Wheatland because
their sewage treatment with the adjacent county was coming to an end.
The Homesteads Development are
patiently waiting for the go ahead from
Alberta Environment on the project.
Councillor Alice Booth offered her
take on the project.
The county cant do anything until
this is passed through Environment.
This is a new project thats never been
done anywhere, said Booth.
Until Environment is satisfied of
what this projects going to be, how
that effluent is going to be handled and
all of that. Really theres nothing the

The University of Calgarys Solar Car
team visited Strathmore schools on May
6.
The team spent the day chatting with
students while showing off one of their
solar cars, the Schulich Delta.
The visit was part of their community outreach program with the goal of
engaging in community awareness and

encouraging sustainability. The hope
of the program is to educate students
about renewable energy and inspire
them.
It is to push innovation into school
and encourage scientific spirit, said
team member and Strathmore High
School alumni Jonah Zankl.
He has been part of the team for two
years and manages the business side of

Changes are being promised for this
years Strathmore Heritage Days and
Stampede, many of which the new General Manager Herb McLane is sure will
make the experience more inviting to
those attending.
Lots of folks dont understand what
the agricultural society is about, said
McLane.
The community has really grown
over the last several years and theres
an urban dynamic here that doesnt necessarily know what the Ag does, or the
impact they make on a community, and
all the good deeds that are done. So we
want to ensure that that happens, that
we extend more information out there.
This is why a communications specialist has been hired to help get the word
out, by coordinating with media and informing them about upcoming events
happening at the Ag Park.
Brad (Walls) and the board have
asked me not only to focus on signature
events like the rodeo, but also to ensure that we have year round programming to more fully utilize the resources
that we have in terms of the facility, the
park, said McLane.
McLane prefers the word park for the
Ag grounds, because the goal is to have
it as a park, for it to be a destination
for local people and those far away. He
wants it to be a comfortable place for
people to use, whether they are camping, using the ball diamonds or the other facilities the Ag has available.
One new event coming to the Ag
Society is the first annual Strathmore
Heritage Days and Stampede Golf Tournament, being held June 12 at the Strathmore Golf Club.

The team, which consists of University
of Calgary students from all programs,
has been building cars since 2004 in response to the North American solar car
challenge that ended in Calgary. The cars
are completely student run so all the
design, sponsorship, fundraising building and driving is done by the Universitys students. According to the teams
website, the Schulich Delta was built
in 2012/2013 and took eight months to
design, three months to mold and three
months to build.

only be about six weeks away from the
golf tournament date, said McLane.
We want local participation, its open
to anyone.
Something else that is new to the Ag
this year is a rock concert. The name of
the performer is still under wraps for
now, but the concert will take place on
the Friday night of the rodeo. Saturday
will still have the cabaret with TC and
Company.
We have been focused on some
events that we think will help create
awareness but also internally, weve
been reviewing essentially all aspects of
our business model; how we do things,
how we create revenue, our expense
portfolio, our expense items, and seeing where we can make some changes
that make sense that make the operation a little more efficient and also drive
some revenue, said McLane.
Were thinking about some events in
the park sponsored by us, or co-sponsored by us, because I am a great believer in alliances and partnerships. We plan
for community involvement, upping our
game in agriculture, particularly in food
and beverage, and products and experiences around that.
McLane has had international experience that he thinks could be brought to
Strathmore and adapted here in a successful way.

10-minute rule.

10-minute rule in terms of safety codes
for buildings.

would be envisioned as the distance
between building a wall and a midway

point to another building, said Baron.

Its based on a mirror image principle,
so the identical building to the identical
building. It turns into a more scientific
approach based on criteria: whats the
use and occupancy of a building, whats
the nature of its construction, whats the
height and length of the wall by how
many openings are in it.
The approach is essentially based
on the fire protection surrounding the
building.
The building code also says where
the fire department takes more than 10
minutes to respond to get there, which
in itself is a whole other set of calculations, because when a call does come in,
when does the clock start, said Baron.
The way the code looks at it is when
you exceed the 10 minutes that limiting
distance now doubles.
Baron cautioned that there is no way
of really solving the 10-minute issue.
So theres not a particular straight
answer to the 10-minute issue because
of all of these other factors that need to
come into consideration. So within that
changes to the construction types and
techniques, said Baron. For example if
you were to put in a standard 2X6 wall
and you had to put some exterior grade
x-rated drywall (up), then you have fire
proofing on the outside, you change the
characteristics of the performance of
that wall, which invariably changes that
distance to the midway distance of that
wall.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk admits this
will be a complex formula that will not
be implemented over night.
This already complex to me anyway,
said Grajczyk. I dont know about the
rest of council, but I need a Reader Di-
gest version of all these numbers and

everything else cant be done in one
evening.
Grajczyk had asked Baron about how
another fire hall could mitigate some issues. You can build as many fire halls
as a community grows, said Baron, but
youre never going to get caught up to it
because its always the type of construction and the use of not building it that
drive the expectation of performance.
Baron offered his answer to Councillor Bob Sobols question whether the
builders costs adhere to the law and is
it in reach.
Its always within reach, I dont know
what normal (cost) would be. I do know
a normal here is going to be different
than a normal in the City of Calgary,
where they start getting into the one
million dollar envelope on housing,
said Baron.
I dont expect youve got that here.
If your builders in your community are
big on steel studs for example I had

that blip happen when I was in the field
and I had builders come through and
all of sudden theyre big on steel studs,
building houses on steel studs. It can be
done.
Baron added that the costs are not astronomical to do this project.
Deputy Mayor Rocky Blokland thought
Barons information was of value.
Im getting a lot of information
here tonight thats certainly starting to
straighten things out. I like the possibility of more fire halls not being the answer, said Blokland. One of the best
things weve got going in Strathmore is
our volunteer fire department and kudos to them, weve got a great fire service in this town. I stress the word volunteer because I firmly believe we can
have three fire halls in town, but as long
as were strictly volunteer to get to those
10 minute response times can be pretty
difficult.

Brentwood choir sings to a silver finish

The Brentwood Choir had a very respectable
second place finish at provincials in Edmonton on
May 8.
The schools musical specialists, Carolynn
Steeves, could not be any more proud of her group
accomplishment.
What its called is the Alberta Musical Festival
Associations Provincial Coral Finals and we were
competing in a Grade 4-6 choir class, representing
Drumheller Festival because thats who nominated
us and we ended up tied for second place, said
Steeves.
I think they worked hard all year, they really
wanted to go to provincials and when they got
there, were here, lets do it and they sang very well.
They got a superior rating and a mark of 92, an
awesome result all the way around, said Steeves.
We got a placement and to the kids thats very
special.
For being such big group, the team was praised
for their dedication to teamwork.
The kids were actually complemented from the
adjudicator on their total commitment to the group
and great part singing, said Steeves.
She admits that there was no special technique

Drumheller and District Music Festival. The event was held in McDougall United Church in Edmonton. There were 13 Grade 4-6
choirs in their class representing various music festivals in Alberta and the Brentwood Senior Choir placed second with a superior
rating and an amazing mark of 92.

