INTRODUCTION
Technology
Science&&Technology

• Hydraulic is the use of liquid under

pressure to transfer force or motion,
or to increase an applied force.
InstituteofofScience

• Pressure on liquid is called hydraulic

pressure.

• HISTORY-In 1918 Malcolm Lockheed

develop a hydraulic braking system

PRINCIPLE
Technology
Science&&Technology

• Hydraulic brake system works on the

principle of “Pascal's law” which states that
“pressure at any point in a fluid is equal in
InstituteofofScience

all direction in space”.

• According to this law when a pressure is
applied on fluid it travels equal in all
NationalInstitute

direction so that uniform braking action is

applied on all four wheels.

MASTER CYLINDER
Technology
Science&&Technology

• The master cylinder is the heart of the hydraulic

braking system.
• It converts the force exerted on the pedal in
hydraulic pressure to apply brakes.
InstituteofofScience

• The pressure created displaces fluid through

various brake lining to each of the wheels and
apply brakes.
NationalInstitute

• Since the fluid is incompressible it act like a

liquid linkage between master cylinder’s piston
National

and the calliper and the wheel cylinder.

WHEEL CYLINDER
Technology
Science&&Technology

•Wheel cylinder is a component in drum

brake system.
•It is located in each wheel and is usually at
InstituteofofScience

the top above the shoes.

•It’s responsibility is to exert force on the
NationalInstitute

shoes so that they can contact the drum and

stop the vehicle with friction.

BRAKE SHOES
Technology
Science&&Technology

•Brake shoes are made up two piece of

sheet steel weld together.

BRAKE DRUM
Technology
Science&&Technology

The brake drum is made up of cast iron.it is positioned very close to the
brake shoes without actually touching it,and it rotates with the wheel
and axle.

BRAKE FLUID
Science&&Technology

•Brake fluid are use to transfer force into

pressure.
•It works because fluid is incompressible.
InstituteofofScience

•Brake fluid are not petroleum based.

•The three main types of brake fluids are
NationalInstitute

DOT3,DOT4,DOT5.
•DOT3 and DOT4 are glycol-based fluid and
National

DOT 4 are silicon-based.

ADVANTAGE
Technology
Science&&Technology

•Equal braking action on all wheels.

•Increased braking force.
•Simple in construction.
InstituteofofScience

•Lower wear rate of brake lining.

•Flexibility of brake lining.
NationalInstitute

•Increased mechanical advantage.

DISADVANTAGE
Science&&Technology

•Whole braking system fails due to leakage

of brake fluid from brake lining.
•Presence of air inside the tubing's ruins the
InstituteofofScience

whole system.
