Community

Development

1. Community development- is a
process where community members
come together to take collective
action and generate solutions to
common problems.
2. Social Community- the networks of
relationships among people who live
and work in a particular society,
enabling that society to function
effectively.
3. Social Planning- is a process that
helps communities identify strengths
and weaknesses and determine ways to
improve the quality of life in the
community.
4. Versatility- ability to adapt or be
adapted to many different functions or
activities.
5. Rural Development- is the
process of improving the quality of life
and economic well-being of people
living in relatively isolated and sparsely
populated areas.
6. Linkage- the action of linking or the
state of being linked.
7. Social Policy- is a term which is
applied to various areas of policy,
usually within a governmental or
political setting
8. Social Change- refers to any
significant alteration over time in
behavior patterns and cultural values
and norms.
9. Social Policy- is a term which
is applied to various areas of policy,
usually within a governmental or

10. Leadership- the action of
leading a group of people or an
organization.
11. Outsiders- a person who does
not belong to a particular group.
12. Interest Community- A community
of interest is a community of people
who share a common interest or
passion. These people exchange ideas
and thoughts about the given passion,
but may know (or care) little about
each other outside of this area.
13. Colonization- the action or
process of settling among and
establishing control over the
indigenous people of an area.
14. Community Action Agencies- are
private or public nonprofit
organizations that were created by the
federal government in 1964 to combat
poverty in geographically designated
areas.
15. Boom Town- is a community
that undergoes sudden and rapid
population and economic growth, or
that is started from scratch.
16. Collaboration- the action of
working with someone to produce
or create something.
17. Community led
Development- is the process of
working together to create and
achieve locally owned visions and
goals
18. Advocacy- is association with a
planned and systematic series of
activities aimed at achieving a
specific change.
19. Representation- This is the
action or fact of one person standing
for another so as to have the rights
and obligations of the person
represented.
20. Asset Mapping- This is a
technique for groups to identify the
assets of their community and connect
them in order to increase the capacity
of the community to meet its needs.
21. Coalition- is an organization of
individuals, representing diverse
organizations, factions or
constituencies, who agree to work
together in order to achieve a
common goal.
22. Communal- Communal usually
refers to collective ownership and use
of property by members of a group or
community.
23. Equity- refers to the right of the
individual to a fair share of the goods
and services in society, However, equal
treatment will not necessarily
guarantee equal results.
24. Healthy Public Policy- Healthy
public policies are decisions or actions,
which are intended to have a positive
impact on peoples' health.
25. Indicator- An indicator is a
measurement that reflects the status
of a system (e.g. social, economic or
environmental) over time.
26. Mobilization- is the process of
organizing people and resource to
create change. It puts ideas into
action and brings momentum to a
project.
27. Resources- Resources can be
tangible (e.g., money, computers,
staff, volunteers) or intangible (e.g.,
motivation, in-kind services, actions).
28. Sustainable Development- is a
development which "meets the needs
of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs."
29. Universality- Universal services are
available to everyone, without the need to
meet eligibility requirements or to
demonstrate financial need.
30. Community Animation- is a method of
community development in which the
worker serves as a catalyst to bring
together people, knowledge, skills and
other resource to enable a community
coalition or group to bring a community
vision to life.