County extends fencing agreement

Wheatland County extended their fencing agreement with DENICO through 2016.
DENICO has served the county well for three
years and were recommended to come back for
another term by staff.
Their agreement was from 2012 to 2014 and
there was a possibility for an extension, so their
fees were fixed for those three years. With the new
rates, theyll be fixed for the next two years, said
Alan Parkin, Wheatland Countys Chief Administrative Officer.
In 2017, well have to go out for a new tender
because we wont be able to extend it again. DENICO can apply again but might not be successful.
Parkin added that the rate increase is in the eight
to 10 per cent range because of the materials that
will be needed by the company.
Most of the materials have gone up in the last
three years. The labour costs have been the same,
like they have always been. Different things went
up different amounts, said Parkin.
VALLEY BUS FUNDING
Reeve Koester received letter back from the Valley Bus Society in regards to their future plans for
aging buses. The two-year fundraising plan will
include replacing the aging vehicles to buy newer ones, without the existing stairs or wheelchair
lifts, as it is matter of them being a hazard and too
expensive. The campaign will also include buying

vans instead of buses, as they are easier to move
around and it helps with controlled costs. The costs
for a fully equipped van will be $75,000. The report also indicated that the Valley Bus Association
is looking for a donation.
HELIPAD EXPANSION
Deputy Reeve Ben Armstrong had an update on
the expansion of the Strathmore Hospital Helipad,
Wheatland Regional Water Partnership (WRWP)
project and Transfer Site Agreements the county
has with small villages. He mentioned that there is
an updated provincial direction through the rural
health services review. The WRWP project is hoping for an updated application on the scope of the
$9 million expense for the pipeline. There is a hope
of renegotiating an agreement with the villages, for
shared costs of maintaining transfer sites for garbage disposals.
CAO REPORT
Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin provided an update on his activities for the county.
He mentioned in his report that on April, 19 staff
members attended the Leadership for Safety Excellence Course and WHIMIS courses. He also reported that the 2014 school information was provided,
indicating upgrades for the schools. Central Bow
Valley used $2.4 million, $2.1 million went to Standard, $1 million used for Hussar and $0.4 million
went to Rockyford.

they used but the kids just went and sang quality music.
We presented our materials like everybody else and the adjudicator liked the quality of our music and we were rewarded
for that, said Steeves.
The choirs will end the year off with the singing of Oh
Canada at Canada Day festivities and at the opening ceremonies of the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games.
Steeves would like to acknowledge the piano accompanist
Kathie Zakresky for her commitment and job well done with
the group.

message of Jesus Christ - His life,

how Pastor Dawn from Lord of All
Lutheran Church organized the
annual Strathmore and District ministerial Good Friday Service this year.
She included all of the clergy from
various churches who were able to
be present. What struck me was the
rallying of us as Christian leaders
around the Person of Jesus Christ
and the events from Scripture that
happened around the time of Jesus
Crucifixion. Each church individually
celebrated on Easter Sunday the
resurrection of our Lord.A whole
weekend centered around our Savior
- as should be all our days. The prime
emphasis of the Christian Church is
and always must be the person of
Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and
Coming King!
It is apparent that we are, as a
society here in Canada, losing our
freedoms and privileges to promote
Jesus publicly. The Supreme Court of
Canada ruled that it is not lawful to
have public prayer in our Parliament
and Councils of cities and towns. The
very foundation of our country was
built on the Word of God and these
privileges of prayer too. This ought

Eddy Dostaler, known as Fast Eddy, ran through
town on April 23, on the first part of his solo and
unsupported round trip running trek across Canada.
Dostaler, 26, started his run on March 1. His
There and Back run began in Victoria, B.C. and
will run to Conception Harbour,
N.L., before turning around and
heading back to B.C. Manned with
only whats essentially a jogging
stroller, he filled it with everything
he needs.
No one to date has ever completed there and back, said Dostaler. On average it takes someone
7,300 km to get across Canada. It
can take a little bit under, but thats
the average. Its taking me just one
way around 10,000 kilometres.
The idea began when he did a
research paper on Terry Fox when
he was 15. He found Foxs run to
be such a selfless act that it resonated with him and he decided
one day run across Canada for Alzheimers.
I picked Alzheimers right then
and there because it not only affects the person being diagnosed,
but it really hard-hits the family,
said Dostaler.
As with many people, life began
to become busier and his lofty goal moved to the
backburner. It was when his grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimers two years ago that he
knew it was time to hit the pavement. He called
the Alzheimers Society and told them he would
run one way for them, and jumped in with two
feet.
Three months into the planning he went to tell
one of his professors about it and found out the
professor had passed away. The professor had
always told Dostaler that one day he should do
something for breast cancer research and awareness.
With a new plan Dostaler changed the scope of
his run and changed from being supported on the
run, to heading out solo. He is now running for
both causes.
Fundraising hasnt been as good as he had
hoped, but being a man of his word, he set out

on March 1.
The biggest hazard I have is people texting and
driving. They just dont pay attention, said Dostaler.
Someone reading and responding to even a
quick text, driving at 400 to 600 metres and 100
km an hour, could drive past and not even notice
him.
If you have your wheel turned
slightly to the right, youre going
to hit me and I cant really get out
of the way.
Something that does encourage
him on his daily runs is when people honk as they drive by.
A honk can go a long, long
way. It definitely does make your
day. The more and more people
who stop, the more cheerful I am.
It makes someones day to have
someone notice what youre doing
and youre not doing it in vain,
said Dostaler.
There are days that are tough, but
he has never wanted to quit, stating that every time he gets tired,
and maybe a little discouraged, he
remembers why he is running.
Why? One in nine women are
affected with breast cancer. One in
three people know someone with
Alzheimers. This has worked in
the past and it has created huge
foundations, where its in 47 different countries for the Terry Fox run, said Dostaler.
You may not personally be living with the illnesses, but thats what kind of makes you a little
bit different in that sense. Its a selfless act in the
sense that theres no real personal gain for me.
A random act of kindness can create an endless
ripple. I would much rather do something with
my life than sit idly by wishing something had
been done. If youre waiting for that perfect time,
that perfect moment, its never going to happen.
You have to sit there and you have to create that
perfect time that perfect moment and build on it.
In addition to running through each province,
zigzagging along the way to hit major cities, Dostaler will also be hosting 10, 24-hour-long runs in
each province to raise awareness. To find out how

