INTRODUCTION
• The field of electrical engineering may be divided
into three areas of specialization namely,
• 1.Electronics 2.Power 3.Control
• Electronics basically deals with the study of
semiconductor devices and circuits at low power
levels.
• Power deals with the generation transmission and
distribution of electrical energy and static and
rotating power equipments.
• Control deals with the steady state and dynamic
characteristics of closed loop systems.
• Power electronics is defined as the use of solid
state electronics for the control and conversion of
electric power.
PRINCIPLE OF POWER
ELECTRONICS
• As efficiency is at a premium in a power electronic
converter, the losses that a power electronic device
generates should be as low as possible. The
instantaneous dissipated power of a device is equal
to the product of the voltage across the device and
the current through it (P=V×I). With such a
structure, the energy is transferred from the input
of the converter to its output by bursts. To convert
the power electronics by using rectifier.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF POWER
ELECTRONICS
The power electronic converter can be classified
into six types.
1.Diode rectifiers
2.AC-DC converters (controlled rectifiers)
3.AC-AC converters.
i)AC voltage regulators.
ii)Cycloconverters.
4.DC-DC converters(DC choppers)
5.DC-AC converters(Inverters)
6.Static switches.
DIODE RECTIFIERS
• A diode rectifier circuit converts ac input voltage
into a fixed dc output voltage. The input voltage to
the rectifier could be either single phase or three
phase ,
Some of the applications of diode rectifiers are:-
(a) Electric traction,
(b) Battery charging,
(c) Ups,
(d) Power supplies,
(e) Electrochemical processing .
AC to DC CONVERTARS
(controlled rectifiers)
• A controlled rectifier converts fixed ac voltage to
variable dc voltage. This output voltage can be
controlled by varying the firing angle .

These are used in :-

(a) Dc drives.
(b) Metallurgical and chemical industries.
(c) Excitation systems.
AC to AC
CONVERTERS

• These convert fixed ac input voltage to variable ac

output voltage .

There are two types:-

(a) AC voltage regulators.
(b) Cycloconverters
AC voltage regulators
• These converters convert fixed ac input voltage
to a variable ac output voltage without change in
supply frequency. The output voltage is controlled
by varying the firing angle of Thyristors.
These are used in :-
(a) Lighting control
(b) Speed control of fans ,
pumps.
(c) Transformer Tap changer.
(d) Ac drives.
Cycloconverters
• Cycloconverters convert input power at one
frequency to output power at a different frequency .

These are mostly used in :-

(a) Speed control of large ac drives .
(b) Static variable speed constant frequency
generators for aircraft
DC to DC Converters(DC choppers)

• DC chopper converts fixed dc input voltage to

variable dc output voltage.
• The output voltage can be controlled by ON
and OFF time of thyristors.
These are used in:
(a) Dc drives.
(b) Subway cars.
(c) Battery operated vehicles.
DC to AC Converter(Inverter)

• Inverter converts a fixed dc input voltage to fixed

ac output voltage with variable frequency.
• The output voltage can be
controlled by varying the ON time of the
thyristors.
These are used in:
(a) Ups.
(b) induction motor and
synchronous motor drives.
(c) HVDC
Static Swithces

• The power semiconductor devices

can be operated as static switches.
• If the supply given is dc the
switches are called dc switches and if the supply
given is ac then the switches are called ac switches.

efficiency, bidirectional DC/DC converters for
Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Applications
• High-efficiency, low-voltage, high-current DC/DC
Voltage Regulator Modules
• Low cost, high efficiency, AC/DC power supplies
with power factor correction
• Hard-switching and soft-switching DC/DC
converters
APPLICATIONS OF POWER
ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
• Electric traction.
• Battery charging.
• HVDC (High voltage direct current )systems.
• Machine tool control
• Control AC and DC drives in rolling mills, paper
and textile mills ,cranes, ventilation fans.
• Solid state controllers for home appliances.
• UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) for critcal
load such as computers and space applications.
ADVANTAGES OF POWER
ELECTRONICS
• Easy and flexibility in operation due to digital
controls.
• Faster dynamic response compared to the electro
mechanical converters
• High efficiency due to low losses in the Thyristors.
• Long life and reduced/minimal maintenance due
to the absence of mechanical wear.
• Control equipments using Thyristors are compact
in size.
DISADVANTAGES OF POWER
ELECTRONICS
• Generate unwanted harmonics.
• Harmonics are injected into power supply lines
affecting the performance of other loads and
equipments.
• Unwanted interference with communication
circuits due to electromagnetic radiation.
• Special protection circuits must be used to protect
the thyristor devices.
• Thyristors must be rated for maximum loading
conditions.
CONCLUSION
• The presentation is design and
constructed and capable of external device run by
a power electronics.
• Power electronics is the use of electronic
circuits to convert and control electricity.
