Unit 3: Chemical Kinetics

This document covers chemical kinetics and integrated rate laws, including first order, second order, and zero order reactions. It defines rate laws and integrated rate laws, and gives the equations to calculate concentration over time, half-life, and time to reach a specific concentration for each reaction order. Examples are also provided to demonstrate using the equations to analyze reaction kinetics.

First Order Rate Law

ln[A] = -akt + ln[A]o

where [A]0 = initial concentration at t=0
[A] = final concentration at any time t

example:
The decomposition of N2O5 at 67 C is 1st order with k = 0.35/min.

Calculate:

a. the concentration after 4.0 min if the initial concentration is 0.16 M

b. the time required for the concentration to drop from 0.16 M to 0.10 M

c. the half-life for the reaction

example:
Consider the reaction:

I (g) + I (g) I2 (g)

k = 0.70 M/s at 23 C, 2nd order

Calculate:

a. the concentration after 2.0 sec if the initial concentration is 0.086 M

b. the time required for the concentration to drop from 0.10 M to 0.045 M

c. the half-life for the reaction if the initial concentration is 0.60 M

d. the half-life for the reaction if the initial concentration is 0.42 M

order expression equation

first rate = k[A] ln[A] - ln[A]0 = -kt t = 0.693/k

second rate = k[A]2 1/[A] = kt + 1/[A]0 t = 1/k[A]0

zero rate = k[A]0 [A] = -kt + [A]0 t = [A]0/2k