Healing the body, then the soul

The Harvest Healing Centre wants to support
the community any way they can, focusing on
helping people in a practical sense first, and then
possibly helping them spiritually.
This vision for us is a little bit different in the
building was built for community, a practical
building. Most churches dont have a shop, its not
a really fancy stained-glass-window-type church,
and in here we deal with a lot of different people,
addicts, people like that come in and out through
here as well, said Pastor Elizabeth Karp.
The key, for me anyway, is the people I run
across they dont have a lot, they dont have a lot
of funds and initially the churchs mandate is to
look after people practically and then look after
them spiritually, so the one kind of leads into the
other.
Our mission statement here is REAL, relational, excellent, accepting and life-giving, and thats
what were striving to be in the community, whatever that looks like.
There are clothes for people in need, there are
programs offered for the youth, including learning more about being a mechanic, and theres the
free bread that is given away a couple nights a
week.
Eventually the members of the church would
like to offer a soup kitchen; there have been generous donations for the kitchen so it has been
set up with a commercial kitchen and the only
things missing now are food and people. As it is,
on Sundays, the church does offer a breakfast by

donation to anyone interested.
We cant run on free though because then the
kitchen wont be able to make a breakfast, we
need people to donate enough money to at least
make enough to buy the food for the next breakfast, said Audrey Senft, who runs the kitchen.
The church and its community are being built
on the passion of the people within it. For Karp
the passion began when she was younger. She
was born in Norway and moved to Surrey, B.C.
when her family immigrated. A lot of her friends
were street kids and addicts, many of whom died
young. She always recognized, though, that they
were people too, just hurt people, and there
wasnt a lot of love shown, something she wanted
to share. Addiction is a way to get away from hurt
and pain, said Karp, and addicts have no coping
skills to do that, which is why they turn to alcohol
or drugs or whatever it is.
At a young age she became a mom, she was
married, and has had her own ups and downs. As
life went on people would continue to cross her
path, and to this day she still loves who they are.
I have huge respect for anyone that has the
guts to walk in, even to this office, lay everything
on the table, tell me everything they have done
because they are desperate to get well, I have
huge respect for that, said Karp, which is partly
why she now tries to be there for the people that
dont have anyone, to help them and guide them
as much as she can.
I believe God can bring healing into peoples
lives.

The Crowfoot Livestock 4-H club gathered for
a grooming demonstration that was presented by
Hal Nixdorff on May 4.
Nixdorff was able to pass on his knowledge
that he has attained through numerous years of
cattle showing, including nine years in 4-H.
The kids learned the basics of washing, blowing, clipping and show preparation. Members will
be putting what they learned into action right

away, as they are participating in the Wheatland
District Heifer Show on May 8 at 3 p.m., at the
Strathmore Stockyards.
This will be followed by the club steer achievement show on May 11 at 6 p.m. held at Farmers. All of these events are in preparation for the
Grand Finale, the 4-H on Parade at the Calgary
Stampede Grounds on May 28-31. Come and support the 4-Hers at any of these events - Hope to

Standing up for families with tax reductions

Last October, Prime Minister Stephen Harper
introduced the Low-Tax Plan for Families, which
will provide benefits to four million Canadian
families this year. Low and middle-income families will receive two-thirds of the overall benefits
provided by this package.
First, the new Family Tax Cut is aimed at couples with children under the age of 18, where
one spouse is in a higher tax bracket than the
other. Transferring up to $50,000 of income from
spouse to the other can lower a familys overall
tax bill up to a maximum of $2,000.
Second, we have enhanced the Universal Child
Care Benefit (UCCB). Our Government is increasing the UCCB for children under age six. As of
Jan. 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $160
per month for each child under the age of six
up from $100 per month. Parents will now receive
$1,920 per child, per year. We are also expanding
the UCCB to children aged six through 17. As of
Jan. 1, 2015 these parents will receive a benefit
of $60 per month for each of these children. This
amounts to $720 per child, per year.
Next, we are increasing the Child Care Expense
Deduction limits by $1,000 for the 2015 tax year.
You or your spouse may be able to claim a deduction for expenses incurred for someone to look
after your child so that one of you can work or
go to school.
Lastly, we have doubled the Childrens Fitness
Tax Credit from $500 to $1,000 per child, starting
in the 2014 tax year.
Our Low-Tax Plan for Families is affordable,
even with the current challenges confronting

Canadas and Albertas economy. What we
have done is pursue a plan of balanced budgets
and low taxes for families, for individuals, and for
businesses.
This past week, Justin Trudeau promised to
raise taxes on thousands of middle class families
by replacing the Family Tax Cut with his Family
Tax Hike, and taking away your ability to save
more through your Tax Free Savings Account.
The Liberal Party will scrap the Universal Child
Care Benefit which they have long said parents
spend on beer and popcorn.
The Liberals have also stated their ideologically
opposition to income splitting and seniors should
be worried. Finally, critics are citing a $2 billion
short-fall in the Liberal plan and Justins reply has
been that he will announce details on that at a
later date.
Our Conservative Governments plan is putting
more money back in the pockets of taxpayers
as much as $6,600 per year per average family of
four. The political alternatives in Parliament want
to return to higher tax levels and roll back our record-level of support for families. They want your
money to flow back to Ottawa for them to spend
on big government. We wont let that happen.

Relay for Life fundraising

a continuing success

The Relay for Life is fast
approaching on June 13 in
Strathmore and the fundraising has been a gratifying
success.
Its going really well this
year. We decided to make the
change from a 12-hour relay
to a five-hour relay, which
we havent done in the past
with them, said Siobhan
Doherty of the Canadian
Cancer Society. Were holding it in Kinsmen Park this
year, its open to the public,
not just teams.
The pre-event fundraising
has continued to be successful and is only increasing as
the event gets closer.
Were at $5,200 of our
goal of $25,000, so thats
super exciting for us. Weve
had a silent auction, we
did a family dance and the
other thing we have coming
up at the end of the month
on May 23 we have kids karaoke night at the Quonset
and adult karaoke on May
30 at Legends Sports Bar,
said Doherty. Our biggest
goal this year is to let people know about the Relay
for Life and come out to the
event to see how fun it can
be and learn about the Canadian Cancer Society.
Doherty has been thrilled
with the community support
that Strathmore has been
able to display through the
fundraising process.
I think in a small town
you see the buy-in from
community members that
they really care and its really important to them
cancer is something that
touches so many people,
said Doherty. My main concern is trying to do a community event thats actually
meaningful to the community.
Team Value Drug Mart
has been one of the top local supporters with a total
of $1,500 raised through luminary sales, and could not
be any happier with how
their efforts are going.
It slowly kicked off and
at this point I think were
doing fairly well without
nobody knowing that this is
where the luminary people
are, said Donna Biggett,
team captain. Weve sold
about 25 and thats just customers wanting to do it or
staff members here and I
think its a good start,
Biggett admits the biggest
reason why theyve done
so well with their initiative
is because many people on
the team have been touched
by cancer.
Weve either lost or supported people that are battling cancer and something

