WHAT IS POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene (PP) is a generic name

for a family of semi crystalline
polymers.
PP, as well as polyethylene (PE),
belongs to the group of polyolefin,
that are derived from a group of
base chemicals known as olefins.
HISTORY

Phillips Petroleum chemists J. Paul Hogan and

Robert L. Banks first polymerized propylene in
1951. Propylene was first polymerized to a
crystalline isotactic polymer by Giulio Natta as
well as by the German chemist Karl Rehn in
March 1954.

Polypropylene is the second most important

plastic with revenues expected to exceed
US$145 billion by 2019.
STRUCTURE OF POLYPROPYLENE
SCIENTIFIC NAME
&PROPERTIES

IUPAC NAME-poly propene.

Chemical formula- (C3H6)n

Density- 0.855 g/cm3, amorphous

0.946 g/cm3, crystalline

Melting point- 130 to 171C (266 to

340F; 403 to 444K)
OTHER PROPERTIES
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

The Young's modulus of PP is 1300

-1800 N/mm.

Normally tough and flexible, especially

when copolymerized with ethylene.

Good resistance to fatigue.

THERMAL PROPERTIES
The melting point :-171C
Thermal expansion-very large(but somewhat less
than that of polyethylene).

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Resistant to fats and almost all organic solvents,

apart from strong oxidants at room temperature.
Non oxidizing acids and bases can be stored in
containers made of PP.
Due to the tertiary carbon atom PP is chemically
less resistant than PE .
DEGRADATION

It degrade by heat & UV radiation.

Soil samples mixed with starch capable of
degrading polypropylene in presence of
microbial communities.

OPTICAL PROPERTIES

It can be made translucent, when uncoloured.

CONCLUSION
This presentation has an overview of the
changes & current state of PP
manufacturing process.
It has mainly focused on the trends in
process development aiming at improving
quality.
A variety of process, such as many technical
improvements aiming at stable operation &
process making high temperature
polymerization possible by the improving
the polymer particle & monomer separation
efficiency through operation in the
supercritical range for propylene had been
developed.
