Introduction to AutoCAD
AutoCAD 2000 based on the following
packages
Mechanical Desktop (product design)
Architectural Desktop (building design)
Land Development Desktop (landscape design)
Civil Desktop (advanced land engineering)
3D Modeling, Customization & Programming
Files Import, Export and Accessing Databases
Introduction to AutoCAD
 AutoCAD is a general purpose Computer Aided
Drafting program designed for use on it
supports single user, personal computers and
graphic workstations
 Initially developed in 1980 by Autodesk Inc
 2D Drawing System till Release 10
 It supports 2D and 3D Drawing from Ver11
 Scope of this class is 2D Drawing only
Installing AutoCAD Software
 Minimum Hardware Requirement :
Pentium I
32 MB of Ram : Windows 95
One GB Hard Disk
About 120 MB Typical Loading for exercises
About 630 MB for complete AutoCAD
software
Starting AutoCAD
 Click the AutoCAD icon to load from the
Program Manager
 To create a new file from the following four
options :-
i. To open a drawing
A file can be opened from the existing files
available in the folder
ii. Start from Scratch
A drawing file will open with the default setting

iii Use a Template

A template can be used to open the dwg file.
iv Use a Wizard
- Select either Quick Setup Wizard or Advanced

Setup Wizard to open the DWG file.
- These wizards help to define the basic file setting in a

customized menus including units of measure and
drawing area. Steps are given as below :-
Wizard Screen appears to select “Unit of

Measurement” from the following options:
 Decimal
 Engineering
 Architectural
 Fractional
 Scienctific
Select Unit of Measurement as :
“Decimal” and press “next”

Quick Setup then ask for the “Area”
Enter width “600”
length “400”
then press “Finish” to end wizard setup

 Once the process of opening the

drawing completed, Black Screen
appears which covered most of the area
of the Drawing Editor.
 It also shows the various menus and the

command area for the execution of the
autocad package.

2000 SCREEN
The key components of the AutoCAD
screen are listed in the drawing file :-
“AUTO CAD MENU”
we will see the purpose of these menus in

the next slides ::

 Drawing Window
Covering most of the screen and contains the drawing
cursor that is used for pointing and moves as the
mouse is moved about. The axis icon in the lower left
corner shows the X and Y directions.
 Pull Down Menus

Across the top of the menu operate in the same way as
all windows menus

 Docked Toolbars
These are arranged across the top of the screen
below the pull-down menus and the left side of the
drawing area. These consists of set of button
tools, each performing some function. As you
pass the mouse pointer over a button it becomes
highlighted and if you pause for a moment a tool
tip appears to identify the button.

 Floating Toolbars
can float anywhere on the screen.
 Command Window
Immediately below the drawing area is a command
input area with the standard AutoCAD command
prompt ”command :”on the left. If you type anything
on the keyboard, then it will appear on that line.
 Status Line : It shows the x,y coordinate location
of the cursor in the drawing area.
Moving and Resizing Toolbars
 Pull Down the View Menu and Select “Toolbars…”

you will get the dialogue box illustrated on the left…
click the check box next to the Toolbar that you
would like to open
 If you move the mouse pointer to the top of any
docked or floating toolbar and then hold down the left
mouse button, you can drag it to any position on the
screen.
 It changes shape and will attach as a docked toolbar
to that edge.
The AutoCAD Command
System
 The first thing to understand about the AutoCAD
is how the command system operates.
 Every thing in AutoCAD is achieved by issuing a
command.
 There are three ways of giving a command :
- Type the command using the keyboard
Type Ist and 2nd letter or enter <>option
- Select the command from the menu
- Select the command icons from a toolbar
The AutoCAD Command System

 The command window is a dockable window

in which you can enter commands. AutoCAD
displays prompts and messages indicating
your options for the proceeding with that
command to draw a line.
 We can obtain the history of commands by

pressing “F2” to display the text screen.

 Repeating commands
Any command can be repeated simply by
pressing
• Enter Key
• Space Bar
• Right mouse button and select

command

 Canceling command
- By pressing ESC key
- By pressing ESC for multiple command
- By pressing CTRL C
 UNDO Command
Last command will be undone
 Oops Command
It will undo the most recent command

 REDO Command
* This command will restores what you have just

undone.
* Redo reverses the effects of the Undo or U

command.
Cartesian Coordinates
For the absolute accuracy, AutoCAD allows
the user to type in the coordinates as
numbers. There are three types of values
that can be entered in this way :-
Absolute Coordinates : Simply type two or three

numbers separated by a comma for example
(200,350,0)
Where x=200, y=350 and z=0
Cartesian Coordinates Cont.
 Relative Coordinates
Use relative x,y,z coordinates when we know the
position of a point in relation to the previous point.
For example to locate a point relative to 10,20,0
precede the next coordinate with the “@” symbol.

From point : Enter 10,20,0
From point : Enter @25, 45,0
Cartesian Coordinates Cont.
 Polar Coordinates
These represents an angular distance from the last point
entered.
For example to specify a point that is at a distance of 10

units from the previous point and at an angle of 45
degrees, enter @10<45.
By default angles increase in the counter clockwise

and decrease in the clockwise direction.
Setting Grid Limits
 Grid provides the visual representation of the
drawing limits. It could be set by pressing the
Tools menu and then select Drafting
Setting…
 It marks the area in a drawing with a
rectangular boundary.
 A drawing tool that helps to work in the
drawing limits.
 Plot option that defines an area to be printed.
 It is on/off with the toggle button and F7 key.
Setting Snap Limits
 It helps to restrict the movement of the cross-hair to
interval that have defined.
 Snap is useful for specifying precise points with the

keyboard or the pointing device.
 Snap precision can be controlled by giving x and y values.

It can be set by selecting the
Drafting Settings in the Tools menu.
 It is on/off with the toggle button and F9 key.

Ortho Mode
 With this option, lines are constrained to the
horizontal and vertical axes.
 An AutoCAD setting that limits pointing device

input to the right angles.
 It is on/off with the toggle button or F8 key.

Locating Points with tracking
 Tracking is visually locate points relative to
other points in a drawing.
 AutoCAD turns Ortho on and constrain the

next point selection to a path that extends
vertically or horizontally from the first point.
 It is on/off with a toggle button and F11 key.

Blips Mode
 Blips are temporary markers that appear in the
drawing area when select objects or locations.
 It can be used as references or remove them with
REDRAW or REGEN commands.
 When Blip mode is off, blips do not appear.
Command : Enter Blipmode.
Enter on to turn blips on, or off to turn them off.

Long File Names
 The drawing file name can be saved
upto 255 characters length.
 You can save the file with the following

name :-

Accessing info from Help Menu
 At any time during an AutoCAD session,

you can access online information from
the help menu.
 Use Help topics for assistance as you

work.
 Command : Enter Help or press F1