Art project cuts

unwanted graffiti

Brandi Hebbes of the Strathmore Regional Art
Collective (SRAC) came forward to Strathmore
town council on May 6 with a proposed graffiti
project.
A couple of weeks ago, Dave Rimes, Parks
Supervisor for the Town of Strathmore, came to
SRAC with concerns regarding dealing with graffiti, specifically the graffiti on the backside of
dugouts at the ball diamonds on the south end of
Kinsmen Park, said Hebbes. Since art was a solution, SRAC was more than happy to help out.
Strathmore Regional Art Collective has put a
plan in place to prevent the unwanted graffiti
around town.
We thought of the two-pronged approach involving putting art in the graffiti areas and also
putting up graffiti walls where kids would be
welcome to paint. As an artist, this seems like a
great idea to me, said Hebbes. However, since
submitting that request to town council, we have
been able to meet with Constable Shannon White
from the Crime Reduction Unit of the RCMP here
in town.
Hebbes was impressed with what White
brought to the table for the project.
She did some very thorough research, which
she brought to the meeting on the success of
graffiti walls in many other cities in North America, said Hebbes. The walls by most accounts
were a resounding failure.
Therefore, the Strathmore RCMP would not
like a graffiti wall.
However, in this meeting we did discuss a
new approach that of developing programs
to clean up existing graffiti as it occurs, in an effort to curb more graffiti, said Hebbes. SRAC is
pretty excited to spearhead these initiatives and
we still think that installing art in the graffiti areas is still a very valid idea.
The hope is to educate young kids before they

decide get involved in graffiti.
We hope to target the young early on, before
they feel the need to turn to vandalism to belong
to something, said Hebbes.
The cost for the projects will be in the range of
$25,000- $100,000.
She was hopeful that the town would get on
board with their proposal.
At this point, SRAC is presenting this proposal
to town council for consideration. In the short
term, were only hoping that town council will approve the concept in principle and supply SRAC
with a letter to that effect, so we may submit this
letter with their application, said Hebbes. At a
later date, SRAC would propose a motion to town
council for consideration that we would be permitted to put outdoor art in problem graffiti sites,
with the art projects approved on a case-by-case
basis in accordance with specific proposals.
Councillor Denise Peterson put a motion on
the floor to provide a letter of support to the
Strathmore Regional Art Collective, as she has a
bit of background having been in meetings with
them.
I was lucky to be at the meeting with Dave
Rimes when he first talked about problems of
graffiti and heard later about the issues the RCMP
articulated. Its been a great journey to learn to
understand how negative graffiti can impact a
community and how positive art is in the same
way, said Peterson.
Theres a lot of compelling research that talks
about what Brandi has presented here that young
children participate in community-based art projects and show the good of their work.
Peterson believes this will only enhance Strathmores arts scene.
I think there is tremendous potential to bring
many artists and utilize our schools as well in the
same area. I think its a great plan and a tremendous benefit to the community, said Peterson.

Farewell may be a new beginning for beloved Rosebud couple

Performing in the 2011 Passion Play turned John
Moerschbachers life around.
I had pretty much lost all my faith in humanity, he says. The Passion Play restored a lot of
the belief that I really wanted what
(people) had to offer.
The acting was so hugely fun, he
attended Scout Week, a step toward
enrolling in Rosebud School of the
Arts (RSA).
Not with the intention of applying for admission, he says, but because I wanted to prolong the fun.
(But Scout Week) only increased my
love of theatre.
In August 2012, he and his wife
Lynn left their jobs, rented out their
Calgary home, and moved to Rosebud. John was a student again in
his 60s.
It was no small thing, John says.
But I was quite determined and
Lynn was determined that if I was
determined, shed become determined too.
Lynn took a job in Rosebud. They expected to
stay four years. But in summer 2013, Lynn was laid
off so they couldnt afford Johns second year of
school.
Rosebuds Thorny Rose Cafe asked them to take
over as managers. John is fast in the kitchen, he
says. Lynns strengths are decorating, with making
things pretty and inviting.
More importantly, they wanted to love on the
customers.
We have a heart of hospitality, Lynn says. I
know that its Gods love. Its not my love that I
love people so much ... its Gods love. And when
you see them with His eyes, you cant help but
reach out and cherish, from the littlest two-year-old
to the granny.
What Ive loved about the cafe, John says, is
meeting so many people from so many different
places. And being able to make their day special
by being there, by talking to them ... so in coming
in, we just offered what we are, and what we had.
I know this last year and a half has made a difference for lots of people, Lynn says. We bless
others but in turn were so, so very blessed ... its
been like weve had this great big family here.
John also took RSAs playwriting courses, and
acted in half-a-dozen roles from Calgary to Edmonton.
But running a caf is a mountain of work, he says. By the end
of summer 2014, theyd worked
four months of 70-hour weeks.
We were at our end, he says.
We took two weeks off and we
couldnt see straight.
And none of Johns acting was
in Rosebud.
I came to the conclusion, he
says, that my acting career ...
is best served in a larger center where theres many different
things to audition for.
They decided they couldnt run
the cafe another summer. Theyre
moving back to Calgary. The caf
will continue under new management.
John will return full-time to his
job at Rona, keep writing plays
and doing acting auditions. Lynn will look for a job
where shell keep making a difference.
Theres lots of people that need loving on, she
says. Lord, where do You have for me next?
John says, we also look forward to having some
time where we can come out here and enjoy the
things that we havent had time to enjoy, living and
working here.
But theyll miss living here.
The sweetest thing (about Rosebud) has definitely been the people, he says. The residents as
well as the visitors, all of them ... you get to be
very close to people here ... it will be hard. Well
definitely miss that.
Rosebud will miss them too.
What theyve given to the community is remarkable, says Paul Muir, RSAs education director.
Beauty and creativity run through Lynn as much
as through John.
In all kinds of ways, theres been deep disappointment (for them here). But in that disappoint-
ment, they continued to give, give, give.

Their future is bright. The dream thats planted in John, its
still unfolding ... I dont think Johns going to give up on the
dream.
Who knows what (their story) is going to look like? God
takes us on a certain journey. We think its going to go a certain way. But God is taking it this way.
John and Lynn remind each other that God has unknown
opportunities ahead.
God makes a way for everything. Gods grace is sufficient,
John says.
This is not the end, he says, quoting Winston Churchill. It
is not even the beginning of the end. It is perhaps, though, the
end of the beginning.

