The key takeaways are about identifying themes and subject matter in artworks and understanding how they relate to the medium and time period.

Subject matter is the literal topic depicted, while theme is the broader conceptual topic or philosophy presented.

Some examples of intersecting themes are heroism and identity, heroism and ecology, and spirituality, ecology and everyday life.

LESSON 9
Objectives: At the end of this lesson,
you are expected to:

• identify a range of themes and subject matter rendered in the various art
forms;
• understand the meaning of artworks by linking the medium and expressive
elements with their subject matter and themes ; and
• Interpret themes and subject matter by situating the works in particular
periods and social milieu as indicated by texts, symbols, and allusions or
references.
What is the difference between
subject matter and theme?

Subject Matter – the literal topic depicted in a work,

perceptible and identifiable as is by superficial judgement.

Theme – the broad topic or philosophy presented on the

conceptual level, codified into the elements of the artwork; thus, the
theme is not immediately perceptible. If there are multiple meanings
intended by the artist, the theme is the unifying thought.
Symbolism – the use of a thing to represent something
lese, such as an image or form representing an abstract
concept.

Allegory – a term that originates as a figure of speech in

literature; a complete narrative that involves sets of
symbols (such as characters) that stands for aspects of – or
is in accordance with – a larger symbolic theme.
Power – in this context, refers to societal constructs for
forces that are – or could potentially be – dominant and
exert influence over the life and being of other individual.

Gender –as opposed to the biological conditions defining

sex, gender is a construct revolving around the cultural
meanings practices, and typical roles for sex categories
from the biological sex of an individual.
Ecology – the field of study that focuses on the
relationship of organisms with their environment, how these
affect and interact with each other.

Identity – delineation on the unique qualities or condition

of an individual, being, or entity that distinguishes and
separates it from others.
