Wrenches

To ensure the safe use of all wrenches,

workers must always be alert for the
possibility of:
1) A wrench slipping off the fastener.
2) A wrench breaking.
3) A fastener turning free.

4) A fastener breaking.
Wrenches (General)

 Workers brace themselves to avoid

losing balance.

 Pull the wrench towards you.

 Inspect wrenches for flaws.

 Do not grind wrenches to reduce their

sizes.
Proper Use of Wrench

IMPACT WRENCH
Wrenches (Adjustable)

 Recommended for light-duty jobs or when

proper size fixed-opening wrench is not
available.

 Torque wrenches are used when the torque

is specified for the job.

 Recalibrate them frequently in accord with

the manufacturer’s specification.
Adjustable Wrench
Screwdrivers

 Most screwdrivers are not designed to be used on electrical

equipment. Use an insulated screwdriver.

 Do not hold an object in the palm of one hand and press a

screwdriver into it, place it on a bench or a table.

 Never hammer with a screwdriver.

 Check for broken handles, bent blade, etc.

Pliers

 Do not use pliers as a substitute for

hammers or wrenches.

 Use insulated pliers when doing

electrical work.

 Inspect installation frequently to make

certain that it is free of breaks or
cracks.

Impact Tools

Impact tools refers to a variety of

hammers and related tools used to
drive items such as nails into
materials by the use of manual or
powered tools.
Impact Tools

 Hammers

 Sledge hammers

 Riveting hammers

 Claw hammers
Hammers

 Use the correct hammer for the type of work to be done.

 Have an unobstructed swing when using a hammer and

watch for overhead interference.

 Check for defects before using.

Portable Power Tools Safety
What are the Dangers of Portable Power
Tools?

 Electric shock
 Particles in the eyes
 Fires
 Falls
 Explosion of gases
General Precautions
in the use of
Portable Power Tools
Never carry a tool by the cord or hose.
Never yank the cord or hose to disconnect it from receptacle.
Keep cords and hoses away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
Disconnect tools when not using them, before servicing and
cleaning and when changing accessories.
Secure work with clamps or vise, freeing both hands to operate
the tool.
Be sure to keep good footing and maintain good balance when
operating power tools.
Maintain tools with care: keep them sharp and clean for best
performance.
Remove all damaged portable power tools from use and tag
them: ”Do Not Use”
Groups of Portable Power Tools

1. Electric Tools
2. Pneumatic (Air-Powered)
Tools
3. Internal Combustion Tools
4. Explosive (Powder Actuated)
Tools
Electrical Tools (Hazards)

 Electric burns and

shocks.

 Fall off a ladder or

other elevated work
surface.

Portable Electric Tools (General Safe
Practices)

 Operate electric tools within their design limit.

 Use gloves and appropriate safety footwear

when using electrical tools.

 Store electric tools in a dry place when not in

use.

 Do not use electric tools in damp or wet

locations unless they are approved for that
purpose.
Portable Electric Tools (General Safe
Practices)

 Keep work areas well-lighted when operating electric tools.

 Ensure that cords from electric tools do not present tripping

hazard.
Portable Abrasive Wheel Tools
Portable Abrasive Wheel Tools

Portable abrasive grinding, cutting,

polishing, and wire buffing wheels create
special problems because they may throw
off flying fragments.

Abrasive wheel tools must be equipped with guards that:

1) Cover the spindle end, nut, flange projections;
2) Maintain proper alignment with the wheel; and
3) Do not exceed the strength of the fastenings.
When using a powered grinder:

1. Always use eye or face protection.

2. Turn off the power when not in use.
3. Never clamp a hand-held grinder in a vise.

Portable Pneumatic Tools
Portable Pneumatic Tools

Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air and

include chippers, drills, hammers and sanders.

Main Danger!
Getting hit by one of the tool’s attachments or by some
kind of fastener the worker is using with the tool.
Pneumatic (Air-Powered) Tools

 Air powered grinders

 Pneumatic impact tools

 Jackhammers

 Air-powered nailers and staplers

Safety Precautions in the Use of Pneumatic
Tools

 Wear head and face protection

 Use screens to protect nearby workers
 Never point air guns toward anyone
 Use appropriate hearing protection.
 For jackhammers:
- Use heavy rubber grips
- Wear safety glasses and safety shoes
- Use face shield
Powder-Actuated Tools
Powder-Actuated Tools

These are used for fastening fixtures and materials to the

metal, pre-cast or pre-stressed concrete, masonry brick
and tightening rivets, and punching holes.
Hazards of Powder-Actuated Tools

 Accidental discharge
 Ricochets
 Ignition of explosive or combustible atmospheres
 Projectiles penetrating the work
 Flying dirt and other particles.
Safety Precautions in the Use of Powder-
Actuated Tools

 Do not use a tool in an explosive or flammable atmosphere.

 Inspect the tool before using it.
 Do not load the tool unless it is to be used immediately.
 Do not leave a loaded tool unattended.
 Keep hands clear of the barrel end.
 Never point the tool at anyone.
Hydraulic Power Tools
Hydraulic Power Tools

All jacks – including lever and ratchet jacks, screw

jacks, and hydraulic jacks – must have a stop
indicator, and the stop limit must not be
exceeded.
Hydraulic Jack

To set up a jack, make certain of the following:

1. The base of the jack rests on a firm, level surface;

2. The jack is correctly centered;
3. The jack head beards against a level surface; and
4. The lift force is applied evenly.