I want to personally thank all the Canadian Veterans for freeing my
Mother, her family, my Fathers family and the whole country of the
Netherlands, in 1945. I watched it all on TV, and I hope many of you did
as well. To see those wonderfully manicured cemeteries does my heart
good, and the reverence the Dutch hold for Canadians is overwhelming.
The stories the Veterans told were gut-wrenching, but I will tell you this,
if it werent for them, I would have been speaking German for the first 9
years of my life, before we came to Canada and I had to learn English!!
The Legions LA is holding their monthly breakfast on May 17th, from 9

The musical Wildwood Fire appears on Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage, May 6 to June 20. This
play, written by Lauren de Graaf
and Kelsey Krogman, is a treat for
everyone who loves a musical story,
and especially for fans of June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash.
We understand there was supposed to be a different kind of concert, performed by Johnny Cash,
June Carter Cash and Junes mother
Maybelle Carter. But Johnny is in
the hospital, suffering the effects of
his substance abuse, so his motherin-law Maybelle (Alix Cowman) left
June in the hospital with Johnny,
and has come to do this concert
alone. But June (Lauren de Graaf)
surprises her mother by also coming to perform, insisting she doesnt
want to disappoint their audience.
De Graaf and Cowman use stories and songs,
with banjo and ukulele, to tell the story of Junes

life, about her growing up with music, and her life
with Johnny -- their sorrows, their struggles, and
their love. While Maybelle urges June to go to her
husband, to be the supportive wife shed taught
her daughter to be, we discover that
fear of disappointing her audience
is not Junes only fear, and that its
not the real reason she insisted she
would perform.
Wildwood Fire is a touching
story, and our sell-out crowd gave
de Graaf and Cowman a standing
ovation. If you enjoy the music of
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash,
or are fascinated by their story of
victory over tragedy, youll love this

Great conversations were had as Club members brought forth

many questions to be answered for their gardens. Tips and tricks
were discussed and then the soil, not dirt, was flying as members
created some beautiful, customized planters. The Garden club is
now wrapping up and going to be starting their tours once again.

The Harvest Healing Centre is looking to take your
used cars so that the youth
in the community can learn a
new trade. Inside the church
is a little different than what
you would normally expect.
One section is a mechanics
shop, complete with a professionally installed hoist.
Don Howe, shop manager for the centre, said he
would love to see all sorts of
equipment be donated in order to teach the youth, girls
and boys, about how things
work, and possibly spark a
lifelong interest in them.
Its not only the cars, I
would like to have go-karts,
snowmobiles, motorcycles,
I dont care what it is, if its
got a motor on it, and the
kids can learn from it, (then
I want it), said Howe.
What were looking for is

people who will donate vehicles for a tax deduction, I
mean we can do that, or if
they just give them up well
pick them up free. The thing
will be to give the kids an
opportunity to play around
with them a little bit and get
a feel for things and see if
it is something that interests
them.
They will not be doing repairs for people in the community, but Howe did say if
a vehicle is donated that can
be repaired and put back on
the road, then they will go
through it, get it recertified
and may sell it to someone
that needs it.
Howe said a lot of the
members of the church have
acreages outside of town,
and this would give the kids
an opportunity to fix something up, and then take it out
and try it, and essentially see
first-hand the results of their

hard work.
Im hoping to have a few
more adults get involved, but
not only just to hold it to the
automotive, but maybe to
build a shed or let them (the
youth) learn a little bit about
wood, said Howe.
Another reason this is happening is to help give the
kids something that keeps
them off the streets. Howe
said thats something you
hear all the time, but said its
not only about that, Its see-

Pranava Yoga Studio is offering a new YogaBugs summer camp for the community.
The camps will be offered to
children in Grades 1-3 and
4-6.
It is going to be really
focused individually on the
children succeeding in the
camp, said Becky Stone,
owner of Pranava. Theyll be
getting one hour of yoga with
me and then the rest of the
day will include lots of different things in terms of keeping it focused on the yoga
principles of self-awareness,
breath capacity and power
of calming the mind that is
geared to how a kid is going
to learn it through fun.
There will be outdoor adventures, hiking around
town and seeing what the
community can teach them,
and learning about making
healthy lifestyle choices.
By keeping our group
small it allows us to do some
really neat activities, so were
looking at doing a smoothie
day where the kids can build
their own smoothies and little cooking classes here and
there, said Stone.
Were going to be teaching meditation but were going to be doing it in ways
that incorporates compassion towards the rest of the
children in the group.

that sign up for two weeks at
a time, or for a second sibling. Pricing is $200 a week,

one, but there will sunscreen

been childrens programming at the studio for a couple of years and Stone said
the instructors and members
love having the opportunity
to get to know the children
individually.
As we get to know kids
better through our yoga
classes, we realized we can
really relate to them and
how they learn and how
they communicate so that
we can communicate with
them, said Stone. Through
those lines of trust and relationship we can really
start to build a foundation
of what we believe is most
important, competence, selfawareness, compassion and
empathy.

RCMP prepares for summer

$5,000 to $8,000 in overtime.
Some of the big names coming include LeAnn Rimes, George Canyon,
Tim Hicks and the Village People.
Also coming up this summer is the
2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games,
July 16-19.
Reilly expects there will be a few
overtime shifts, but he doesnt expect
too many problems, and doesnt see
the overtime costs being much above
$2,000-$3,000.
He anticipates that Heritage Days
will be the same. Last year the detachment was able to put in less overtime
than normal, and this year he expects
the overtime costs to be in the $5,000
to $8,000 range. Reilly said he planned
to explain to the general manager the
procedure for payment of the increased
costs.
I dont believe that the town should
be paying for those costs when theyre
running something like that, those expenses are directly related to that, said
Reilly.
This spring and summer the detachment will be focusing on catching
speeders racing through school zones,
and implementing bike and foot patrols
through the town.

This summer promises to be a little
extra busy for the Strathmore RCMP.
In June the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association is hosting a concert series as part of their annual rodeo event.
That rodeo has been very good in
past years, we have (had) very little
problems with them and theyre patrons, whether its in town or at the rodeo grounds. This year could be very
different, said Strathmore RCMP Staff
Sgt. Kevin Reilly to town council in
March.
They are putting on a concert series.
What that involves is at 6 p.m., theyre
rounding up a whole lot of people and
theyre putting them in the infield, it
will have a 10-foot fence, they will have
security.
I have expressed what I need that
security company to be able to do
were going to need extra policing,
theres no doubt. I told them that, I told
them the cost without looking at it, I
suspect will be somewhere between

Strathmore High School (SHS) will
host their musical production Into the
Woods from June 1-4. The show will
start at 7 p.m. and tickets will be $10.
The show is about six well-known fairytale characters whose stories are all in
some way intertwined.
The first act consists of the characters such as Cinderella, Jack and the
Beanstalk, the childless baker and his
wife, Little Red Riding Hood and the
witch next door. Each of them finds
themselves in the woods searching for
something.
The second act is what happens after
the happily ever after when the characters show their true colours and they
find out not everything ends happily.
I would say the show is a richer experience than the movie because it explores a lot of things on stage that the
film couldnt, says Lilli Furfaro, one of
the cast members, on why this rendition
will be better than the movie.
According to Furfaro, the characters
will be interacting with each other immediately while the directors will interact with the crowd as well as the characters themselves.
The students themselves voted to do
this show over Mary Poppins and one
of the reasons was to allow for more
main characters. This story revolves
around 10 main characters so it gives
them more of an equal chance to be on
the stage.
Deanne Bertsch is the teacher in
charge of this production. She praises
the hard work that the cast has put into
the production and says that while she
wouldnt normally tackle this kind of
show with high school students, they
are rehearsing in their own time while
supporting one another.
This is one of the most talented classes that I have ever had the pleasure of
teaching, said Bertsch. They are very
musical and have amazing instincts
when it comes to storytelling and acting.

