GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

Let’s try to differentiate the two.

SUMMARY OF DIFFERENCES

 1. Growth is just ‘getting bigger’, whereas

development is improvement.

2. Growth can be explained as becoming bigger or
larger or having more importance.

3. Growth is termed as a physical change, where as
development is said to be physical as well as social
or psychological change.

 4. While growth is related to quantitative improvement,
development is related to quantitative as well as
qualitative improvement

5. When the term growth is related to living beings, it
can mean the increase in weight, height and bone
seize. On the other hand, development is the process
of developing skills and capacities. It deals with the
behavioral aspect of a living being.

6. In terms of economy, we say there was a steady
growth in the country’s economy over the last few
years. We also refer to countries as developed and
developing, which means that the country has made
great strides in all spheres.
8 STAGES OF LIFE
1. Pre-natal Period

 Prenatal development refers to the process in which

a baby develops from a single cell after conception
into an embryo and later a fetus.

 GERMINAL STAGE: first 2 weeks – conception,

implantation and formation of placenta
 EMBRYONIC STAGE: 2 weeks-2 months ( Formation of
vital organs and systems
 FETAL STAGE: 2 months- birth
2. INFANCY (birth to 2 years)
 Infancy is the period from birth to two years constitutes the infancy
stage of life. The infant’s basic needs being met by the parents and
this interaction leading to trust or mistrust.

 CHARACTERISTICS OF INFANT:
 Trust Vs. Mistrust
 Begins to walk and talk up to 3-4 words as sentence

5. ADOLESCENCE
 Occurs between childhood and adulthood
 It begins at around age 10 and ends around
age 21
 Growth spurt
 Emotional
 Mood swings
 STAGES:
 EARLY ADOLESCENCE (12-14 yrs)
 MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE (15-17 yrs)
 LATE ADOLESCENCE (18-20 yrs)
6. ADULTHOOD
 Successful completion of this stage can lead to
comfortable relationships and a sense of
commitment, safety, and care within a
relationship.
 Avoiding intimacy, fearing commitment and
relationships can lead to isolation, loneliness
and sometimes depression.
 Success in this stage will lead to the virtue of
love.
EARLY ADULTHOOD (19-29 yrs)
 The period from the end of adolescence, from approximately 19 yrs
to about 35 years of age is generally viewed as the early adulthood
period.

 Social roles and relationships are materialized.

 The young adult becomes a fully functioning social being assuming
the role of married family person
 Completion of physical development
 Maturation and accepts criticism and hangout with same age
groups
7. MIDDLE ADULTHOOD (30-60yrs)
 Viewed as the midlife during which people become aware of some
decline in their physiological functions
 Muscular strength and performance of major organ systems such as
digestive and circulatory systems deteriorate
 Changes in physical appearance
 Has a major role
8. LATE ADULTHOOD & OLD
ADULTHOOD ( 60 and above)
 The period of life from the sixties till death is the period of old
age. However, with increasing life expectancy and longer
work period there is delayed onset of the actual feeling of old
age.
 Besides retirement from active work life, the old people have
to cope with many other challenges such as their own
declining physical fitness, ill health, death of near ones in the
family including possible loss of spouse and loneliness.
Why do we need to know the
patterns of development?
1. Studying Human Development
Helps You Better Understand Yourself
 We were all kids once, so learning more about how children
develop and grow can provide additional insight into how we have
become the person we are. Studying human development can also
help you learn more about your future. By understanding the aging
process, we'll be better prepared when we face issues associated
with growing older.
2. Studying Human Development
Helps You Learn More About Your
Children
 studying human development can teach us a great deal about our
children. In addition to learning things that can help us make an
effective teacher, we can gain greater insight into how our children
behave, think, learn, and feel.
 Development is a complex process, so learning more about how
kids grow physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively can lead
to a deeper understanding of kids of all ages.
3. You'll Better Understand How to
Interact With Kids
 studying human development can greatly improve our ability to
interact with kids.
 Once we better understand the stages of development and what
makes kids tick, we will feel more comfortable talking, playing, and
working with them.
4. Studying Human Development
Helps You Understand What's
Normal, and What's Not
 gain a greater understanding of what's normal.
 While every person is a little bit different, human development tends
to follow a remarkably predictable pattern. Once you have studied
development, you'll know what's typical at certain ages and stages.
Continuation…

 Perhaps most importantly, studying human development makes it

easier to spot possible signs of trouble. From problems with physical
or cognitive development in early childhood to emotional struggles
later in life, being able to identify potential problems is important.
The earlier developmental problems are detected, the sooner
intervention can begin. No matter what the situation, early
detection, and treatment can lead to better outcomes.
