Unit 5: Acids and Bases

This document discusses buffer systems, which resist changes in pH upon the addition of acids or bases. It defines buffers as consisting of a weak acid and the salt of its conjugate base, or a weak base and the salt of its conjugate acid. The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for calculating pH of a buffer solution is presented. Examples are given for calculating the pH of various buffer solutions, including acetic acid/sodium acetate, phosphoric acid/sodium phosphate, and oxalic acid/sodium oxalate buffers.

systems that resist drastic change in pH after
addition of H+ or OH-
from weak acid and salt of its conjugate base;
or
from weak base and salt of its conjugate acid

acetate buffer: CH3COOH/NaCH3COO

bicarbonate buffer: H2CO3/NaHCO3

carbonate buffer: NaHCO3/Na2CO3