Spring Fair, plant exchange

The popular plant exchange
held each year at the Strathmore Municipal Library is returning on May 23 and this year
a spring fair is being added to
the event.
This year given the success
of our Christmas market that we
had, we decided to incorporate
a spring fair alongside with our
plant exchange, said Carmen
Erison, assistant director of li-
brary services.
There will be 11 vendors set
up for the fair. It will cost $20
per table and will run from 10
a.m. until 4 p.m.
The money raised will be put
towards programming at the
library. All of the vendors can
be found under the website at
http://strathmorelibrary.ca/content/spring-fair.
The plant exchange will only
run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and
is the perfect opportunity for
those looking for a new plant to
be able to do so. Seeds will also

be accepted again.
It is an exchange, we wont
be selling plants at the program,
we dont want it to be a greenhouse type of idea, but it is
meant to help out people who
cant afford to go purchase new
plants, said Erison.
Throughout the day there will
be a raffle, with the prizes for
the raffle being donated by each
of the vendors. This fall the bulb
exchange will also return to the
library.

Garden plots ready at Four Sisters Farm

Ever wanted to garden but dont want

to commit a large chunk of your yard
to it?
Four Sisters Farm has the community
garden plots ready for people to rent,
and all you need to bring is yourself
and some seeds.
For $170 a year, all gardening tools,
the plot, which is 16x12, and the water
will be provided.
There will also be a deer fence lining
the property and there are plans for a
playground and sandbox for the kids
to play.
You can come here and just spend
your morning (gardening), said Paula
Beekman, owner and creator of Four
Sisters Farm.
I am going to provide a shed with
tools. They dont have to bring anything, they just have to come and enjoy
it.
The farm first began operations last
fall, and is meant to be a place for the

community to gather for various events,
or to book for things like weddings. In
the mornings, at 9 a.m., there is a walking group that meets at the farm and
anyone is welcome to attend it, just
show up said Beekman.
She plans to have a walking on sunshine maze, potato field, carrot field,
and pumpkin patch. There will be a
porta-potty for people working in the
garden, and she hopes to have a greenhouse to sell plants and garden things
eventually.
I think it is a great spot for people
to come, said Beekman. Were trying
to really keep what was here naturally
to begin with, we didnt really cut anything down that wasnt our goal.
Four Sisters Farm will also be a part
of Open Farm Days this August. Open
farm Days is about connecting farmers
and ranchers with their urban and rural partners to see demonstrations, and
learn more about the people that grow
their food.

Lion Kings comes to Strathmore

Lion King Kids is coming to the

Brentwood Elementary stage later
this month for everyone to enjoy. The
school is one of the first to get the
rights to perform the play, which Carolyn Steeves, Brentwoods music specialist, said is an amazing adaptation
of the movie.
Its an amazing adaption because
when you go through the play, all the
main songs are there and basically its
all there, they did an amazing job,
said Steeves.
Drama is not new to the school, but
it has been a few years since the drama
club has been active and performing.
Last year was the first year the club
came back with the adaptation of 101

Dalmatians.
Were hoping to make it a tradition
again, said Steeves.
Tristan Payne plays Simba, Megan
Mertz is Nala and Kayty Thompson
is young Nala in the play. Each has a
favourite part of the play, and of the
movie.
I like when I am confronting Scar
because she acts so nice, and then she
tries to double cross and get over it
and it doesnt work and then the hyenas meet and it doesnt go good for
him, said Payne. In this version of the
play Scar is a she.
I think one of the neatest things will
probably be the gorge, because you
have to have Mufasa die, and we have
to have all the people running through
the gorge, said Payne.
I like when I stand up for Simba
and Im saying that we think hes king
and I have all the lionesses behind me,
and were walking towards Scar trying
to tell him to step down, said Mertz.
My favourite would be the scene
where I am with the hyenas, young
Simba and Shenzi is supposed to say
make mine a cub (sandwich), said
Thompson.
All three of the students have been
involved with a number of extracurricular activities at the school.
Its a good experience because
you get to act and sing and just enjoy

yourself, and its really fun to pretend
youre someone when sometimes not
and you can change your character
and be someone you sometimes arent
and just kind of have some fun with
that, said Payne.
I always like to do all the stuff, I
like music and I like acting, I like to do
activities in the school as well so I just
wanted to do this, said Mertz.

Staff is working hard to prepare for
the May 27 opening date. Tami LeMoine is on costumes and lighting, Laurie Motley is the drama coach, Janell
Peltonen is doing the set design and
sound, and Carolyn Steeves is the musical director and choreographer. The
play will be held on May 27 at 1:30
p.m. and 7 p.m.
The 2015 Alberta election was quite

the time to get involved in provincial
politics. However, my experience in
meeting and working with StrathmoreBrooks constituents made it worthwhile
in so many ways. For that I am grateful.
I want to express my appreciation to
everyone who was involved in supporting

with your dedication and loyalty, will

Building a community within a community

Since opening their doors in 2012 Pranava Yoga

studio has worked to build a community of likeminded people.
Each month that passes more people join the studio, but owner Becky Stone is always looking to see
more and more people walk through the doors and
learn about a new way of life.
Yes we are a yoga studio, we offer yoga classes,
but we have this wonderful group of instructors that
are individually building communities within their
classes, but then as a whole our studio is building
this wonderful group of people that are seeking
health, balance, lifestyle wellness, said Stone.
So in that were finding that were branching out
a little, in terms of offering programs that follow the
same principles that a yoga practice has, but in another way.
One example is workshops are now being offered

on Qi Gong, which is Chinese in its origins. Stone
said that Tai Chi is a form of Qi Gong, which is the
martial arts form for creating power and energy in
your body.
The Qi Gong that were offering is medically based,
so its about creating health and wellness within the
life forces of your body, said Stone.
Another program the studio wants to offer is the
mindful walk program that incorporates walking
with yoga. Walking can cause discomfort and pain in
the body, despite being meant to ease those things.
If it is causing you issues, come to this mindful
walk program, take a yoga class that builds the body
awareness, realigns body patterns, create true range
of motion, and learn how to walk, and then incorporate that with a meditation done while walking,
said Stone.
Being part of the mindful walk is something that
you can also take with you through the week and
into other programs.

