Describe a bad weather experience you have had.

You should say:
• what sort of bad weather it was
• when it happened
• where you were when it happened
and explain how it affected you.

UNIT 4 22
NOTE:
• Heavy rain
• Last month, sunny day, clear
• At school
• Too sudden, heavily, strong wind, flooded,
no preparation
 stuck, irritated, tired

UNIT 4 23
I have lived in Ho Chi Minh City since I was
born so I’m used to the changeable weather
here. However, last month I experienced an
flash flood which made me really surprised. It
happened on a sunny day and the sky was
pretty clear, I was at school, waiting for the
class to dismiss so that I can go to the café
with my friends afterwards. Then all of a
sudden, there was a change in the weather.
When I looked out the window, the sky was
getting darker and, the wind was blowing hard
and then a few moments later, it started to
pour down. It rained cats and dogs , I have
never seen such a heavy rain like that before
and within 15 minutes the schoolyard and
roads are full of water.
UNIT 4 24
So, not just my plan was ruined, I even got stuck at school for
hours because I didn’t bring any umbrellas or waterproofs at
all, I did try to run staight to home but as soon as i stepped
outside the roof, the water washed over my skin so strongly
which made me felt as if i was in the flow of a river rather than a
rain shower, and this really got on my nerves. When I could
finally got home, I saw loads of houses in my neighborhood
were flooded and off course my house was not an exception, so
after hours waiting for the rain to stop, shivering with cold , I
had to mop the floor for an hour afterwards which made me felt
even worse and more exhausted. This was the most irritated
experience I have ever had. It rains once in the blue moon in
the end of January, even the weather forecast hadn’t predicted
it so I didn’t have any preparation and not just me, loads of
people struggled with this situation too. So i would said that was
worst weather experience that i have ever had.

Describe your favourite season.

You should say:
• what the season is and when it occurs
• what the weather is like during this season
• what your typical activities are during this season
and explain why it is your favourite season.

UNIT 4 26
UNIT 4 27
Our country is located in tropical area so we have tropical climate
including four main seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter
respectively, however, summer is my cup of tea and I’m really
enjoy this kind of weather. Summer usually lasts from May to
October with the average temperature around 30 degrees Celsius
but in summer months like June or July it could get boiling hot
with daytime temperatures reaching about 40 degrees or even
more…But thankfully it doesn't stay that way for long. After
several days of blistering heat, it usually rains sometimes
torrentially which is great for heat relief.

UNIT 4 28
There are a bunch of reasons why this season is my favourite.
Firstly, I am an outdoor person who enjoy outdoor activities. In other season I
often find myself stuck at home looking out of window feeling miserable. The
sight of the sun does cheer me up. I always feel like it’s forever to wait for
summer return.
Another reason is that I do not go to school in the summer and I believe that
other students love the summer for the same reason.
In 2-month summer break, I get a great amount of free time at my disposal and
do various activities in which I am interested.
When the school year is about to come to and end, the first thing springs to
my mind is travelling. Going on a holiday around Vietnam is the best choice
for me with my best friends. We usually pay a visit to Da Lat city or Da Nang
city. Morever, a great number of movies about the summer are released such
as the one which has emerged as one of the most popular movies recently,
named “SUMMER IN CLOSED EYES”.
UNIT 4 29

Describe a polluted place.

You should say:
• What the place is
• What type of pollution it is/ are
• Cause and effect of pollution
and explain how can this pollution be controlled.

UNIT 4 30
_ Ho Chi Minh city.
_ Water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution.
_ Reason: modernization, factories and industrial zones
_ Effect: contaminate the atmosphere, cause death to many
fish and other aquatic animals, make people less healthy,
some even suffer from life-threatening diseases.
_ Solution: cut down on vehicle use, use public transport,
fine, raise awareness and educate people to protect the
environment.

UNIT 4 31
It is regrettable that Ho Chi Minh city,
where I’m living, is negatively affected by
pollution and the major environmental
problems it is facing are water pollution, air
pollution and noise pollution.
There are various reasons why this city is
badly polluted. Firstly, due to modernization,
more and more vehicles such as cars and
motorbikes are used. This leads to an
increase in exhaust emissions which
contaminate the atmosphere, not to mention
the rising level of noise pollution. Secondly,
factories and industrial zones in the city have
discharged a huge amount of untreated
waste into rivers, causing death to many fish
and other aquatic animals. UNIT 4 32
In fact, pollution makes people here less
healthy, and some even suffer from life-
threatening diseases such as lung cancer,
skin cancer, and so on. Therefore, the
government must deal with this problem right
away. Cutting down on vehicle use is the
best way to diminish air pollution and noise
pollution. We can do this by encouraging
people to use public transportation. Besides,
those who litter should pay a heavy fine.
Last but not least, I think the best solution is
to raise awareness and educate people to
adhere to environmental standards and
protect the environment.

• Q1. How can people protect the environment?
• Q2. Why do we need to protect the environment?
• Q3. What are some of the reasons cause water pollution?
• Q4. Why is the climate changing today?
• Q5. Do you think more should be done to protect natural
beauty spots in your country?
• Q6. How to protect the wildlife habitat?

UNIT 4 35
1. How can people protect the environment?