Another successful way the studio has been creating communities is with the Pranava Teen girls program. Stone said they are seeing success with it, and
its a way they are helping teens create a healthy and
balanced life as they come in to adulthood.
Stone said she and her fellow instructors are in
love with the community of Strathmore and the community as a whole, and cannot wait to see the growth
thats yet to come.
The studios drop-in schedule offers over 20 classes
per week, programs that incorporate kids, teens, seniors, people living in chronic pain and for people
looking for other tools for health and wellness that
may not necessarily be yoga.
There is also a line of different products made by
Strathmore community members, from soy candles
with essential scents, to handmade sunscreens and
deodorants, available to purchase and support local
entrepreneurs.

The Strathmore U16 and U21
junior Thunder fast pitch teams
steadily improved against some
great teams in their home tournaments from May 8-10.
U16 coach Jason Sauve saw
tremendous improvements in his
team from the first pitch of the
tournament to the end.
We had a great weekend of
ball finishing third in our opening
weekend tournament, said Sauve.
We started with a 11-5 loss to a
tough St. Albert team on Friday,
Saturday saw a 16-1 win over Jarvie, and a 18-3 win over Innisfail.
That put us in the semifinal
playoff Sunday against Jarvie, that
ended in an 8-6 loss.
Despite competing against older teams, he liked how his team
responded to the challenge.
We were competing against
U18 teams while we are a U16B
team, so it was a good weekend, said Sauve. The girls have
already shown improvement and
the performance points towards a
strong season.
He admits the play at the plate
has been exceptional so far in this
young season.
We saw the whole team being
patient at the plate and driving
the first pitches, very few strikeouts and many good hits, said
Sauve.
U21 juniors head coach, Lanky
Johnson, liked the determination
that his players displayed from
the opening pitch and were able
to carry it through the rest of the
games.
Friday night began with a
come-from-behind win in a highscoring game with 14-13 win over
Duchess DBs, the Medicine Hat
league team. We were trailing
early 8-0, slowly came back and
tied the game and won it in extra
innings, said Johnson.
Saturday, we went up against
the senior womens team, the Calgary Hurricanes, and were never
in trouble and grabbed an 8-5
win.
The victory guaranteed the
Thunder either the first or second
seed going into the last round
robin where again they showed

resiliency.
The Thunder fell behind early,
but shut the door on the Sluggers
in the final three innings picking up four runs late in the game
and left two in scoring position
with the final out and lost 7-4,
said Johnson.
The Thunder got a re-match
with the Duchess DBs and some
early errors cost them a victory.
Sundays playoff (saw us) face
the DBs once again and had a 4-4
tie (going) into the 6th inning, but
we had two back to back miscues
and allowed the DBs three runs
and had to settle for a 7-4 loss,
said Johnson.
Overall, Johnson has been satisfied with his teams play so far this
season.
The Thunders record for the
season to this point is at 8-2 and
playing overall really good ball.
The defense is really playing solid
and all players have had impact
with the bats, he said.
Both teams will be hosting provincials in Strathmore from July
8-10.

Langdon Schools Grade 6 classes have taken on
the task of redesigning the outdoor arena with their
own artwork.
Grade 6 teacher Lyle Weigum gave his students,
along with the other Grade 6s, the option after
watching a movie that had similar characteristics to
their project.
We watched a movie called Pay It Forward in
school and the project basically started what can we
do to make Langdon a better place? and one of the
ideas that we came up with was painting the outside
of the outdoor rink, said Weigum.
They described it as, it doesnt look nice, the
paints peeling, so they wanted to spruce it up and
make it look nicer. Basically, the project has grown
from there, scraping the old paint off and putting a
fresh coat on ... and (we) thought can we put stuff
on it.
The students worked with an artist to get approvals on their designs.
The kids worked with a muralist from Calgary,
Vince Vandurme, and he came out to the school and
they drew designs and they got tips from him, what
are good mural designs. He then takes their designs
and spreads them onto big sheets of paper, said Wegium. Theyre going to take what hes got, put that
on the wall of the rink and well paint that. Theres
a Grade 6 team and each class has a team inside of
that.
The artwork will really depict the areas image.
The general theme is Our Langdon and each
class has a different theme. So one class shows
Langdon sports, another chose Langdon: new and
old and the other class chose prairie/western life,
said Weigum.
I think the coolest part about the project is the
kids have been the driving force behind it. Theres
90 Grade 6s, so 11-12 years old, and theyve been
the ones that say hey we want to do this and can
we do this.
The support from the community has been tremendous thus far.
Weve been working with the Langdon Community Association, they were my first contact when the
kids said they wanted to do this and theyve been
enthusiastic. supporters. They contacted Rona in
Strathmore and they donated some of the supplies
that were required and Langdon Community Association covered some of the others, said Wegium.
Borbus Contracting, theyre one of the contractors thats really helping us out, both for materials
and providing some expertise.
The project will be put into place on May 20 and
21 with the installation of the plywood, and the
paintings will begin on May 22.
The project will be done by the end of the school
year.

The Fun Country Riding Club hosted their first show of the season on April 26 at the Strathmore Ag Society grounds. Melanie Lausen shared her judges comments with the riders
after placing each class thank you, Melanie. There were some new faces, and quite a
few we havent seen all winter. So it looks like 2015 will bring some more new members

A couple of Strathmore players had

strong showings at their respective
tournaments from April 29- May 3.
Karissa Hammond displayed her resilient defensive abilities at the Alberta Challenge in Medicine Hat, while
Lucas Muenchrath found chemistry
quickly at the Alberta Cup in Canmore.
Muenchrath was surprised at how
skilled and fast the players were at the
tournament.
It was a really talented tournament
obviously because its the top players
in Alberta but our team came together really quick and we got chemistry
really quick, said Muenchrath. We
came together but fell short.
Team South held on to a 3-0 lead
heading into the third, but Calgary
South seemed to score at pivotal times
in the game.
We played a good third period, like
they didnt even touch the puck, said
Muenchrath. We outplayed them for
20 minutes, they just seemed to score
goals, but our goalies played outstanding all week.
He felt that his play, along with that
of his other Raider teammates, was
pretty consistent throughout the tournament.
I thought I played pretty good. My
other Raider teammates ( Joel Krahenbil, Cole Clayton, Tyler Strath and
Brady Skiffington) all played pretty

good, everyone just played simple
and played their game and just did
what they could.
Meanwhile, Hammond thought her
team gelled well early enough in the
tournament to have success.
It was good experience, I learned
a lot, and my team came together real
quickly, said Hammond. We knew
how each other played and worked
well on the ice.
There were many areas of the Lightnings game that were strong points.
We had great passing throughout
the tournament, we always did good
passing and defense, said Hammond.
Especially the north teams, I didnt
know a lot of them so they were faster. My first game I was a little bit rusty
but after that it was all good.
She admits that it was nice going out there and proving everyone
wrong about their team.
It was nice going out there and
showing them that we earned it and
can win it and making the finals was
also fun, said Hammond.
DRAFT TIME
The WHL bantam draft was held on
May 7 in Calgary and three local products got drafted. Cole Clayton went
46th overall to the Medicine Hat Tigers, followed by Tylers Strath going
59th overall to the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Joel Krahenbil went 141st
overall to the Spokane Chiefs.

The Strathmore Spartans high

school boys soccer team was
glad to add some players from
different school sports to improve their teams performance
on the field.
Our team is finally coming
together now that we have all
our badminton players done
with provincials and our hockey player home from the Telus
Cup, said head coach Kaitrin
McDonnell.
She had a sense of relief since

the team just got their first victory a week ago.
We are sitting at one win versus FHCS (Foothills Composite
High School) last week and four
losses, said McDonnell. With
a win under our belt and five
goals finding its way to the back
of the net, we are looking forward to playing the rest of this
seasons games before heading
to zones May 29-30.
Despite some struggles, she
has seen a lot of upside with this
group.
We have nothing but room

to improve and the next couple
of seasons we are going to be
great weve improved on communication and getting shots on
net, said McDonnell. We need
to still work on being first to the
ball and getting the smart pass
out, not just a fast-reaction pass.
The Spartans resumed their
season on May 13 in Canmore
(result not available as of press
time.) The team will play their
next game at home on May 20
(4:30 p.m.) when they face Holy
Trinity Academy.
The games are getting closer!

Rollin to Victory
Wheatland Inland Hockey Association sent two teams to this past weekends NARCh Qualifier in Red Deer. This seasons opening tournament was
a chance for the boys to get their wheels back under them. The U14s finished fifth and the U17s finished fourth. The teams had their first opportunity to play together as well as with some kids who had not played before. It
was a great success with the teams having strong finishes against Western
Canadas best for this tournament.

Team Canada senior womens rugby player Maria Samson came to the Strathmore High School on May 4. She spoke to players
of the Strathmore High School and Smith Falls rugby teams about overcoming obstacles to succeed in the sport.

The game of rugby can be a daunting sport at

the best of times, but coming back from numerous
knee surgeries is quite the feat for any player to
overcome.
For National Senior Womens team player Maria
Samson, it was an emotional ride, but perseverance and support is what got her to where she is
in her in career presently.
Samson came and spoke to the Strathmore and
Smith Falls rugby players about how setbacks in
ones career can be overcome and to never give
up.
In terms of inspiration, rugby is an all incumbent sport, theyre the ones in the room that are
giving it a try. One of the things is to keep playing with that positive attitude because you never
know what will happen, said Samson. My story
is pretty unique in terms of where I came from
and how I got there, but it was constant to keep
trying and playing rugby because I love rugby.
The 2014 World Cup silver medalists main
message to the girls was to always listen to your
coaches, as each of them will have a different message that can be invaluable to a player.
Youre going to have five different coaches tell
you five different things and theyre going to be
completely opposite, but you got to give each one
a try. I think with rugby, growing up, not every-

ones on the same page and thats all across the

world, said Samson.
She thought the exchange was of huge benefit
to the two schools.
I think its absolutely huge, from a personal level, being able to go across the country during my
engineering co-ops, said Samson. Playing in different cities, you have these friends all over Canada and thats what I think theyre starting to do.
Despite all the emotions Samson has experienced, she will always cherish the World Cup experience.
It was unreal, it brings back so many memories
and its so emotional and just the journey to get
there, said Samson. The proudest moment is
being able to share it with the teammates that I
had there and playing in front of 20,000 people
with 25 other girls that worked so hard to get
there.
She had determined that the day-by-day approach was the best way to overcome her injuries,

I think its not looking too far into the future
and just literally taking it one day at a time. Today
is going to be better than the last day and obviously theres a goal in mind, said Samson. I think if
you look too far ahead, you get disappointed with
how youre progress is going. For me its keeping
your head down and rehabbing and once you get
to the point of starting to do stuff you take advantage of it.

The Canadian Trick Riding Association (CRTA) is a
newly-formed association
that hopes to bring new
riders into the sport of
trick riding by offering a
safe environment in which
to learn, as well as a support network for the rider
s and their families.
We want to actually
bring more young people
into the sport that is our
goal, says Jerri Duce, a
well-known trick rider and
one of the CRTA directors.
It is not for the trick
riders already out there,
already performing, it is to
bring new people in.
No experience will be
required for joining, and
while most participants
will be children, there are
categories for a peewee
age, a junior age, an intermediate age and a senior
age.
Those that want to learn
the sport will be placed
into clinics run by the directors of the association.
All of the directors are
trick riders of high stature
and want to be able to inspire the new riders coming in, while making sure
things are conducted in a
safe manner.
It is a dangerous sport
and we have had so much
interest in the past few
years, said Niki Flundra,
another of the CTRA directors. Both young and
old showed interest in
starting, so we just hope
we can give them a really
great chance to ride in a
safe and fun manner along
with other kids.
The association has already been making news
since its formation in December 2014. One of their
first achievements was
sending some of the children to Australia to compete in the Royal Easter
Show Trick Riding Competition that was held in
March.
With this in mind, the
CRTA has big plans for
the future as they hope to
host more clinics to train
and bring exposure for the
sport. They also hope to
take part in more competitions and eventually make
their way to the Canadian
finals.

Family and friends of Yvonne (Cote)

Fawkes are mourning her passing on
Friday, May 8, 2015. Yvonne was born in Carseland
on April 27, 1926 to Ethel and Walter Cote. At the
early age of seven Yvonne sadly lost her mother
and sister, and was predeceased by eleven siblings.
Mom knew and was never afraid of hard work. In
her younger days she knit all her family heavy
sweaters for the winter and in her later years she
had given away hundreds of unique baby sweaters.
While in the Air Force her main job was to bake 40
pies each morning. Grandmas cookie jar was always full, and she delivered muffins and cookies to
friends, as well as the best bread and buns. One of
her favorite past times was taking time to enjoy the
view of the beautiful prairies. Yvonne and William
Fawkes raised two daughters Heather (Dale) Cockx
and Monica (Michael) Monner and was an attentive
and caring grandmother to Darren (Krista), Scott
(Renae), Colin (Cindy), Jennifer and Rachel. She
adored her beautiful great-grandchildren Aidan,
Connor, Parker, Karson and the lovely Lily. The kids
all cherished their GG. At her passing Mom suffered from a heart attack but put up a valiant fight.
At Moms request there will be no Funeral Service.
The family would like to thank the kindness of the
Wheatland Lodge, the staff of Strathmore Hospital,
Francis Van Bussel and her many friends who faithfully visited over the years. To send condolences,