People today can protect the environment in many

ways such as turn of the lights or electric equipments on
the Earth Day, use the public transportations instead of
their own cars or motorbikes, take shorter shower and
don’t let the water running while you’re brushing your
teeth or washing the dishes, etc

UNIT 4 36
2. Why do we need to protect the environment?

Our environment is facing with several problems so we

need to protect it. First, the environment helps us to
protect the ecosystem because when it change, it will lead
lots of spices to the danger of distinction. Second, it
protects humanity. We can’t survive without it because it
provides us food, water, etc. The final is many animals are
facing with the problem that don’t have accommodation
because of human’s destruction.
UNIT 4 37
3. What are some of the reasons cause water
pollution?

There are several reasons cause water pollution.

Firstly is a large number of medical waste and domestic
waste are eliminated to rivers or lakes in their location.
Secondly is factories discard the dust directly to water
without filtering them. Last but not least, the chemical
substances or fertilizer are also the cause that lead to the
water pollution.

UNIT 4 38
4. Why is the climate changing today?

The climate is changing day by day because people burn

fossil fuel like coal, oil and gas and all of them eliminate carbon
dioxide to the atmosphere. Agriculture also adds this gas to the
admosphere and one of the most poisonous gases is methane –
which is an extremely strong greenhouse gas. All of them make
the climate hotter and hotter and the ice is melting day by day
because of the heat.

UNIT 4 39
5. Do you think more should be done to protect
natural beauty spots in your country?

In my opinion, this is totally yes because in Vietnam, there

are plenty of attractive sightseeings which are downgraded
because of the awareness of people in the local ares or the
tourists. To improve this problem, we need to raise the people’s
aware to keep the environment around the beauty spots cleaned
and beautiful to attract more tourists.

UNIT 4 40
6. How to protect the wildlife habitat?

Lots of species are now facing with the extinctive

problem or losing their accommodation. So what we need
to do now is not destroy the forest by cut down the trees
for the commercial proposes and hunt the wildlife species
for interest because they will cause ecological imbalance.

PART 3

UNIT 4 42
Question 1 :
Do you think pollution is a big problem nowadays ?
Yes, definitely. Air and water pollution are huge issues in the
modern world... The air pollution problem is
especially grave due to the increasing amount of exhaust
fumes, which are produced by cars, and result into a poor air
quality.
Question 2 : What effects does pollution have
on the environment?
Effects on plants, and especially trees, can be destroyed
by acid rains and this will also have a negative effect on
animals as well and their environment will be modified,
ozone in the lower atmosphere block the plant
respiration, and harmful pollutants can be absorbed
from the water or soil.
Question 3 : In which way do people damage
our planet?
In my point of view, we damage the Earth in many
ways. Just take a look at all those factories that
empty toxic waste into rivers and lakes...
People also destroy a great deal of natural areas in
search of fossil fuels. Not to mention poaching and
endangering of wild animals.
Question 4 : What do you do to prevent our
environment from pollution?
A lot of things... First of all, I don't litter. Also, my family
and me try to buy only environmentally friendly goods
whenever we can... And finally, I try to save trees... I
print on both sides of every sheet of paper I use and
use any left over white space to scribble notes.
Question 5: Do you think recycling is
important?
In my oppion, recycling is very important.
Recycling is one of the best ways for you to have a
positive impact on the world in which we live.
Recycling is important to both the natural
environment and us
Question 6: Do you think that the environmental
situation will improve in the nearest future?

Yes, I would like to believe so... People are getting more

and more aware of the major environmental issues that
we're dealing with nowadays... I hope that we will get
back to nature and start caring about our planet more.

PART 3

UNIT 4 49
• Question :What are some of the most serious environmental problems?

• In my opinion, one of the most serious environmental problems is global

warming. Our Earth is getting hotter each year and its cause a lot of bad
thing. Ice melts at both poles and increases every year. If we don’t have
appropriate solutions, this issue will cause the Earth to lose some of the
lands.
• Question : What is your opinion on climate change ?
• If you believe or not, climate change is occurring. The climate change is exists
and it is now a very serious problem. Its caused primarily by human activities.
And because of that, human should do some activities to reduce and solve the
problem ‘they’ have made.
• Question : Which countries cause the most pollution?

• I think the biggest country is ‘contribute’ the most pollution on the Earth is
China which is have 30% air pollution ( 2012 ). Because of the population is
exceed the number 1 billion. China have many great city, and most company
on the world choose China to develop their career by building factory in the
country.
• Question : How will our children be affected by climate
change?
• Maybe right now we cant see the affect of climate change, but in the near
future, our children will take a lot of ‘damage’. The ices of both pole will no
longer called ‘ice’, instead, it will be ‘water’. Our next generation will suffer from
what the previous ones have ‘create’.
• Question :Do you think houses will be more environmentally
friendly in the future?
• In the positive way, I think greenhouse will be popular in the future, but it
will take a lot of time. Greenhouses are now being apply for just a few
places on our planet, but it promising will be the great solution to solve
future environmental problems.
• Question : Will the climate keep changing or go back to
normal?

• Well, it depends on human. The climate will go back to normal if human

being reduce the affect on environment everyday by real activities, not
just speech. If we keep wasting our time on ruin our living environment,
the answer will be : ‘keep changing’.
Part 3
• What are some of the most • How will our children be
